    • RE: Can you build a naval base on a territory that does NOT touch water?

      @Gargantua:

      Airbase will do,

      Minor would have been cheaper, but can’t be built on a 1 IPC territory.  And you don’t want to give up a factory close to your capital.

      I almost asked if AA guns could be built like facilities anywhere… because I didn’t see it specified in the rules…

      You Could build a naval base in one of the territories next to the Caspian Sea.  Should you ever want to try a blocking move there.

    • RE: How long do your Global 1940 games last?

      The two games that I have finished (in one go) have lasted 13 and 15 hours respectively.  I have played 4 others in an ongoing format where we would play a turn every other day.  All of these games lasted over a week.

    • RE: Aircraft carriers in battle

      don’t tip your carrier as he may just decide to retreat from battle, and your fighters will then have no place to land.  In certain circumstances it’s o.k. to tip your carrier; when you are at a port, the carrier will repair at the begining of your next turn and fighters always get 1 movement point to try and land, so if you are at port they land on the land territory that the port is on.

    • Can ANZAC Claim Brazil?

      I was wondering if ANZAC could claim Brazil?  Larry is thinking (or so I’ve heard) about putting a minor IC on New Zealand.  SO a possible first turn buy for ANZAC would be a transport in New Zealand, bring the exsiting transport plus one infantry and on ANZAC2 go claim Brazil for the extra cash and INF.

      @The:

      @Daedelus:

      In a lot of the games I have seen, Russia just leaves 1 Inf. on each boarder territory with Germany.  1 Italian Tank can certainly win against 1 INF.

      Yes but the Russian inf still can kill a tank and so the Italians won’t be able to occupy the territory until later and so Germany would have to capture it and this doesn’t work. Also why risk 3 ipc for a 1 ipc-2 ipc gain? Because this means Su DOWS and uses the reserves behind the front line or in Stalin and Lenin to recapture and Germany + 5 ipc but then SU will get NO because 125 will not be occupied by Axis if Germany plays Sealion

      The original question wasn’t “why,” it was “can you….”  I think the why has been answered earlier in the thread.  Basically it comes down to can you exploit a mistake or a short comming of Russia by doing this.  So sometimes it’s good move, and other times it won’t be.

      Why waste 3 inf? Let small numbers of German tanks invade 2 tt into Russia and be taken out.

      There are a couple of reasons why this happens.

      1. Russia cannot defend thier front line against Germany.  If they concentrate, Germany avoids them, if they spread out in medium groups they get “piece-mealed.”

      2. The Russian player wants to stop blitzing.  This means that for at least a round they can prevent German tanks from getting easy, undefended second-row Russian territories.

      3. Bait; the Russian player can try and bait the Germans into moving to easier, less defended spots.

      4. Force the Italians to be the can-opener.  Better to fight the Italians with Russia than have the Italian tanks in Africa.

      5. The Germans may decided NOT to go two Territories and you have lost your front row for nothing.

      6. You only want germany to move one territory per turn. The Infantry are speed bumps.

      7. The original point that I was addressing was “can 1 Italian Tank take a Russian Territory so that the Germans can move in to a “Russian” Territory (now italian) with out declaring War.”  The Answer is Yes.  I’ve seen it done on more than one occasion.

      @Daedelus:

      Russia can declare war on Germany if Italy delares war on Russia.

      But by then, Germany will have already collected its 5

      I was just speaking to the point that special forces brought up, in that Russia is free to declare war on Germany if Italy declares war on Russia, I agree that Germany will recieve it’s bonus 5 IPCs for not being at war with Russia.

      This absolutely rocks!  Great job.  I have a request (if you don’t mind).  Can you set up some roundels (without text) on a page.  I would like to print some out on “sticker” page stock to make stickers for my magnetized dry erase board.  If it’s too much work don’t worry about it, but you do see pretty handy with this stuff!

    • RE: Q about the new scrambling rules

      I believe so.  This is from Larry’s website"

      “To sum it up: If there is a sea battle, involving an amphibious assault or not, all neighboring aircraft that meet the scramble requirements can participate in the sea battle. If there is only an amphibious assault and there is no sea battle, only the territory be attacked from the sea can scramble up to 3 aircraft.”

    • RE: When you land on a carrier from another SZ, do you count the SZ…

      no.

      http://www.wizards.com/AvalonHill/rules/AVL1940_RuleBook.pdf

      page 12 and page 28 cover it.  One exception though.  A ftr belonging to a friendly power that is on a carrier that has been damaged is considered cargo and cannot load/unload until the carrier is repaired.

      @calvinhobbesliker:

      @Blitz:

      Wait can Japan build a Major in Hong Kong with the new Alpha rules?

      No new major ICs can be built.  Original ones can’t be upgraded (unless liberated by the original power or a friendly power).

      No, you can build majors on your original territories.

      True. The only major factory I have purchased in thus game was a major factory in Rommania (I think you only need a minor) and once, a major in Shanghai (Japanese).

    • Neutrals and a possible Political optional rule phase.

      I was thinking about another element of the game that is new to this edition, the Politics and how this could be ebhanced or alteredto make an interesting Senario.

      You could use this in a future optional rules section (perhaps). What if you could try and convert/bribe/beg true neutrals to become one step closer to your alignment?

      I have read on the boards that people wantto be able to use Turkey but aren’t happy that Sweden and Spain will join the other side (let alone all the other neutrals).

      What you could do is have a political phase (maybe at the same time as weapons development) where 5 IPCs (or 10) would allow you a die roll to shift a neutrals alignment by one. You could buy as many tries as you want but would only get one die roll per neutral per turn (buy three rolls, but only get 1 for each Spain, Turkey or Sweden). Alternatively you could put the phase at the end of the turn, after non-combat moves to prevent “scooping” and allow the other powers to react. Either by their own polictical guestures or by just attacking the recently swayed country.

      Maybe this would unbalance the game, but Franco’s Spain had been a close ally of Germany in the 1930’s and this could represent Germany’s constant nagging to repay the favor.

      This would also allow a country like the U.S.A. to have another influnce on the game from behind the lines. You may have to put a rule in that the power making the diplomatic guesture roll would have to be at war (but maybe not as they would have to be at war to accupy the neutral and claim the IPCs).

      Thoughts?

    • RE: Russian N.O. "Loop-Hole."

      I guess the concept was that the U.K. could sacrifice the occasional fighter withour screwing up the Russian N.O…  If Germany decided not to attack a given Territory to have the U.k. Fighter deny the N.O… then Russia is still ahead because they weren’t attacked.

      Anyway, the U.K. could land on U.K.4 as I would think that %100 of Russian PLayers would declare war on R4 if Germany had not declared war by then.
