    • RE: Is it possible for Russia to build a navy and still win?

I believe there is a thread around here somewhere that explains the benefit of teching as Japan.
Infact, I think SUD (Soon U Die) makes a very similar post to Guest’s.

Speaking from experience, it is very hard to counter Japan with HB and IT when they have 4+ boms.
Kobu has used this strat well against me and with 4 HB you’re able to wipe out 2 Allied banks, and with 6 HB you can hit all three allies. No matter how far the Allies have spread or how much damage they have done, if you have NO CASH you can’t win. Eventually the world will turn yellow.

    • RE: Can someone clarify…...

      1. You CANNOT move from top to bottom.

      2. NO, once a tank is dropped off it can’t move any further.

      3. NO, once a transport unloads its’ cargo it can no longer move.
You can load 2 units, move, then unload or
Move 1 or 2 squares, load, move remaining square(s) (if applicable) then unload but
      You CAN’T unload then move.

      4. YES, they can be atacked by aircraft. They can however submerge or retreat (depending on which version of the rules you use) so if the plane misses you can flee.
Subs should probably be accompanied by other ships to protect against this, either lots of trans or a AC or Battleship.
You also probably won’t see many sub purchases esp in the Atlantic. The Allies usually own the Atlantic by rd 2 or 3 and it does no good to buy German subs.
You might need them in the Pacific though, for the US or Japan, and they are probably out of reach of most planes.

      5. They need help, usually bid or rule changes for experienced players.
However, with beginners the game is pretty even, it only becomes unbalanced when the Allies fully understand that they have to work together and coordinate attacks. Basically the constant 3 on 1 eliminate Germany first strat causes the biggest trouble for the Axis and at that point Germany needs help such as a bid (Germany gets a few extra units to start with or extra starting cash)

    • RE: 2 rules questions

That is legal, you can lose the AC in rd 1 and the ftr in rd 2 or rd 3 or whenever, but you will of course lose the ftr eventually.
It is not illegal because the ftr did have a potential landing spot at the beginning to the battle like bossk suggested.
An example would be Pearl in rd 1, and bring the ftr from the Phil Is. You could (theoretically) lose the AC first, the risk is if you lose the AC and your ftr wins during the 2nd rd you lose the ftr too.

I could only see this maybe happening with an AC and ftr vs. a Battleship and even then you’re throwing away 30 IPC for 24 IPC. (assuming you miss in rd 1 - otherwise you could just lose the cheaper ftr)

    • RE: Weapons of Mass Destruction and Iraq

      Ugh.

I tried so hard to stay out of this debate, but I have to strenuously object (A Few Good Men Reference) to those comments Yanny.

There’s a difference between choosing to drink, smoke, or do drugs and getting blown up by some nut while you’re sitting at a club, cafe or bus station.

And Israel can’t ignore Hamas etc, because they will stop at only one thing…the destruction of Israel!
And if the fair minded Palestinians aren’t going to do anything about Israel has every right to defend themselves.
Israel or the US DON’T incite or cause more terrorism by their actions. That is a false argument. I think the majority of Palestinians and people from other Middle Eastern countries are fair and good people and would be happy with a 2 state solution, Israel and Palestine, and would like a good relationship with the West.
The problem is the fanatics don’t want that and incite terrorism to deflect the blame. It is much easier to blame the US or Israel then to blame your own country and leaders. We (the US) could do everything they ask for and we would still be a target, and Isreal has gone out of its way to try and do something about it, both in the Clinton years and recently and what do they get for it…more bombs!
The reason they are stepping up the bombing and trying to derail peace talks is because they (Hamas etc.) know that their days are numbered.
There is a good reason why many Palestinians want to go to Israel to work, because they just want to earn a good living for their family and it is clear, in Israel, that they can get along and their is no reason a Palestinian state could be like that but they have to be willing and put the effort into getting rid of the terrorist who only want to destroy Israel.

Sorry if I took us off topic (did I???), but it is late and I’m tired.

Oh, I’ll end on this quote I heard, I forget who said it but I like it.

“We haven’t found Saddam yet, does that mean he didn’t exist?”

    • RE: My turn 1 strats seem different than all the others….

With Russia going all out like that, they are speading themselves too thin. I’m assuming they take Fin, EE, Ukr with maybe 2 units max left over in each, probably 1 if they even take them. I’ll even assume Russia took out the German ships in the Baltic.

      G1 buy 9 inf, 1 arm or 10 inf save 2
Take back EE with (inf and arm from Ger and WE) and Ukr (with 2 inf from SE, BB and tran in med) or drop the 2 inf in an empty cauc.
Sink the Brit trans with 3 remain planes (bom to Lab sz, 2 ftrs to uk sz). Don’t worry about the BB.
Take what you can in Afr by blitzing.
Leave only 1 inf in WE and land planes in Ger. Dare the US to take WE.

Ger now has 10-11 inf, 1-3 arm, 1 ftr, 1 bom for turn 2 plus 3 inf (minimum in EE) and 2 inf in Ukr or Cauc and collects around 32.

UK can’t get troops to Europe or Kar and US is no threat till rd3.
Russia is thin and has no help coming.

Japan buys 2 trns, 3 inf
takes back Man and takes out China and Pearl.

At this point it doesn’t matter if Ger and Jap forces are thin because Russia has no reinforcements and has to worry about the Germans who could have 10+ inf in EE on rd 2 plus you might still own Ukr or Cauc.
You can even let the allies have WE on rd 2 as you dance around Africa in make up for it. They won’t be able to seriously threaten Berlin till rd4 or later and you’ll be placing 10 inf there a turn and then pushing those troops to the Russian front as needed.

    • RE: Does it feel good to win individually in this game?

      Cool, glad you liked it.

One thing though, The UK player may be at a serious disadvantage because he has a very large empire and very few units to begin with, and may lose much of her income in Afr and Canada if it is every man for himself.

It probably would be a good idea to test it out a few times, but I could see the UK needed another guy in India and/or South Africa maybe. Or perhaps give the UK one man in Libya and move the German units to Algeria. Or UK gets a free IC and AA gun in South Africa (but can only place 2 units there per - use the placement of a new IC rule)

Just some suggestions to try and even the playing field.

    • RE: Does it feel good to win individually in this game?

      Here’s a couple of suggestions:

      1. Play the game as is, except it is every man for himself, although this probably isn’t balanced.
      2. Everyone starts out with the same income and numbers of units and then can place them anywhere in their countries borders, although you’ll probably have to mess with territory values to even things out.
        or
      3. Use a risk type set up, (everyone gets same cash, units), but players then pick their Capital (anywhere) and other territories (like risk). But you play with A&A rules –- we have a game like this going in the game section called A&A Risk. We made capitals worth 10 IPC, everything else worth 2 IPC to make it easy.

These are just a few ideas. Check out the varients and house rules section for more.

    • RE: Get rid of Columbus day!

      @Deviant:Scripter:

Yanny, why are you so “obsessed” with this book? How do you know for sure that what this guy is saying is the truth, and not just a bitter slap in the face to the publisher’s who rejected his American History book?

You citing this stuff as fact, would be like me using Rush Limbaugh as a reference. Sure, it may be true, but are we getting the whole story…? :-?

Well, Rush IS documented to be right 98.6% of the time. :D

    • RE: Aa risk

Just thinking - I think I’d like to do away with the 2 inf per territory thing. I think this may eliminate a lot of the strategy in the game. Whereas, if you only have a capital and new complexes you have to plan out more of your attacks and reinforcements, etc.
Just my opinion. But I will play which ever way is decided upon.

    • RE: Aa risk

I’d be more then happy to play with the more A&A type rules. My initial concern was based on building a new factory where you could only place 2 units. It just didn’t seem like enough units to place for a 15 IPC investment. That’s why I liked the 2 inf-2 other for new complexes. But I’d feel fine if we did away with the 2 inf per territory and stuff. We can even do away with the 2-2 for new complexes. I can live with just being able to place 2 units total, to make it easier.
I agree with Laststrike, if you would like to nix a rule go ahead, you did start this game and should not feel obligated to play in a way you didn’t envision.

      No, it’s fine with me.
But you can’t place in newly acquired territories, right?

Or at least that would be my suggestion. You can only place in territories that you held at the beginning of you turn.

    • RE: Aa risk

Yeah, you guys are right about the inf thing. Even in regular A&A you rarely buy more than 10 inf, unless you’re Ger.

Although, that lase comment by dezrtfish about placing inf in other territories just confused me. I thought you had to place new units by a complex?
Sorry, it’s getting close to lunch time here, plus it’s a Monday.
Another reason I didn’t want to go first.

Oh, laststrike I’ll send you a PM with my email for rolls.

    • RE: Aa risk

I like the 18 IPC thing after the initial placement phase.
I also like the new restrictions on the new complexes (2 inf - 2 other), but I don’t like restricting the original complex. Afr, Europe, and Asia cover a lot of ground and big Inf purchases may be needed. Just my opinion.

    • RE: Aa risk

I was just thinking that maybe we go with:
      Player 1 - Inxduk
      Player 2 - Laststrike
      Player 3 - Dezrtfish
      Player 4 - DarthMaximus
(the order in which people signed up to play)

I don’t know if it is fair for me to join last and then have first pick of a capital location, or other territories.

      Just a thought.

      One more thing:
You can buy new IC’s and aa-guns, right?
And then could you only place 2 units at a new complex?
      Like regular A&A new complexes.
