No, it strikes very close to home.

Two of my best friends live (well lived in) NO. I’ve known one for over 11 years and another for over 9 years. I met them both in college and we’ve been friends ever since.

Right now they are in Reno and assumed they lost everything.

So don’t try and pull this, “you don’t care stuff”.

Maybe I was a bit harsh.

But this is why some of us are small gov’t people. The Federal Gov’t shouldn’t be the answer to everything.

This is why I’m so hard on the Local gov’t.

If a Tornado hits here in IL, I’m concerned about what my local officials will be doing. You can’t expect Federal help right away.

I really don’t know how you can expect the Feds to react immediately. The Govenor is right there and was given authority a day prior to the storm hitting, and didn’t do squat.

Frankly, I don’t care if people blame Bush, he’s not running for anything. But I would be pissed at my Gov/Mayor if I lived in there and they had Buses to evacuate people and didn’t! Or didn’t provide food/water/bathrooms/etc at the safety points like the SuperDome.

NO was below sea level! That is no secret. And the levees couldn’t stand higher then a CAT 3, that was also no secret.

A NO paper even had stories earlier in the summer about how NO would be doomed if a powerful hurricane hit and how “people would be on their own”. I believe the Mayor even said that.

This won’t cost Bush or the Reps anything politically.
If anything it make the Dems look terrible.
Compare Jeb’s reation to 3 straight hurricanes in FL last year to the LA Gov. And Compare how Guilliani took charge in NY.

The sad thing is the Dems have no ability to lead and no leaders.

TIP: What the Gov should have done was hold press conferences and been ordering people around, instead they played this helpless blame game and opened the door for Bush to ride in, hog air time, say he’s now in charge, the Feds are here, blah blah blah. The Dems have lost there chance to have a “hero” step forward.

This will have liitle to no effect in 2006, what may have an effect is the hurricanes that take place NEXT year, and if the response is good it makes Bush look like a hero for pushing through “sweeping changes”, blah blah blah.

I’ve said this many times, people don’t vote against things, they vote for things. With no alternatives to anything they’ll keep losing.

    • RE: Govt. Response to Katrina

Yes, this shows that Bush was on top of it and the Gov of LA failed to act.

Bush Declared a State of Emergency on Late Sat or Early Sun, I believe, and urged a Manditory Evacuation.

This gives the Govenor the power to ENFORCE this. However, she did not issue the Manditory evacuation order until 12 hrs later.

And then did nothing to enforce it.

I believe Jen is correct, when she says the Govenor didn’t “officially” approve the disaster area until a day or 2 after the storm.

      Here’s how it works.

      (A storm hits!)

Feds issue - Federal Disaster Area.
      NOW
The Gov of said state has the power to do all sorts of things but must first of course approve the order of the Feds (that it is a disaster area)
      NOW
The STATE (Read GOV) has the power to issue evacuation warnings, forcibly remove people if necessary, mobilize the National Guard Etc.

Just because a Pres says “Fed disaster area” doesn’t mean the Army comes running in. It grants the Governor more power who in turn MUST ASK THE FEDS to get involved.

That’s what it does. All Bush did was say if you need the FED we are here, but the Gov failed to use her power to get the ball rolling or in turn ask for the Fed to step in. She didn’t until a day after the storm, it might have even been Wed. by that time

You should be asking how did the local gov fail?

Why did they not use all those school buses (that were flooded, I’m sure you’ve seen the pic), to evacuate people?

That is officially stated in the LA guide for Hurricanes and what should be done.

Why did the MAyor and Gov not enforce the Mandatory Evacuation that was give 24 hrs befor the storm hit?

Why did they not supply the SuperDome with food, water, extra toilets? They had several days warning of a Cat 5 warning. I remember hear Cat five as early as Sat. That gives at least 2 days.

Why no security at the Superdome? Again this wasn’t a surprise storm.

Why not mobilize the NG prior to the storm?

I find it equally as sickening that some of you hate Bush so much that it turns you into utter morons.

You actually argueing that Bush could have rode in and in one foul swoop wisked everyone away prior to the storm???

As I’ve said what the heck were the local officials doing???
That is why we have Govenors and state governements!!!

If you want the Feds to do everything there is no point to State Gov’t.

Please take a step back and actually think.

By the way check the Murder Rate of NO prior to Katrina. It isn’t a very safe place to live regardless.

Why was the city in such bad shape? Because they have their own Democratic machine that cares nothing for the people.

    • RE: Who do you prefer to take Finland/Norway with?

That doesn’t really help the Germans though, they just sacrificed 3 inf (2 cauc, 1 ukr for nothing as well)

Say, G takes Cauc with 2 inf (rus left 1), G leaves 1 inf in Ukr.

Rus can hit Fin, Ukr and Cauc all on rd 2.

      Fin - 3 inf, 1 arm vs. 3 inf, 3 arm
      Cauc - 2 inf vs. 3 inf, 1 arm
      Ukr - 1 inf vs. 2 inf, 2 ftrs

That leaves 11 inf in Kar, so you place 8 inf there again gives you 19 plus 4 ftrs (2 R, 2 UK), and after US 2, you’ll have 5-6 ftrs there.

No way in heck will G attack Kar on G2. Even if they take it, you can counter with 7-8 inf, 4 arm with Russia.

    • RE: Who do you prefer to take Finland/Norway with?

Now, if Germany lands lots of ftrs in fin on Rd 1 (to hold Fin for rd 2), you must attack to take those ftrs out, IMO.

Now based on your other posts about your games, I’m assuming Ger is attacking Kar on rd 1.

But assuming you hold Kar, and have a few inf in Kar left over with 3 arm and 2 ftrs, you can attack Fin with everything you got in Kar (to kill the ftrs), then place only 1 inf in Kar, and the rest in Moscow. Now you’ve set a little trap for the Germans. If they attack Kar you can hit them with your combined forces from Mos and Fin and easily reclaim it. However, if things go bad, you can “leap frog retreat” and retreat everything back to Moscow after you do a round or two of strafing to weaken the Germans.

Again though, I think you’ll stop seeing Germany load up in Fin if you stack 19 inf, 3 arm, 2 ftrs in Kar at the end of Russia 1. Again, there is no way Germany can hit this on G1 without bringing in all their airforce (or a bid), getting extremely lucky and even then they only hold with an arm while losing all their air. Which means UK can counter with 2 inf, 1 arm, planes and BB shot, then Russia can still place 8 inf on Kar in rd 2.

I posted J1. It went well to say the least.

My intention was to attack Yak from the onset. But I could aford a ftr to spare in LL as 19 vs. 16 in attacking power is still 3 hits. So the last ftr went to China instead.

I took Yak, Sfe, Chi, and Ind.
I went Pearl Heavy and escaped with only one hit. So I have 2 BB’s, 1 AC and 2 ftrs there.

My initial goal wasn’t to necessarily take Moscow, but to absolutely devestate the Russians and then as Germany to just survive long enough for Japan to pressure Moscow and take the Russians if possible.

No prob. Maybe we can shoot for summer sometime.

Its not club ettiquette its general ettiquette. If you agree to play someone you should not be playing them to set them up for something in some future game.

Just for clarification, I don’t me you specifically, I’m not trying to “set” you up for anything. I doubt I could anyway as you’ve probably seen everything. But because most of my games are posted here for anyone to see, I figure if I always use the exact same strat that would put me at a disadvantage. My opponent could simply see that I always do something and be prepared.

For instance I played 4 games with Kobu, while he won the first 2, I won the next 2, but all 4 games I played very very differently. One game was pretty standard, one game was tech heavy on both sides, one time I used a KJF and another was a tech game but not all out tech. The point was Kobu used the same strat all 4 games, but after the first 2 games it ceased working. I just don’t want to fall into the category of being a predictible player.

    • RE: Scenerio: Would you take Kar in Rd 1?

But using a white elephant to throw someone offguard is kind of janky as well, and especially in an unranked game.

But I only play unranked games and only play at this site. So if there is some Club etiquette where this (using different strats to set up other games) is looked down upon I’m just not familar with that.

I would play ranked games if challeged (or someone really insisted) at FoE or whatever, but I’m not sure if I’d ever be an active club player.

Now if I had made the defense not as strong you’d have a better case, but as I see it no player in ADS or LL would ever attack 16 units in Karelia b/c I’ve never seen it before.

Really??? I’m being serious here. Now, I’m really intrigued.
      Nobody???

Cool, can we call this the DarthMaximus move? :D
Pass the word around the Clubs!

Anyway, I ment no harm by my move or had no malicious intent. Remember we also had mulligans. I figured if Kar went bad I could re do it. So, I had 2 chances to come out better than avg. No that that helps much.

I just wish you asked me to tkae it back before calling it desperate and a cheap shot or gamble.

If you remember, you asked me to take back a move in our first game. My defense of Yak with Rus. You suggested bring over another ftr.
While I objected at first you explained how you’d take 7 inf for 4, I may have wanted the trade at first (a may still put up a bit of a stink :D ), but ultimately I agreed and we played on.

All you had to do was ask me to take it back and say how you really wanted to show how a PA game is played. I would’ve went 5-2 bid and all would’ve been dandy. But your initial comments got me in defensive mode and I will defend my moves, even if they are bad ones.

I even went back and redid G1 on Fri, maybe I should’ve done that sooner but I was a bit ticked earlier.

Whether you want to continue or not is up to you. I found it a bit silly that I was getting mad over an A&A game that is played on a MB. :D

So I’m ready to move. I’ll gladly discuss the move and it’s merits (and pros/cons) but there was no evil or vindictive intent behind it. It was just a move.

    • RE: Scenerio: Would you take Kar in Rd 1?

Then why did you deviate from that so greatly? Why is it that you only deviate from this against me?

Huh? We played 1 game, and we were the opposite sides.

There is no record of us playing. You can take the games between me CC or others al you want, but

      1. they were RR
      2. they were ADS
      3. I really am deathly afraid of AA-fire in ADS.
      4. there were more inf there, and in ADS that is a wonderful deterrant

I rarely if ever use SBR, but in LL I found there is no threat to the bomber so you can use them all you want.
But you would argue that I only do this against you and it some how deceitful.

If some other player left the the same defense as you did in Kar, I’d do the samething, however I won’t be bullied into making a move.

The key to be a good A&A player is not to be predictible. Now whenever someone plays me they have to worry about a Kar strike, or maybe they leave it as bait. Regardless, maybe this in turn forces them to leave an extra inf behind or do something slightly different giving an adv to me.

See if we were to ever play again (which seems doubtful), you wouldn’t know if I would attack Kar or not. Maybe you set it up the same way but, this time I have my sub. Well now I don’t have to do Kar. Or maybe you try and bait me more, but instead I go for Syr, or maybe my sub retreats and I hit the US tran, or maybe I just kill the Med fleet.

My point is I don’t ever want my opponent to know how I play. If that means I lose a game then so be it.

Don’t forget I foolishly lost 2 or so US trns in our first game, and against Mr. G I went to Fic and gave him a shot at my Japanese trns. I play reckless at times, you would call it desperate, but I call it aggressive.

And if you’d surrender as the Axis by rd 6 if they haven’t taken Moscow, that justifyies my move even more as well as a PE bid.

I’ve also never said PE is unsportsman like. I said I don’t like it, because I like longer games.

That is my whole point about a 24 bid. If you give someone 24, it’s better to just play PE and get the game over with one way or another.

But with a 21-22 bid, then you can open up the Afr bid or split bids.

Seriously if you’re Axis and getting 24-25, it only makes sense to go for the quick win. Why waste time in Afr? Throw down on Ukr, and go for the win. That is not fun, IMO.

My bid was different, I gave myself many option, stay in Afr, go to Europe, I even gave Japan several options. I didn’t want you to know what I was going to do. That’s how you keep your opponent on his heals.

      (to SHP)

      Lol! (at that last part)

You are by far the most difficult person I’ve come across on a MB. I mean that in a good way.

Have ever seen that Monty Python where they go to the argument clinic? Classic stuff. :D That what this feels like.

      So, fine.
      I wanted to beat you.
      It was a desperate move.
      It was lucky.
I’d never do it again (even though I did re-rolled it twice and had the emails sent, I didn’t want to over load your email.) I thought that would at least show that it was that out of the ordinary.
And you got jobbed in Ukr and Egy too.

Either you play to win or you don’t play,

But I just did, and you critcized my move.

I said I’d play a “no luck” rd 1, I’m just not too familiar with it, If you want me to play a 5 - 2 bid with 1 IPC to Ger, fine. If Kar is off limits for rd 1 and 2 fine.

Remember we had a “no strafing” rule in our first game for the first 3 rds. That was made clear, but I didn’t know Kar was off limits this game.

I’ll play any scenerio with anyone, just as long as it is made clear prior to R1.

As for time frame of my games, I’ll play as Axis as long as Germany holds it’s core IF Japan has control of Novo (and or Kaz and Eve), but If Japan is stuck at Yak or Sin and Germany just lost EE, then it is probably game over.

I’ve never made any secrets about how I like longer games, when both sides are battling over position.

I mean there are ways the Axis can win long games (obviously the Allies have the adv but still…), ie Japan helps out in Afr and gets it’s fleet to the Med, or Japan has her ftrs sitting on Ger, or you do a 1-2 late rd shot on the Atlantic fleet to maybe open the door, lots of stuff. I like games where both sides earn in the 70’s and you have to use tactics and strat to break the stalemate.

There is lots of variety and that is fun for me, which is why I vary my moves. I don’t want to get pigeon holed and have my opponents say “Oh DM, he ALWAYS attack Ukr with 7 inf, 3 arm or always fortifies Fic instead of Man” I like variety, for no other reason then to change what the game looks like, if I lose fine, but I’m always tinkering with stuff.

Anyway, sorry for any misunderstanding, and like I said I’m open for any game any scenerio against anybody as long as the guidlines and rules are set out and made clear.

DM - I have three games going right now - when I clear one, I’ll be happy to play a game. I do think you would find that MOST players in the clubs also enjoy the game far more than the points, but the points just give a way of tallying it all up. What can be even more fun is getting involved in various team games or tourneys.

I just re-rolled the battle TWICE.

Both times I took it with 1 arm, 2 ftr, 1 bom.

      Just as BW predicted.

So I only came out ONE unit ahead. If you can’t deal with a one unit difference then you aren’t very good player.

I beat you fair and square.

Your damn right I order the code red!!! Of course I wanted to beat you, and I did nothing deceitful.

Sheeesh it was 1 battle. Sorry.

What was really killer was I almost took it with all 4 ftrs and my bom. The last rd of combat had me getting my remaining hits, but you had only 8 pts left. You scored a 1 or a 2 on the last rd to force me to lose a plane, but I could only imagine your reaction if that happen. Oh man, I too would be pissed.

If you had bought 8 inf though you would have had 15 inf, 1 arm, 1 ftr. I wouldn’t have been able to take no matter how much air I killed, also if you landed the 2nd ftr there I couldn’t have taken it, or even come close.

I just have one question, why set the trap if your not prepared to use it?

I was totally expecting a full strafe on Ukr with retreat to Kar, so your combined moves of Ukr and somewhat lightly defended Kar, I thought I could really cripple you early, cause I know you like Russia. I wanted to take away your strength, (or at least what I perceive to be your strength - Russia).

Your objection to the early Kar strike is entered into the permanent record.

I really wasn’t aware that we were only going to test PA. Yes, so the 4-3 bid was a bit of a set up. By that I mean I wanted lots of options on G1 and J1.
I didn’t realize you wanted a completely transparent game. I don’t see how that could be fun for you? If you know everything I’m going to do, I don’t even need to play.

You can type out your own game playing yourself and show everyone how it’s done.

I’ve already said (somewhere) that if I played in clubs, I would bid and play differently.

And if you only play for points and rankings why even waste your time here or offer to play people?

Remember, you suggested we play not me.

I’d be happy to play BW or OpTorch or any othe club player, but I’m not going to go asking them. I’ve had a post sitting in the games section for a couple of months looking for a player. Anyone is free to play or challenge me.
I was under the impression Club players only play for their points/rankings and don’t play here too often if ever.

Usually people start out here then move on to a Club and cease playing their games here.

I don’t care ratings shmatings, you want to challenge me at FoE in a rated game, fine. I don’t care. If I lose big deal.

If he said “Hey I really wanted to try a PA game and show you how the Allies do such and such…”

I would’ve have said okay and probably redid G1 that night. But something about his comments rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I misunderstood him again. But in either case it wasn’t clear to me on the goal of our game.
He could’ve made it clear after my bid and said “I really want to play PA, would you mind placing 5 inf in Lib and 2 on Man.” I would’ve been fine with that as well. Like I said I just thought we were playing any old game.

And while I admit it wasn’t the best G1, which is why I put

      We used the DAAK roller.

But about a year ago when I first was introduced to LL, I found it interesting. So I made my own roller in EXCEL. I use it to see kind of best case vs. worst case scenerios depending on if I want the defender to hit on 2 or higher, 3 or higher, or 4 or higher.

It gives me cost analysis as well and it makes it easier for me to type out PBEM turns or play from work sometimes as I don’t feel bad about using Excel at work, but I certainly wouldn’t want to load A&A tools and stuff on my work computer.

Plus when I mess with the stuff in Excel I can kill time at work sometimes. :D
