RE: Capture Moscow on Turn 3.posted in 1941 Scenario
Your Strategy depends on Russia not doing anything on their first turn but waiting for you to capture Moscow. If the Russian player builds the average 5 inf and 3 arm on R1 they are sure to have everything they need to retake Belorussia or East Ukraine on R2 which then makes it impossible to take Moscow on G3. Honestly how many inf and art do you have left after G1 to take either of those territories and then hold them with anything but luck from a Russian counter-attack. Now if Russia wastes their army making desperate attacks on R1 then you may have a chance but this is very doubtfull unless your playing a novice.
Ok so now its G3 and you have a stack of armor in East Poland and 4 Bombers, 2 inf, and 1 AA gun back in Germany with France either under Allied control or with a couple Italians holding it until UK 3 when they retake it with the Americans landing on US 3 with even more forces. Italy has no units to retake France with on Italy 2 since they only have a fighter in Italy and maybe a couple units transported back from Africa or Bulgaria back to france. So the UK holds France or easily retakes it with even more forces backed up by the Americans who took Algeria on US 2 and can now either sidestep to France or head deeper into Africa either way the Italians can’t stop them.
Your arm in Russia than can no longer hit Moscow can now make an impressive attack on Karelia or Caucasus but with no reinforcments backing them up for G4 the Russians will have an impressive stack that can easily throw back your attack that will quickly fall apart unless you have the luckiest rolls ever. Also, Russia has been able to take back some of your previous gains now with little or no effort since you would have nothing else holding the territories you are leaving behind as you advance into Karelia or Caucasus. It would be Stalingrad all over again with a large force stranded deep in Russia with no one coming to save them and with Germany thinking about retaking France or losing Italy with a combined UK/US assualt soon to come from France.
In the end Germany must produce ground units every turn in order to continue the flow of forces into Russia and hold France or else you’ll have to expend forces retaking France that are badly needed to keep the attack on Russia rolling. It’s easy to stall out the Germans in Russia early in the game since they have few forces to back up G1’s gains. This in the end is the real problem if you pull your arm back to East poland and hope to hold Belorussia with a few inf the Russians can retake the Baltic states and Belorussia or the Ukraine and East Ukraine or all of the above if they put up a fight on G1 and took out 2 or 3 of your inf which happens more often than not.
All Russia has to do is make sure they have a strong enough defense in Belorussia or East Ukraine to hold back a 2 arm, 1 ftr attack by Italy and the whole plan is in the crapper. A lucky attack by Italy though could give you your chance to take Russia thus throwing the whole game in your favor but I would not hold my breath. :|

RE: Building Italian fleet - is there a point?posted in 1941 Scenario
Honestly an Italian fleet is a very necessary thing to build for without it the Allies can invade Africa without fear thus cutting Italy off at the knees. I started out with the extra transport on I2 so I could threaten Russia or dump troops in Libya when the Allies show up, but I’m starting to think a CV on I2 is a better way to go. Save just enough IPC’s so that your I2 purchase is a Carrier and for god sakes keep that fighter alive to land on it. After that continue to build up the fleet with DD’s and SS’s as necessary while securing Africa and helping the Germans with Garrison duty in France. This gives the Germans more troops to send East, keeps Africa longer to keep UK poor, and forces the Allies to build a fleet to come after Italy with which is expensive. Each turn the Allies are focused on your fleet is one less turn of production against the Germans which they need for the first couple turns.
If this can be achieved then all you have to do is worry about Germany’s assualt on Russia and Japans ability to get through India and then also on to Russia. You need the fleet to hold Africa and Germany needs your fleet to keep the Allies busy so for god’s sake build ships and pray for a decent German player backing you up.

RE: Movies to watch while playing AAposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
You keep mentioning “Zulu” but you leave out “Zulu Dawn”? which shows the battle just before Rorkes Drift that the Zulu’s actually “won” even though it cost them greatly.
In the end though “Kelly’s Hero’s” is number 1 in my book, you don’t have to actually watch it since just hearing the lines is enough to get me laughing.

RE: 1 destroyer for 1 subposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
I agree, why complicate a simple rule even though it does not “make” sense? You have to draw the line somewhere or else you will get bogged down in the details. I will admit it is silly that 100 subs can lose their ability from 1 destroyer but I’m over.

RE: USSR Turn 1posted in 1941 Scenario
Exactly Nickiow, I’ve seen this in both of the games I’m currently in. I did build 2 ftr’s and place them on Karelia on R1 while moving as much equipment as I could there as well in one game. Then made a counter attacker on the Ukraine and took that back. this left Germany facing a well defended Karelia and left Italy being forced to take the Ukraine back on their turn to help the Germans out. I’m not sure how this will al work out yet, but I’m hopefull this may end the flee Karelia strategy or force the Germans to take it on G1 which can be costly as well.

RE: USSR Turn 1posted in 1941 Scenario
Three fighters is a bit much, you are going to need some infantry to soak up the hits from the Italians and Germans. What do you expect to do with 3 fighters on R2? The Germans and Italians wipe out your front line on turn 1 which means on R2 you have to make some sort of counter attack which further bleeds your ground forces. Is R2 builds just infantry and maybe an armor to make up for this lack of numbers. Also, where do you deploy them? 2 in Karelia or all three in the Caucasus?

RE: Tech with planes seems just way to over powered.posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
I’d love to lower Air movement by 2 for fighters and Bombers (wait…whats that? the villagers are coming with their pitchforks and torches!!!) I’ll have to be brief! This makes getting long range aircraft more important and cuts down on the outrageous range of aircraft which in turn makes it less likely that people would buy so many. Islands and Aircraft Carriers are now way more important and worth fighting for. Of course you would lower the cost of fighters to say 8? but 12 IPC’s seems low enough for Bombers almost too low compared to 10 for fighters.
Other than that Heavy bombers are here to stay and Battleships with AA guns?? I’m sure the guys at Pearl Harbor wish they had that much firepower also. Increased movement for ships is nice but how does a sub outpace a destroyer? a 2 for movement works and keeps the Pacific a little more strategic and less gotcha moves.
I did like the suggestion of two shots for Battleships that would make them really nasty

RE: How does everyone feel about the new transport rules?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
The new transport rules are perfect (even though its cost me) I hated losing a fighter to a transport!!! Just silly in my opinion, and now I don’t have to worry about it. So, tell your friends to play a few games with the new rules and if they cry then at least follow Cmdr Jen’s idea of upping the cost which they lowered when they made them defenseless.

I’ve got Battlemap and the AA50 maps, so I’m ready to go anytime
Ok. Do you prefer Axis or Allies? Let me know and I’ll start the thread.
Have you also familiarized yourself with the in-house dice roller?
I’ve never done this on the forum before so the in-house dice roller is new to me, and as far as being the axis or allies I’ll do either one so we can make it random if you do not have a preference

RE: National Objectives vs Balanceposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
Well put Cmdr Jennifer!
The NO’s show how far behind the Allies really were at that point in the war with them controlling France, Eastern Europe, Norway, and parts of NE China. Also, Japan’s first two NO’s should be easy to get off the bat becuase they were well prepared while the Allies were caught with their pants down, and they show how well the Germans pulled off kicking Poland, France, and Britain in the backside over the first two years. These “easy” Axis NO’s motivate the Allies to get their rears in gear instead of spending 12 turns building hordes of bombers and transports and trading a few territories here and there just to keep the game dragging on.

RE: Should Germany take Egypt first turn?posted in 1941 Scenario
Look at it this way, lets say Germany ignores Egypt on G1, Britain then moves its 2 inf from Trans-jordan to Egypt and takes their two fighters in England to Africa where they can arrive on egypt by UK2
Thats two fighters spending two rounds doing nothing? No attack on the german fleet, no manning a carrier, no support for Karelia?
Just to make it even worse America and take its West coast bomber to Australia on US1 and threaten any Japanese tranports who sail alone, and then on US 2 land in Egypt to threaten Italy with SBR raids further knocking them out of the war.
Now the west coast bomber also spends two turns doing nothing? And you are aware that japan can take australia on j2? At least fly your west coast bomber into the UK and start SBR on U2. And if by some miracle there still are troops in Egypt, you can also land there.
1. They may not be attacking something each turn but instead are forcing the Axis to alter their strategy to respond to their movements. If Germany does not take Egypt on G1 then these 2 fighters spending a turn in the desert tip the balance of power in Africa in Britains favor and they can eventually go to India or land in Europe when they invade.
2. Once again the Bomber is not “doing nothing” it’s placement in Australia is a threat to any lone Jap transports and yes Japan might invade. So, you fly the American fighter from the US Carrier to Australia and force Japan to expend even more resources taking it.
Just becuase something is not attacking every single turn during the game does not mean it is wasted, or else in a couple turns the entire Jap navy is a huge waste? Are the two UK inf in South Africa a waste until the Axis come to wipe them out or they make it to Egypt so they can attack somewhere else? Their posistion in the game is a threat that forces the other side to change their strategy becuase they exist not just becuase they killed something last turn.
I do understand the frustration, but sometimes you have think longterm rather than shorterm. Which is why Germany must take Egypt on G1 and why some units do not get to attack every turn in the game.
