      Cool !!
Can’t wait – We really like your program!

I did not quite understand what you meant re accounting for liberartion
(do you just increase next turns Start IPC entry ? or does that screw later formulas ?)
and do you just change France’s next turn Start IPC to 0 ?

It would be easy enough to just give Germany 19 paper IPCs as plunder and allow them to spend it as well as the amount calculated without accounting for liberation – but I like the accounting to be captured by the spread sheet to keep the war room chart accurate.

Also Occupied Countries keep showing a starting income each turn based on their remaining land – what is the best way to account for that  ( we have been earasing it by entering an equal amount of convoy loss each turn - is there a better way ??)

Do you also place a Factory in FIC ?

Then any ships you build have an instant base.

How do you account for when a capitol is taken ?

Like how do I reflect the 19 IPC that Germany takes from France on G1?

How do you reflect when France is Liberated and British held French land goes back to France etc. ??

Really like the Warroom feature wish that there were plots for each country !

    • RE: Unit's cost: what's the criteria?

      Ran into the question

Thought about reducing Bombers vs Naval Units
( I thought hitting on a one was good )
but should they still cost 12?

It did not seem right …but selling them for Tac Bomber or fighter cost seemed wierd
So rather then reducing price I thought about augmenting something else.

      Came up with:

      Cost: 14
      Attack: 4 / 1 vs Naval units
      Defense: 1
      Range: 6
Takes 1 hit to reduce attack by 2 / and cannot proceed with an SBR
      Takes 2 hits to destroy

    • RE: Keeping Anzac under control.

      First a rule question:

Can ANZAC unilaterally declare war on Japan, without involving Great Britain ?

( This would allow them to collect their national objectives, during the first turn, but still keep, England safe from Japanese aggression - given that the Japanese wanted to keep the United States out of the war)

Secondly more blatant Aussie cheerleading: ( from a Yank here but married to an Aussie)

I agree that ANZAC is a great addition to the game and performs well !
( My wife said she bought me the game when she noted that Ancef was an independent power)

While believing that the Aussies, by no stretch of the imagination, when the war of neuroma or were instrumental in it.
I do believe they were quite impressive.

If I’m not mistaken, the first time the axis was successfully, altered in the war came at Tobruk – which was largely an Australian effort

That same division, ( the seventh I believe) was instrumental in handing the Japanese their first land based failure along with Kakoda Trail.

For a very entertaining / extremely readable synopsis of both contains I recommend:
      The  Peter Fitzsimmons books:
      Tobruk and Kokoda
( both of which incidentally contain quite a bit concerning Chety Wilmott)

as far as the first war is concerned – I recommend Gallopili – by Les Carolyn; The writing is even better and Fitzsimmons which is saying a lot!!

I’m reading in now and find it hard to put down!
( I Always tried to read some  Aussie based military book around ANZAC day)

    • RE: Japan strategy please

      @Trisdin:

Thanks Darby, that was an excellent assessment. I will look at my board and strategize this weekend keeping your report in mind. Good work. What does everyone think about a transport, an aircraft carrier and 1 infantry as a turn 1 buy for Japan? I want to split my fleet into two and send one island hoping while the other sails up and down the coast. When the U.S enters I will bring everything back home. Is that a good strategy for my ships?

Thank You for starting the thread!
It got me thinking and I wanted to hear others’ thoughts.

When I’ve played it has been more going for the win (in which case Japan’s job is to pressure Russia - and worry USA to spending in the Pacific without any real attempt at Co-prosperity sphere – just buy Germany Time/ Space)

I think its kind of cool to try and play Japan acting in its own interests —
(in any case nerfing USA NOs will stir the pot, draw attn, and maybe help Germany that way)

    • RE: Japan strategy please

The two biggest bang for the buck are:
Malaya (3$ plus a lost  3 IPC and 10$ in NOs for the allies)
Solomon Islands denies 5 to ANZAC, works towards denying 5$ to USA and works towards gaining 5$ for USA

Japan gets the advantage of choosing when to strike …. I would recomend if you are not going to tangle with Russia early … set up to nerf most if not all of the allied NOS in that first strike.

Aleutians easy – don’t bother about getting it back
Phillipines a little harder but easy – plan to hold
Swing into Guadacanal from The Carolines – might be worth trying to hold
If your not going to get Singapore  grab either Borneo or Gilbert
Consider grabbing Johnston or Line later it can be a pain to get back and usually costs Uncle Sam 5-15

    • RE: Assistance in developing a plan for the Germany's frustration in the sea

Have not put much thought into it ……but The German Navy for Sea Lion tends to be a Carrier, their original BB and Cruiser, scattered subs, and lots of Transports – relying on a lot of support from The Luftwaffe.
i.e. they tend to be destroyer poor.

What would a fleet of hunter Russian Subs supported by a largish contingent of American Subs do to this navy ???

      Subs are cheap.
Subs can slip thru the Danish straits after a retreating German Navy (unlike surface ships)

The German player will have to think about sinking more expensive ships to spare destroyers if he wants his planes to be able to kill the attacking subs.

      Just a thought

      Thanks .

How do you get the large anti-Japanesse Navy ?

I can only buy 9 total pieces
      (and only 3 in WUS)

a Loaded Carrier a turn would be 4 total I Guess so that’s close:
cost is 37 per loaded Carrier allows 15 / turn for the Atlantic Side
maybe a dd and a tt each turn ???

    • Starting Moves USA

I’m new enough to this game that I could learn a lot from some of your collective experience. There seem to be a fair number of smart folks and seasoned warriors here.

What are the best USA Peacetime buys ( turns 1-3)
I realize these will be influenced by other events mainly Axis behavior.

So what do you buy when:

      A) Japan keeps the peace and plows/slogs thru China approaching Burma/India and Southernish Russia in the process while posturing their fleet in the Carolines.

Germany carefully consolidates France, strongly supports Italy in the Med, and builds for a Russian push, probably maintaining a decent Submarine presence.

      B) Japan attacks Russia early. (and goes strong vs China ) but doesn’t provoke Britian or USA directly

Germany threatens a convincing Sea Lion.

      C) Japan attacks Britian/USA  hard on J1 ignoring China.
Germany sends all vs British fleet to the point of sparing Normandy, but is making strong Naval buys.

I always thought this might be a better deterrent

Could scale it down to like 8 if that’s the case or – swing Mongolia from strict neutral to against the aggressor.

    • RE: What is the UK to do

I think this is a good question.

I tend to have more fun playing the Brittish then anyone else in A&A in general.
In P40 they really have it rough !

Because of the higher degree of historical realisim in this game (which I think is a big plus) compared to original A&A I don’t think the Brits can ever really do well for themselves here. (ultimately they will be whittled down, Fortress Singapore will fall as the empire fades – just as in real life)

      HOWEVER…

I think how they play is crucial to an allied victory !

The Brits job is to take on and distract the Japanese Airforce for as long as possible - if they do this well, the US / ANZAC forces will drive thru and win the day …eventually.

Here’s how (assuming a J3 attack planned by Japan)

UK1: Buy 1AA (remember you are going to take on the JAF) 2INF and 1 ART
Sprint out to the 2 4IPC DEI Islands – ending income = 29 (with NOs)
Grab your original Calcutta based AA and begin a committed trudge up the Burma Railroad.

UK2: Buy another AA Gun, 1 Tank 1 Mech  3INF  1ART (you will need the speed to counter attack from India
      Grab the last DEI Island
      Declare War on Japan !
enter Asia along the Burma Rail (probablly as an attack - as Japan will have already taken it from China in J1 and maybe again in J2)
support with your fighters and land them either in Hong Kong  or Schezhan if open Set up the first AA Gun in China and follow along with the second one.
Income now 37 with NOs and about to plumment (38/40 if Siam or FIC  is an easy grab)

UK3: buy your last AA gun (I have found you need one in evrey Burma Rail territory or the Japanese will just air clobber the spot without it and use tanks (from an asia based factory to fight where you have the guns) more boots (agin some 2 move pieces (maybe even a Tac Bomber to support your tanks)

Doing this and capatalizing on China’s ability to create new troops in just captured areas can really cause a headache for Japan.

China can grow like a cancer if Japan leaves territories captured but undefended (which it sort of has to do if is going to make headway against the Brittish army.

Don’t get me wrong Japan can eventually take the Britts down if America doesn’t get any help in there (and it can be hard for America to do) – but by then Japan is facing a strong America with Macarthur bearing down on Manilla to RETURN !
