    • RE: When and where are tourneys

There is a spring tourney PBEM sign up listed in the games section. I was hoping we’d get 8 players, but right now we’re stuck at 2, and have been for a while. :(

We need some more players!!! :D

    • RE: The Med on G1

I’ve been wanting to try something but have never had the guts to do it in a game because it goes against basic German strat of never losing planes, and I think it might be a lost cause. But I’ll pitch it to you guys anyway, so you can point out the flaws or what UK would do. It is basically a sacrifice Germany airforce rd 1 here goes: (Assuming RR, 1 hit BB, and Rus reinforce UK sz with sub and tranny)

Hit UK med BB with 2 ftrs
Hit UK sz with 2 ftrs, 1 bom, 1 sub (baltic sz)
Hit E can sz with ftr

Yes you lose tons of ftrs, but here is the catch you move the entire German fleet to W Spain sz, plus tank from Fin to Afr, and 2 inf SE to Afr. So, you have 1 BB, 1 sub, and 2 trns in the W Spain sz and the ability to threaten Afr, UK, Can, US and Brazil.

Now, would UK send ftrs and bom to hit the Ger fleet? And what would UK buy wih its 30?

I think I would hit the fleet as UK with my planes but I’m not sure.
What are your guys thoughts on this strat and how would you play it as UK.

    • RE: Where and how do you guys play online?

In the “player help” section there are a couple of threads that might help:
“playing by email” and “help, I want to play by email” I think that’s what their names are.

There is a dice rolling program, dicey, that emails results to the players. It is very easy to use and I think those other threads have the web address. If you want to test it out 1) don’t put in email addresses or 2) just put in yours and you can see how you get the results.

Also in the “games” section there are several PBEM games that have been played so you can see how various players record their turns.

    • RE: Best russian opening with rr

It’s not that this strat doesn’t work, it’s just that it is not the optimum strat. It unnecessarily could open the door for the axis, and the allies don’t need to take any chances or tricks to win. Now, I can see if you want to change things up and want to try something new then by all means go ahead.

Also, besides strafing (already mentioned), your giving up ground as Russia when you don’t have to. Lets say Germany bites and takes Kar (don’t put one ftr in Kar-you’ll lose it!) and you counter and wipe him out. He’ll intern take you out and so on…You’ve just made Kar a “trading territory” when you should be trading Ukr instead. You’re giving Ger 3 extra IPC. Yes you wipe the German tanks, but your offensive units will be gone as well BUT Ger will be able to out produce you and get more inf quicker, esp if you can’t hold and place in Kar.
Whereas if you just stack Kar on rd 1, then even if ger takes Cauc, you can retake cauc, take Fin, and still take Ukr. Or possibly take EE. You can send 18 inf 3 arm and 2 ftrs into EE. Take a shot at his 7-8 tanks sitting in EE, he’ll only have 7-9 inf there protecting, and if he took cauc, that is 2 less inf in EE, and if he sent 2 to Afr there is another 2 inf gone.
It is just there are better options in rd2 if you stack and wait.

For Yakut, I think you can stack 7 inf 1 tank in Rd1, no need for a ftr or aa gun. Move 1 inf from Mos to Novo each rd to reinforce Yak and pull your tank back. Japan won’t be able to hit Yak till at least rd 3, so judge when he is going to strike, leave 1 inf, and pull everything else back before he does. Then counter if he moves in tanks and leaves them relatively undefended. Strategic retreat is key for the Russians in the
East. Again, don’t give up ground when you don’t have to, don’t pull your troops out of the East too early. If you hold Japan out East for an extra rd or 2 early on, that buys you much needed time later in the game.

We didn’t get anything out here in Chicago either. :-?

They were predicting all this snow for Fri and Sat and we didn’t get squat. Maybe like 3-4 inches at best, but most of it has melted by now. I do think farther south they got more but overall not much to speak of.

Yeah, with the snow, you probably won’t be going anywhere till June.

I suppose…now with CC gone, you could run this site with an iron fist.

There will be no one to stop you this time…

    • RE: Updated version of A&A?

There was a release of an A&A computer game a few years back, but it is a bit “buggy” and the AI isn’t good at all, and a follow up called Iron Blitz, but I think that is buggy too, but I don’t own that one.
There have been no updates in units for the original A&A, However, I believe Europe and Pacific may have a few different units, like Destroyers or Artillery or something.

    • RE: Karelia has fallen!

For your defense you can go with:

      1. 18 inf and 2 ftrs, with 1 inf in Cauc and 1 in Moscow. Also move 3 tanks to Moscow and 1 to Novo. You will be able to retake Kar on Rd 2.
      2. 18 inf, 3 arm, 2 ftrs in Kar, with 1 inf on Cauc and Mos and a tank on Novo. This should be able to hold Kar, and an attack on these kind of numbers is suicide. UK should be able to retake it for you. It should have a tran left (because ftrs will be needed to assualt Kar - 11 inf and 7 tanks won’t get it done alone), and UK can send 2 inf, 2 ftrs and a bom to recapture Kar, lose a ftr if you have to, because if UK takes it back Russia can place in Kar on Rd2 and the game is over.

    • RE: Farewell

Strong, I would suggest that you stop calling Yanny a commie.
Perhaps he feels that your just posting to attack him. I don’t know what’s been deleted and what hasn’t but I’m sure we don’t need to resort to name calling. I don’t think anyone on this site is out to get you, or anyone that doesn’t agree with Yanny. There are plenty of us out there who don’t agree with Yanny on politics and stuff. But it also has to be a tough job to go through posts and keep this site somewhat professional looking, and it jumps out at you when new people start posting 20-30 times a day.
I would suggest just logging back in under your registered name and forgetting about it.

    • RE: Mathematics of A&A

Maybe guest ment a ftr’s movement won’t effect the attack, but it could effect the casualty choices since planes can’t land in or capture a new territory, their retreatability or the prospect of being able to use them rd after rd after rd, where a tank may get taken out on the counter strike, but this has more to do with AI stuff then straight up odds calculating.

Anyway this brings me to my question, are you looking to just create an odds calculator or do you have a greater purpose in mind, meaning trying to create something that could then be used to make an AI?
Or do you want something to be able to just figure out the least amount of each unit I need to bring into a certain battle?

I’m just a little confused on what your looking for, cause it seems like you have the odd’s calculator stuff down pretty good.

    • RE: Curious….

I don’t know if there is ever a point where I think I won/lost till a capital has fallen, but I do have some goals I shoot for where I know I’m at an advantage or disadvantage:

      • If the Axis combined IPC is over 70 for rd 3 and 4, the axis are in great shape. Otherwise, the weight of the combined allied economies will eventually crush you.
      • If the allies can take and HOLD WE, and Russia still has Kar, Cauc, Eve, Novo, and Kaz, then an allied win is almost guarenteed.
      • If the allies hold Africa and Russia isn’t threatened then that is bad news for the Axis.
      • Anytime you have an IC that gets captured and held, an original one or newly placed, it is probably only a matter of time.

These are only a few things that may indicate who may win, but ultimately I feel it comes down to the economies. The quicker and longer the Axis can be over 70 IPC the better for them and there chances. And by 70, I mean Ger at about 28-30 and Jap at 40-45 or so. It does you no good if Jap is at 50+ and Ger is under 20, then the game is over.

I hope some of this help and I didn’t just ramble on.

    • RE: Colin powel's speach

I like everyone in the administration, I think Bush did a superb job on picking his advisors and staff. I mean you have Rummy and Cheney the hardliners, Powell and Condy Rice the diplomats (with the “more reasonable” approaches) and more often then not Bush falls in between them. It’s perfect. And it is no accident that Powell was seen as more reasonable and leaning more towards the UN approach, then he delivers the last chance speech yesterday and it blows people away. “Hey, if Colin Powell says this stuff and is convinced Iraq won’t disarm, then it must be true…” Brilliant! This is a clear example of why you can’t surround yourself with yes-men. That speech never would have had the same impact if Cheney or Bush gave it, but since it was Powell, it just made it much more effective.

Powell does have a much broader appeal, beyond party lines, going for him and I think Condaleeza Rice is going to be a force in future politcs too if she so chooses. Maybe possible VP candidate in 2008.
