      -Assuming I have to run with this (and my 11 transport purchase should telegraph intent) I intend to pick up 11 infantry from Germany and Norway, the one artillery piece from Germany, and 6 tanks / 4 mech infantry from Holland for my invasion.

      I forgot to non combat move infantry from Finland to Norway to support this; let me edit and fix that.

      tacticals cannot bomb factories they can bomb air and naval bases though.

      I should have goten an intercept for your bombers but since you also did not go for the tacticals lets just ignore that detail :D

      I didn’t ask if you wanted to scramble there because I’d read in the forums here never to scramble against SBRs because its rolling ones all around and can cost fighters for no tactical gain, so I assumed you wouldn’t want to.  Would you like to revert and scramble?  It’s my bad assumption.  I figured you were going to want those two fighters guaranteed intact for the coming Sea Lion.

    • Tactical Bomber (rule?) question

      Hey folks!

      I’m trying to figure out if these are rule misunderstandings or a TripleA problem.

      1.  Triple A won’t let me use my German tactical bombers to bomb a factory in the UK.  It will let me fly to the UK from Western Germany, but the only options I have for bombing are airfield and harbor.  Is this a tactical bomber rule I didn’t know about?

      2.  It also won’t let me fly a tactical bomber from a carrier in SZ112 into the UK; which is a round trip movement of 4.  SZ112->SZ110->UK>SZ110->SZ112.

      Any input?

      With a G1 Carrier buy, and a strategic retreat from SZ111, that leaves the Germans with a navy consisting of a Battleship, a Cruiser, a transport, a loaded aircraft carrier, and possibly 1-2 subs depending on how combat resolved.

      I don’t want to waste a battleship and see it die if I don’t have to.  I also want to be able to project force, which that medium sized navy can do somewhat.

      Buying a CV G1 weakens Barbarossa by 4 artillery that could reach Moscow G6. No experienced players do this buy. That should tell you about the strength of it.

      Experienced players buy two bombers and a sub on turn 1 right?  What is barbarossa and how does a carrier on turn 1 weaken it by 4 artillery?

      Just try it out yourself. This is something you’ll have to learn yourself.

      For me, I love executing Sea Lion, but my criteria are different than other persons. I never plan for it on G1 and or even purchase units for it. Several things need to occur on turn 1 and then maybe I’ll consider it.

      Several things did happen on G1 of the game I’m in.  I won SZ106, and while Germany always wins SZ110 and SZ111 in my experience, I took less casualties than usual; even had a sub left over when I retreated to 112; killed everything except a plane in two turns.  Usually I consolidate whatever air force I have left and start pushing east, but what is the point of a G1 carrier buy every game to threaten Sea Lion unless you actually use it when opportunity arises?

      Hey folks!

      The search function isn’t so useful, and I scrolled through 7 pages looking for any recent discussion on sea lion before making this, so if there is already a discussion like this, I apologize.

      I’d like to know your opinion on Sea Lion.  My G1 leads off with a Carrier purchase and nothing else (based on a guide I’m following by SubmersedElk), which leaves a threat of Sea Lion.

      1.  What is the normal Britain first turn purchase with those $28?  Does a threatened Sea Lion make them buy 9 infantry instead?  How big of a difference does that make?
      2.  Assuming a G2 purchase of 10-11 transports, Britain would have two turns to purchase reinforcements…presumably 9 infantry both turns?  Can 11 infantry, whatever tanks, mechs, and artillery can be pulled out of France, and the Luftwaffe remaining after the SZ110 and SZ111 attacks realistically punch through 22 defending infantry?
      3.  What turn can Russia declare war on Germany?  I can never remember if its 3 or 4.

      Mostly I’d like your opinions on whether Sea Lion is a mistake.  I don’t know what sort of percentage chances of success would happen because I’ve never tried it, but if the London takeover isn’t a sure thing, then I wouldn’t want to risk it and have nothing to fight Russia with…but if it is a sure thing if the G1 sea zone battles went well, just a tactical consideration to ponder against the eastern front, I’d like thoughts on that too.

      I’ve mostly been playing against the AI until this Play by Forum that I’m trying with ShadowHAwk, but in all my games, Germany doing a full Russian offensive with Italy as a can-opener for German aircraft to move up a zone can’t get to Russia and take it before the US gets into Europe.

      Thanks!  I don’t think I’ve ever managed to keep the sub in SZ106 alive before, so I’ll be interested to see if it plays any part in the game to come.  Also, this is a learning experience for me, so I’m curious to know your thoughts about my G1 carrier purchase, your subsequent scramble, which left Britain mostly defenseless, and whether a G3 Sea Lion can work with a G2 purchase of transports.

      Britain starts with $28, so could buy a maximum of 9 infantry; stacking 4 infantry, 1 mech, and additional 9 infantry in Britain. Germany has $82, and could buy 11 transports to send in 11 infantry and a mix of tanks and mech infantry from France with its air force against the defending 13 infantry and tank.

      Doing so would prevent a Russian offensive since everything went west instead of east…so Russia would have a couple of turns to get stronger.  I’ve never tried a Sea Lion, and the forum threads I’ve read around here say that its always a mistake…presumably because its too easy for the US to retake it when they enter the war?  Or because it gives Russia the opportunity to become too strong for Germany to neuter before the US can mount a serious European invasion?

      I1:  Buy 1 mech and 1 tank.   VERY IMPORTANT FOR CAN OPENING

      I do this.  On I2, two tanks in range attack eastern poland, and on I3, they are joined by the extra tank and mech.  My I2 purchase is 2-3 more tanks, but it takes a turn or two to link up with the can opener.

      G2: Buy minimum 10 fast movers on Western Germany
      I2: Declare war, move into Eastern Poland

      This is my second turn too - Germany buys 13 tanks.  My first turn is a carrier, which is optimally used to protect a retreating battleship (and maybe a sub too) from SZ111, which gives me threat projection later in the game in the north Atlantic.  It also lets me do a naval landing and bombardment on Nov

      G3: Declare war, have main stack join forces in Eastern Poland; buy additional fast movers in W. Germany
      I3: Move into Belarus.  I have mastered the Northern route.  Much easier to learn and thrive this option.

      I’ve been going south because there were two factories down there, along with the Caucasus.  I haven’t tried going North - isn’t that going to lead me to getting bottlenecked in the same place though?  Bryansk?  My G3 turn is the same, another ~8 tanks I think.

      @Arthur:

      Tip 1) purchase 2 inf + 1 art per turn in France whenever possible.  Combined with planes you will have a potent force to counter Allied invasion in Normandy.  Maybe replace an inf with a mech if you want flexibility to support Italy

      Tip 2).  Purchase 2 inf or 1 inf + 1 art each turn and move with transport to Finland.

      I had not tried these.  I was literally just buying however many tanks I could afford every turn and sending them east - and not doing anything in the west until the allies had landed in Normandy, so I never have a one turn answer to them because I have to build for a turn.  I hadn’t even thought about the transport moving units into Finland - I’d been buying tanks so that they could get to the Moscow threat sooner, but the transit here does the same thing.  The transport lets me get a free naval invasion of Novgorod too, hopefully with naval bombardment.

      @Arthur:

      Tip 3).  Have big air force that has the flexibility to attack into:
      a) sea zones
      b) W. Europe
      c) Scandanavia
      d) Russia
      e) oil fields

      My German air force usually gets depleted a bit in G1 from the SZ110 and SZ111 attacks.  I don’t rebuild it because I’ve been going full tanks to push the eastern front.  The SZ110 scramble usually costs me a a couple tactical bombers and a fighter.  How do you balance restoring an air force or doing “dark skies” or having the ability to threaten these places at all with building tanks to send east?  The threat of a Russian counterattack against a too small German army is real.

      @Arthur:

      Tip 4) try to keep Italy from being convoyed raided to death;  if the Allies commit almost everything in the Med, that is great because it is difficult to send additional forces from the United States.

      How do you stop Italy from getting convoy raided to death?  I see a lot of staging in Gibraltar.  And can you define the convoy raiding?  Do you mean staging in Gibraltar and then going into southern france or Northern Italy?  I mostly see staging in Gibraltar to invade Normandy/Western Germany, or movement through Africa.

      15-20 bombers create a devastating strike force when combined with some fodder forces.  From an airbase in W. Germany or Italy, they can go almost anywhere.

      Same question here - how does one afford that?  Do you not build tanks, and build air force instead?

    • I need Axis help against Russia

      Hey folks!

      I feel like a lot of Axis guides and strategies rely on rushing into Russia and felling Moscow - but I haven’t been able to make it work.  This is the general German progress:

      G1:  Germany takes France and Yugoslavia, walks into Bulgaria and Finland.

      G2: German armor moves east.
      I2:  Italy declares war on Russia and takes Eastern Poland.

      G3: Germany stacks up in Eastern Poland, starts bombing Russia.
      I3: Italy takes Western Ukraine.

      G4: Germany stacks up in Western Ukraine, bombs Russia. At this point, Russia is usually stacked up in Bryansk.
      I4:  Italy takes Ukraine.

      G5: Germany stacks up in Ukraine (to go around the Bryansk stack via Rostov / Volgograd)

      By this time, there’s ~15-20 infantry and 30-35 tanks with the german stack, along with the planes.  It’s not enough to break through the Russian defense in Bryansk, even though there are 8-10 tanks moving east every turn to join the stack; when Baltic and Novgorod clear out, I send whatever minimal force north I can to take them away - but about this time western europe gets invaded by the allies, and I have to pause in my tank building to get a turn or two of infantry defending germany and france.

      Eventually, Japan starts creeping into Russia from the far east, but there is no break through for a clean kill on Russia.

      Advice?
