    • Custom Map Collection and File Storage question

      Greets all -

We’re compiling a list of custom maps and other fun stuff that we plan to use and are looking to the forum to fill any gaps or suggest better maps that others have found.

      Our List:
      AA50 non editable final
      AA50HE Phase 1….some long name
      AA42 supreme final with neutrals
      Europe1940 Basic Print Final
      Pacific1940 40 by 45 last Final

Any others out there you all use or like better? We’d love to hear about them.

ALSO - is there currently any place on A&A.org that is or could be used for file storage. PDFs, etc of maps, rule sets, and what not. It’s rather rough to comb through the forums to dig up links to things. Not a huge boardgamegeek.com fan but I do like their section that is used for attachments/file storage for each game. I realize this site is in a very different format but perhaps something could be done along those lines. With all the custom work people are putting into games I think it would be a very nice add-on to the site… and if one exists and I’m horribly blind kindly let me know and flame away.  :-D

      Cheers!

      @seththenewb:

Ask builder_chris2 what he used to get this baby made.

That map is a monster and it looks great(no real scaling issues there) Our group has 3-4 more complete boards, but none of them are close to that map. I always hate playing on a different board soon after playing on that one . .  . as big as the other boards are I always feel they’re cramped.

Ah-ha! Finally! Thank you, thank you for the info Seth. I will track him down. That is what I’m looking for!

Sorry - in a previous post I had indicated those images were not what I was looking for as they are fairly lowres for that size of an image, in my opinion. I was hoping for a better copy as those don’t scale well.

Another person looking for a highres copy of the map! If you find one I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know. I’ll do likewise!

    • RE: Map and version question

Cow and I got things worked out offline and I was able to confirm that the pics we were looking at WERE the retail versions of Europe and Pacific.

I am wondering if anyone has true highres copies of the Europe and Pacific maps, either separate or as one image. We are in the process of building a game table and plan to have maps printed on cloth to slide under an acrylic cover. The stickied post in this forum with “high-res global map” are not good enough quality for what we’d like, though they are helpful for seeing both maps connected.

      Thanks in advance.

      Now we’re on to it….

I didn’t know there WAS a retail 1940 that meshed Europe and Pacific, if I am understanding correctly.

If the pics posted from your link are just of the retail version all we need to go is go out and buy it. I had THOUGHT that the 1940 Europe/Pacific mash-up, aka 1940 Global, was all homebrew. Last I had looked into it, a couple years ago that was all there was. Also those posted pics are decent to look it but sure not high enough res to print.

      This map: http://www.axisandallies.org/wp-content/uploads/aag-huge.jpg
Can you tell me what version that is? Retail 1940 or homebrew?

    • RE: Map and version question

      Appreciate the reply Cow.

I saw the ‘hi-res global map’ post stickied and saw the board pics there - are those custom maps or is that from a boxed set? I guess those could be the actual boards from 1940 Europe and Pacific, as I don’t have those versions just yet.

Sorry - been out of A&A for a while and fell behind on versions. We’ve recently been playing 50th anny. I ended up back on the forums and found the 1940 Global War idea and like it. I miss some of the chewie-ness of the older versions.

      Any info is much appreciated!

    • Map and version question

      1. Does anyone have a pdf, etc or other high rez version of the Global War 1940 map that could be used for printing?

      2. Apologies in advance if this is spelled out elsewhere but what are the primary differences between Minor Threat and 94Canuck’s versions of the game, aside from setup cards, etc?

Thanks in advance - took some time away from A&A but it’s sure nice to be back playing!

      @katfishkris:

howdy to you dakota yoda and admiral thrawn.  someday we may have to arrange a game at gavins point dam.  do some fishin, some drinkin, and a little war in between it all.

That would be lovely. Nother 3 players from up this way in our gaming group would be up for that!

You do the fishin and I’ll do the drinkin!!

Hey Thrawn - my brother is a teacher/coach at Sioux City West and w/ the Bandits ,tho they are terrible, so I’m down that way fairly often.

    • RE: A New Bidding System

The great thing about reading all these posts is that no one’s games match 100% w/ another groups games.

Some are Axis heavy and some are Allies heavy. The beauty part is that we have someplace to discuss this stuff and can kick around ideas w/ like minded people. I think the differences indicate a pretty well made game that has its biggest variations in who is playing the game.

No braggin, no “my strat is the best’”, no “your math is wrong because mine is right”…. Well - almost none that is.

Will kick around the bid straight cash vs unit moves and see what our gang thinks.

Are you then bidding to move X # of units worth your bid or bidding to move specific units?

    • RE: A New Bidding System

Ok…. total Noob when it comes to bids.

What/how are the “old” bid systems? We never played w/ bids and always tried to resolve game imbalance by using house rules, etc.

I’d like to hear a simple concise explanation of what bids are and how the are/or were used.

Our '41 games have been Allies heavy for sure. We’ve played w/ Techs and NOs. I think Techs are going bye-bye next game for sure.

    • RE: GB Heavy Bombers

Yeah I think I like the modified tournament rules. Simple enough and less to worry about that using the interceptor/escort rules.

We’ll see what we end up with. Stuck in the current game but hopefully we can get something figured out before the next one.

    • RE: GB Heavy Bombers

      @Cmdr:

You could get HB first, is it game over for the allies then?

Honestly, with as many games as I have seen where America is taken by Japan before Russia, Germany or Italy fall, I have to chuckle when I see HBs being touted as game breaking.  Most of the time, the Allies have HBs when America falls and Japan has no technologies at all.

Ahhh yes… why didn’t we think of that. Have the Axis get HB first. That’ll fix everything. I now see the fault of our ways.

Whatever numbers you care to throw together to justify arguments as to which tech is more or less powerful is fine by me; right, wrong or otherwise. We don’t use calcs, we don’t run numbers. We play. That’s it. Our games just HAPPEN to see GB end up w/ HB and from there on out its awful hard to counter. Just happens that way. I was simply looking for suggestions for how to improve OUR game.

Thanks Gargantua, Subotai, and keplar for your constructive and helpful suggestions, which is what I was looking for.

    • GB Heavy Bombers

I see Heavy Bombers(HB) referenced on here from time to time, along w/ other gripes or suggestions pertaining to SBRs…

Short of Germany gaining Imp AA and Imp Factories technologies - what can Germany do to keep from being completely crippled by GB when they, as they always seem to in our games, get HB? Once that happens the game seems to be all but over. Double so if the US gets them and sends a couple over also. You can pretty much bet on at least 2 new bombers/turn being purchased and placed.

Between the impact of HB’s in the European Theater and Long Range Aircraft in the Pacific - I’m more than a little irked that these 2 seem to throw the game out of balance in our games. I’d guess we’re just not diverse enough in the way we approach the game to counter these things.

If it were up to me I’d do away w/ SBR and other “non-fighting” ways of doing damage - though I understand this is, and was, a legit way of conducting a war. Just much less satisfying to me:)

We considered limiting each factory to only be SBR’d by 1 or 2 HB max, sort of like Rockets are limited, but have not yet.

We don’t currently use any of the escort or defending fighter rules. Maybe that is a place to start… Any ideas would be most welcome and sorry if this a repeat or if I’m banging on something that has already been beaten to death.
