      @CWO:

      Thanks for those two links HKL.  I agree that HMS Calypso would be a stretch as a present-day survivor, since she was burned to the waterline; “relic” would perhaps be a better characterization than “survivor”.

      It’s too bad that the German WWI battlecruiser Goeben (later the Tukish warship Yavuz) didn’t get preserved.  She was in service until 1950 and in existence until the 1970s, when Turkey offered her for sale to West Germany.  West Germany turned down the offer, so she was sold for scrap in 1973.  Sad.

      That is sad.

      Yes, the other name was Desert One, but Eagle Claw is also used interchangeably.  My mistake.

      @Chacmool:

      “Mensch ärgere Dich nicht” is still THE game to play in Germany when family comes together on sunday afternoons.  My oma wins almost every time

      Keep her away from Axis & Allies – she might turn out to have natural talents at playing that game too, and just imagine how you’d feel at having your grandmother slaughter you in a Global 1940 duel.

      Brilliant video Marc.

      I am tempted to go to Duxford on the 14th Sept to see the two Lancasters fly together.
      They even have 5 or 6 WW1 replicas flying that day too. Is a 3 1/2 hour drive and I would have to come back the same day. Think it is too much for me, now I have a family.

      Really the only thing that they talked about was with the Mistsibushi Shipyards as a whole as building port for their ships.  Most of the damage that the shipyards received were from bombings that took place on about August 1st.  The Power plant, and the factory (I want to say tanks or steelworks), were not so lucky.  The Shipyards were shielded by the hills.

      Maine? Interesting. Would have been Massachusetts then. They did go far away (almost Canada, like Marc suggested).

      @CWO-Marc The vast majority of vintage “combat” photographs and videos are staged or reenacted. The ones that aren’t are often blurry and ill-composed because the photographer was being shot at.

      I wouldn’t really expect them to show battle with actual bullets flying until the gopro era

      @CWO:

      Here’s a set of D-Day photographs with a cool feature: if you use your mouse to grab the dividing line that runs down the centre of each shot, you can sweep it back and forth to compare the scene as it was at the time with a shot of the same location today.

      These are cool photos Mark. thanks for sharing. :-)

      @wittmann:

      I love how the winner’s fitness will be assessed. Bet it will be really noisy and uncomfortable

      Yes, the crew will definitely be in need of a little pick-me-up when they arrive at their destination.  Irish coffee was invented in the early days of transatlantic civil aviation for similar reasons.  I hope that the documentary film which will be made about the flight will eventually be released on video, which would be a fascinating thing to watch.

      The best monopoly house rule I ever played with is when you roll the dice, to take the result and have your choice of moving either forwards or backwards. However, if you pass go in the backwards direction, you pay the bank $200. Trust me, this rule makes an otherwise boring game interesting if you have a choice of two spaces where you can go with each dice roll.

      @General:

         Cool!  Go Army!     Those were the days.    "Let’s all sing along"  A person doesn’t see that kind of stuff anymore. The Office of Emergency Management of yesteryear sure operated a bit different differently than the Homeland Security of today in regards to information to the public. Get’s me kinda in the mood to beat the Russians into the Ukraine.

      Yes, I love the almost boyish enthusiasm in this video.  It’s made in a similar spirit to those G.I. Joe action figure commercials from the early 1960s, which actually used new lyrics set to the same tune (“G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe, fighting man from head to toe…”).

      Some of the armoured / motorized maneuvers in the Caissons video remind me of the tank and bouncing-jeep sequence (set to the tune of “You’re in the Army Now”) found near the end of the classic WWII cartoon “War Dogs” :

      Agreed. I know she does not recognise them though. She always chooses the American Carrier and Ft, incidentally. We have not been downstairs in the cellar to study for a long time now. My friend was lodging with us and we went down most days. He left over six months ago.
      As long as she points out the Tiger (131 at Bovington), nothing else will matter.
      Al is keen to let her see these war machines, but it will be a while yet.

      I hope you have been well Marc.
