    • RE: Key strategy Allies

I think that any question when we are trying to improve our skills is a good question…especially if we are really trying to learn.  The Hessian and ShadowHAwk are right.  The key to the Pacific are the two power fleets of Japan and the U.S.  The U.S. must go after the Japanese fleets.  Carriers loaded with planes are very important as well as the subs and detroyers.  As a side mission and with the permission of your Soviet ally, land troops in Siberia and help take back Soviet territories from the Japanese if they have begun to starve out the Soviet Far East.  It takes resources from the Japanese and can alter the attention of the Japanese player a turn or two if they are interested in defending Korea or pressuring the Soviets.

PFC Pander,  That is a great looking table.  I like the edges where the players sit.  It looks beveled so that the player can lean against it.  Did you use a planer for this or cut it out on atable saw.  Either way it is a nice touch.

    • RE: Country boxes

Nice work on the boxes.  I am working on similar boxes for my table that I am building (when ever there is time) and I was wondering what you used as dividers.  I was thinking of bulsa because it is milled to a 3/16" or 1/8" board and I do not have a planer.  The problem with balsa is it is too soft and would not hold up to excited hands digging around for pieces.  Is the box 3/4" lumber?

    • RE: Adding airborne units…

Our group has used paratroopers as well.  We have been more bold with the range and payload though.  We have given the TP a cost of 8ipc’s and like your set up, no defense or attack.  They are subject to interceptors and AA fire. Out TP’s have a range of six like the bomber and carry two paratroopers.  If they TP is going to be used for an airborn operation, it must take of from an airbase.  If it is just transporting troops, it can carry any infintry (2only)because it will not drop the troops but land in friendly territory.  Wetreat a TP like a transport ship in that it must be the last hit tanken if attacked while on the ground…say the territory is overrun or your airbase is attacked.  The TP is the last unit taken as a casualty.  It is a very powerful tool but not with out its draw backs.  I know that you don’t want to leave any important territories undefended when paratroopers are available.

    • RE: AA-1940 - Rocket technology

I like the rule.  I think I would make the replacement or added launcehers a little more, maybe 10 IPC’s since it is a free SBR on an opponent’s facility.  A bomber an be shot down.  A rocket is just deadly.  A mobile unit transported or moved into a forward position would be handy for the US.  A rocket launcher in Tobruk would help soften up Egypt or Northern and Southern Italy.  If Rome is captured the US or UK, rocket strikes from London and Rome om German facilities would be devostating to the Germans.  Even Japan could use this tech on Calcutta or Sidney.

I beleive I understand what you are explaining as the purpose of the technolgy.  I hope that I did not confuse the issue.  I was just trying to work out the mechanics of the new tech.  I like the idea of using the basic tech and then, if so desired, improving that tech to make longer ranged mobile units.  I could see how the mobile unit would be advantageous to multiple factions but there are the European factions that would benefit from the basic first develoment level as well.

I may be wrong about this but since Malta is original UK territory, it is already a UK N/O.  IPC’s for all original  UK territories.  Italy takes Malta and UK doen not get the bonus and it is alot easier for Italy to hold that then say, Kenya.  I do like giving the islands a value of 1 no matter who pocesses them.

I like the idea of getting a second flying tiger to China faster.  Our thought process was to potentially help China more without directly altering the setup.  The US doesn’t have to commit more to China but can.  The Chinese/FEC have to keep the road open in order to buy American artillery, even while the US is nuetral.  A previously built tiger enroute to China via the Philipeans, as the game begins, would still demonstate the volunteer spirit and desire to aid China without a direct intervention or violation of the US government supplying weoponry.  The US could still continue to buy and fly P40’s across the pacific until entering the war, should they choose to.  Makes me think of adding a leand lease provision to G40 as well.

I like barney’s idea.  That way who ever captures the territory gets the IPC.  The NO is a good idea as well.  I need to bounce this off our gaming group.  Some suggestions are definately better than others.

    • RE: AA-1940 - Rocket technology

If I remember correctly, the V2 was a mobile unit.  The V1 was fired from fixed missle locations, I am assuming air bases.  To incorporate this into an AA game, in the way that The Hessian is suggesting would represent the first  development of the V1 which would be fired from an active air base.  The next development would represent the more mobile V2 unit and represented by the A-A gun.  Like CWO Marc, I  think that the confusion of whether a unit is a rocket launcher or an A-A gun could cause some problems.  I can see moving the V2 launch unit like an A-A gun but I would recommend differentiating between A-A guns and rocket launchers by simply painting the rocket launcher a distinct color or incorporating a sculpt like those offered by HBG.  A simple card board marker could work if you want to game test this experiment before investing in new pieces.  I could see different factions using this technology and have house ruled something similar into our games on occasion.  The US and UK have used it once and of course Germany used it alot.  The Soviets were even able use the tech once and played havoc on the German captured MIC’s.

    • RE: A simple fix for China…

One thing that our group has tried to do is allow the US to build more Flying Tigers while they are “nuetral”.  The plane is built in the Western US I/C and then on the next non-combat move, can be flown out to Hawaii or Midway.  Then on the next combat move, the flying tigear can island hop all the way to China.  It can not be transported on an allied carrier (the P40 was not set up for naval duty).  As long as the US is nuetral, it can build 1ea P40 for the Chinese.  So far, only two have been built and only one made it to China.  The second one was caught on the Philipeans when the Japanese attacked and took the Island.  The thought was to at least try to get more help to the Chinese without altering the OOB too much.  May consider a few more additional infintry to help China remain a viable force.

    • RE: Improving Italy as a playable Power

Just a suggestion but as I have seen discussed in other subject lines, what if Italy received more of a naval presence…a sub and destroyer at the mouth of the Med. perhaps.  To balance it, give the Soviets a small naval presence in the Pacific.  A sub, destroyer, mayber even a cruiser right above sea zone 6.  This would give the allies a little more in the pacific and rather deminesh a players resources, just add a little to the opponent.  Italy’s navy getting destroyed in the Toranto raid is what makes Italy such a bear to play.  Like IWillNeverGrowUp said, I have seen Italy go nuts before with the right player and the allies looking else where.

    • RE: Do you take Southern France as Germany or Italy?

I like to take Southern France with the Germans on G2.  I also like to strafe Yugoslavia with the Germans from Southern Germany and Romania in the first round and then retreat all of the forces to Romania.  It weakens the Yugo’s and moves the German forces all into a better position to hit the Soviets.  The weakened Yugo’s will fall alot easier to the Italians in Italy’s first round.  That makes it possible to activate the Bulgarians for the Italians and sets them up for the invasion of Greece by Italy round two.  Germany can build u-bouts in the med and a transport with a few ground units to head for Egypt to secure an objective once the Italians have it.  It may take a couple of rounds but German Southern France has proven to be a better use of the facility and the Italians in the Balkens gives them money to work with and is moving them in the direction of the Soviet Union or the Middle East.

    • RE: New to Axis and Allies Global – What do I need to get started?

Gutten Auben Stauffenberg (forgive my spelling).  May I suggest an alternate course if you do not find what you are looking for.  It sounded by one of your posts that you are not opposed to modifying existing products to make what you are looking for.  If you have plastic structural pieces availalble such as you might find at a model rail road shop or hobby shop, you may be able to find some small round plastic rod (0.25mm to 1mm diameter) to use as smoke stacks.  Cut to an appropiate length and glue them on the Monopoly style houses and hotels.  Three stacks on a hotel for a major IC and one stack on a house for a minor IC.  you can then spray paint them to what ever color you want.  My dad was a US marine and he was very fond of saying “adapt and overcome”.  Good luck.

    • RE: 1940 game table build

That is a truly great looking table.  I have been looking for ideas on what to incorporate in my table and I saw some things in your design that has sparked some ideas.  My table will need to be a bit larger because I have a custome map on a 4x8 sheet of masonite but the concepts are still usable.  GREAT JOB!

Welcome Stauffenberg.  The grey factories can be purchased from Historicalboardgaming.com.  Look down the left side and you will see a section of previos games.  The various pieces are available, including the grey factories.  Of course, those were the major inductrial complexes.  I hope this helps.

    • RE: France and Canada as one Power, two Economies.

There was discussion on the board last week about Free French and Vichy French forces and a government in exile still collecting income from the colonies.  I’m not sure that all of Canada should become France-West but I could see Quebec becoming a capitol in exile sight.  The remainder of Canada would continue as part of the Commonwealth.  A minor French IC could be built there and Free France could still build there.  It would be a very small income to almost nill but it would keep the French player some what involved.  I agree with Flashman though, no one should be relegated to play France alone.  Let the Soviet or UK player manage them.

    • RE: Cavalry variants

I like the cavaly option even in a WW2 senerio.  They would be cannon fodder and of little effective combat use but they are mobile.  It would be great to throw some cavalry as blocking units to prevent blitzing.  I could see the UK in Africa, The Soviets, and even the Italians making use of this unit.  I would give them a +1 when supported by artilley and a defense of two.  Defending cavalry would really be dismounted and thus regular infintry.  I’ll have to try it to see what happens.
