    • RE: Losing France Capitol on First Turn.

And it is not a given that Germany will always take Paris the first round.  I’ve seen France survive the first round attack on two occassions.  It really delays Germany’s game.

zman, As Charles de Gaulle pointed out, you may not have captured Moscow right away, but you should have most of the required axis victory cities.  The trick is the last two or so.  Besiege Moscow until your Russion factories supply enough infintry and artillery to finally storm Moscow.  You will be making so much more than he will be.  You will be able to spend on navy and bombers.  The navy blocks and attacks allied ships attempting to land.  German u-boats should be sitting in SZ109 convoying the UK.  Surface ships with bomber and fighter cover should make every appraoch risky. The bombers pound London with SBR attacks.  If the the allied focus is on the pacific side and even if they should bottle up Japan, that is not an allied victory.  Two axis capitols have to fall before it is an allied victory.  If Germany is making as much as you should be by swollowing up Soviet territory and the middle east; Germany can afford to help Italy in the Med. as well.  The object is the victory cities.  Do what you need to take and then hold them. You may feel overwelhmed at the moment but a few games under your belt and reading the forum’s suggestions will help you get a feel for the game.  Besides, half the fun of the game is trying to figure out what to do in the face of impossible (improbable) odds.  HAve fun.

If you can take out the Noreigen/Finnish troops and the door is open ti the Siviets, take it.  I don’t think that this is crazy.  If the German player is taking their time and not threatening Leningrad, it makes sence to me.  If nothing else, you have redirected German troops to ga back and take all of that back in order to get their IPC’s back.  There are alot of avenues into Europe for the allies.

      Welcome zman

I play Germany with a deluted version of dark skies.  Not quite as many bombers as Arthur suggests but still enough to pound on any entrenched target.  I find that if I build 1 or 2 bomber for the first 4/5 rounds, I usually have enough to do what I need.  If the Soviets turtle, take the other cities and build infintry and artillery there.  Surround Moscow for the seige.  Let your mechanised unit run wild sucking up the ipc’s from Russia and the middle east.  Let the Japanese have the eastern Soviet territories but threaten India with the mobile German units.  Just threaten them unles they cave in and allow you to take it.  Once you see that you have the Soviets bottles up in Moscow and you are bombing the stuffings out of them every round.  You won’t need that much there to hold them in.  You already have two of the victory cities that you need.  Redirect your builds to West Germany and the French coasts.  Get troops up to Norway.  Even a few at a time.  If you are losing bomber in your SBR’s of Moscow, build some more. You should need fewer and fewer with each turn you pound Moscow.  Keep the new bombers in the West.  Help the Italians take Gibralter.  resist the allies as long as you need to so sew up Moscow then build for the next phase…getting the last couple of cities.  Sounds easy but the implementation in the right timing is what makes the game fun.

    • RE: Russia's Far East Army

I like to march 6 of the far east infintry back toward Moscow.  I generally leave the others as a deterent to the Japanese.  They may take far east territories but they will have to fight for them.  The six moving back toward Moscow may move south to the west side of China like Taamvan said if the Japanese are moving through China with no signs of stopping.  The Urkrane and Leningrad will build men and artillery as long as they can to slow the German advance.  With draw and counter attack as much as possible.  Sacrifice to one infintry to prevent blitzes and hit them back on the Soviet turn.  Delay and redirect German efforts as much as you can.  Give your allies (thta is if they are paying attention) time to hit the Germans and Italians from the west as soon as possible.  Even if they can’t sustain the invasion, the fact that they are coming should alteast redirect some of their resources back toward Europe.  You play a defensive game and rarely get any glory for it but if you can slow the axis down, you may give the allies the victory.  I have been stimmied a couple of times when Larrie plays the Soviets.  A good player can make all of the difference.

Welcome GiddyXray.  I really like the board.  Very nive job.  I have had painted a map for the Global 40 game on a 4’x8’ sheet of masonite.  I t works well but it is rather dark.  I like your lighter colors, especially for the sea zones.  I am working on a table to go with it so I may repaint the map and lable it again as well.  Your work is very nice.

Great video.  I love using dividers as well.  It really does cut down on time and helps new players pick the correct unit they want.

    • RE: Custom AnA Global Table

The table is looking really nice.  I had to go back and watch the video again to see how everything is assembled.  I plan on adding drawers under the gaming surface to put the game pieces in.  I do not mean to impune your work or presume to tell you what to do but may I suggest adding a small shallow shelf along each side for the game piece boxes.  It would free up some space on the gaming surface for your dice towers and game cards.  They could be easily added with stock lumber from the Home Depot that you went to.  They could be made out of a 1"x6"x8’ for each side.

One the other subject, I have always worn my ancestry with pride.  I can identify with alot of different ethnic and national celebrations and feel like I belong.  I personaly am a sucker for accents.  I live in central Illinois here in the U.S, and I have three major accents around me every day.

    • RE: Custom AnA Global Table

As an American, the best way to describe my ancestery is…well…I’m a mutt.  My ancesters were very inclusive in whom they procreated with.  My name is normally spelled in the traditional biblical way of David but I saw the Welsh spelling in Steven Lawhead’s version of the Artherean legion and I have used it ever since for my e-mail address.  :-D

I didn’t consider freight charges when I suggested HBG.  On the forum here, it is not always obvious where some one is from and shipping across international boards does get expensive.

I have been planning a table construction of my own and I like your design and the strength you got from the light weight materials.  Very nice design.

HBG has roundel coasters for drinks that are about the size that you have drawn.  I believe they have all of the nations involved.  I’d love to see the nuetral powers coasters included.  HBG includes them with an order that they ship out.

    • RE: Fleet Sizes

Good afternoon Gamerman01.  Do you use the US airbases on Wake, Midway, and Guam for the bombers?  I played a game once before as the US doing this but I think I focused too much on this tactic and did not invest in the destroyers or subs as you have suggested.

    • RE: Yet another AxAG40 Rant about…Balance Bidding and Bias

We sometimes allow the trade as well but it is nice to be “forced” in to playing a new faction once in a while.  I think it helps everyone learn to appreciate the nation that you may be good at but it expands ones ability to play on any side.  It is good to learn something new and if we are nudged into it sometimes, its still all good.

    • RE: Yet another AxAG40 Rant about…Balance Bidding and Bias

Well said Taaman.  Our group has not used the bid system and play it by the OOB rules and set up.  We have made some house rules about paratroopers and such but the set up is OOB.  The Axis and Allies are split pretty evenly as to the number of wins and loses. The longer the game goes, the more it seems work to teh Allies advantage but the Axis seem to have the advantage early on but time does work against it, at least in our games.

knp7765… we use roundels drawn randomly from a pouch to determine play but I like your idea as well.  Is a factions dice removed from the subsequent roles once it has been claimed.  In you your example since you were able to choose Germany; did everyone then remove the German dice form the following roles?

    • RE: How popular is the Sea Lion feint nowadays?

I have only played Germany a relativly few times in comparison to the guys I play against and what I have seen ob this forum.  I have not tried the sea lion stratogy simply because the Soviet player I seen to always face just tears me up.  I know that it is my play and I could probably pull off the invasion of England but the Soviet player would really make me pay for it.  I don’t try it but if the UK player leaves an open window, it is worth the risk if I can get it “cheap”.  To explain, I always buy a transport or two early in the game…not as a feint but as a way to get troops to Lenningrad or Norway should the Allies try to take it or to reclaim it if they have.

    • RE: Are Allies doomed from the outset on G40 map?

Wow…I didn’t realize that the game that I have so much fun playing was so screwed up and unfair.  There are a number of posts along the forum that sound like whining rather than newre players trying to discover what experienced players have done over the years with the purpose of becoming better players.  When all is said and done, it is a game.  Have fun with it.  Try something and if it doesn’t work,  try something else.  If the axis have an advantage then learn ways to overcome the advantage.  We had to in real like anyways.  To get back to the opening question: are the allies doomed from the outset on the G40 map?  No.  Are they at a disadvantage?  Maybe but that’s what makes playing the allies so much of a challenge and thus fun.  Guys…Just have some fun.  The world is hard and nasty enough without bringing into our leasure time.  Just an old man’s opinion I guess.

    • RE: China?

Good day Tolstoj.  I have done relatively well with China in a few games.  It is a completely different animal to play.  It is a guerrila war in that you do not immediately plan to drive your enemy out with sweeping battles.  It is a war of attrition.  Think of the Soviets in Afghanastan in the early 80’s and the US in Vietnam.  The point was to make the enemy pay for every territory they took and and they couldn’t count on any territory being secure.  The Chinese “pop up” in any owned territory. The Japanese player must leave defending troops behind or be threatened with losing an unguarded territory.  China is to slow the roll of the Japanese…not defeat them until later in the game when China with some UK help, can claim all of the mainland.  ShadowHAwk is right.  Spread out and become a thorn in the Japanese players…neck.  If you use house rules, add some artillery or consider allowing the US to supply additional flying tigers before they enter the war.

    • RE: Contain Germany

I play a more balanced game of 60/40 leaning to teh Atlantic early on and then switching to the Pacific at around turn 6-7.  U.S. bombers to the UK to help pound German factories and loaded transports, destroyers and cruisers to Gibraltor.  Your there in one move from the East Coast and from there can hit Norway, Normandy, Gibraltor, Morocco, or Italy.  If the Italy has taken Gibraltor…take it back and open up the Med.  If the UK is strugling in North Africa, Help them out.  How does this Contain Germany?  The opening of the Med means the usually less protected souther Europe or Balkens are easier to take and advance right at the heart of Germanyand can redirect their efforts to give the Soviets a chance to fight back. Once you get a series of convoys going back and forth between Gibraltor and the East Coast and the Med has been opened, you can hit the Germans in so many places that they will have to expend Soviet bound resources in Western Europe.  They can’t fight in every direction.  Fighters and bombers from Gibraltor (add an airbase) and London can help defend against dark skies and also activate green skies and we in the midwest know what green skies mean.
