    • RE: A&A as a training tool for ROTC cadets

I recommend Peter Perla’s book “The Art of Wargaming: A Guide for Professionals and Hobbyists”.  As the title indicates, it covers both hobby wargaming and professional wargaming (the latter meaning wargaming as a military training tool).  He looks at the history of wargaming and at the theoretical considerations that go into designing wargames.

For your purposes, you’ll find particularly valuable his discussion of wargaming levels.  These range from the higher-level strategic games (in which the players represent the national command authorities of the opposing sides) to the lower-level tactical games which operate down to the level of individual squads.  Obviously, the instructional purpose of professional games will vary greatly depending on the level of the game and the level of the players.  A related point is that the higher you go in game levels, the more the processes involved are abstracted because the forces being represented are larger and larger.  A tactical game might resolve combat by simulating the process of individual weapons being fired at individual targets.  A strategic-level game, depicting whole army groups, might resolve combat by simply comparing overall force ratios in a very abstract way – so the modeling involved is very different.

For your students, by the way, intermediate-level operational games (which tend to depict even in a theatre of war) might be a good choice for some of what you describe in your list (for instance logistics).

Keep in mind that hobby wargames, even though they can be very big and complex from a mechanical point of view, still tend to be very simplistic (from the point of view of a professional soldier) at simulating warfare.  I’ve heard the argument, for example, that the comparison which can be made between Axis and Allies and professional wargames is the same comparison which can be made between the classic board game Monopoly and the kind of university-level business simulation games which are sometimes played as exercises in Masters of Business Administration programs.  Hobby wargames are primarily designed to be fun to play, with any lessons learned about warfare being treated as a bonus; professional wargames are intended to be teaching tools (or in some cases planning tools to test new concepts and strategies), with no aim of being fun.  This isn’t to say that a hobby wargame can’t be used professionally to teach useful things to military students, but the limitations of these games have to be kept firmly in mind.

Anyway, good luck with your project and, as I said at the beginning, do check out Perla’s book.

      @DoManMacgee:

Huh. Never knew the logistics in moving Tanks around was this big of a challenge.

It can get even worse when you start pushing the limits of tank weight and/or size.  In terms of weight, sixty-five tons or so is roughly as high as you can get before you start running into problems with the load-bearing capacity of bridges.  In terms of size, rail transportation becomes a serious problem when a certain tank width is exceeded because it violates the loading limits for standard rail traffic; over that limit, rail transportation on parallel tracks has to be scheduled to avoid trains going in the opposite direction, and has to use circuitous routes which avoid any railway tunnels and bridges which are too narrow.  Germany’s notorious experimental Panzer VII Maus superheavy tank had both those problems.  As I recall, rail transportation of the Maus not only needed careful planning but also required removing the tank’s treads and wheels.  And its staggering weight of 188 tonnes – three and a half times the weight of a Tiger I – made it unable to use bridges; it was fitted with a detachable snorkel to enable it it to cross rivers on its own, semi-submerged.  As for battlefield movement, the thing could barely crawl; it was more of a mobile bunker than a practical tank.

? I am having trouble sorting out the pieces for all of them and I have EVERY single Axis & Allies game ever made, from the 1984 edition to the latest reprint of Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition.

I am using these numbers to sort out many thousands of pieces

Your collection of A&A games sounds similar to mine, and I can relate to what you’ve said about the challenge of sorting out thousands of sculpts. It depends, however, on what you mean by sorting. If you’re talking about unscrambling a bunch of mixed-together sculpts and figuring out precisely which game each one came from, the basic answer is: it’s easy for the game-unique sculpts (like the blockhouses from D-Day), but anywhere from difficult to impossible for everything else because many sculpts have been re-used identically in several games. And by “identically” I mean identically down to the finest details, as opposed to sculpts which have undergone subtle (or not-so-subtle, or even flagrant) changes of design at some point or another. An example of a flagrant change is the Japanese artillery piece, whose towing struts were closed in the original version and are open in the current one. An example of a not-so-subtle change is the “refreshment” of the design of the five main power infantry units which occurred at some point; compare, for instance, the helmet shapes of the older and newer US and USSR infantrymen. An example of a subtle change is the American destroyer, which gained (or lost?) a notch in the funnel area of its superstructure, or the British Spitfire fighter, whose wings went from upturned to flat.

On top of all that, there’s the added complication of changes which may be intentional design changes or may just be manufacturing inconsitencies. The American Sherman tank, for instance, has many kinds of turret shapes and many types of semicircular hatch covers on top of the turret. An an extreme example: one of the German strategic bombers I own has a decidedly odd variant shape, even though it’s clearly the same plane (a Junkers JU-88) as all the other ones in my collection, and I can only conclude that it’s some sort of factory error caused by, perhaps, the injected plastic cooling in an abnormal way. (I jokingly designate it as the Fuhrer’s private airplane, even though his transport of choice was a three-engined aircraft).

All of this applies to colours and shades too. Some colour uses have a single possible source (e.g. the cherry-red Japanese units, which are from the first printing of the original Pacific game), while others are found all over the place. And shading differences which are evidently manufacturing inconsistencies further complicate the picture: I have some Europe 1940 / Pacific 1940 sculpts (some units are unique to those games, and some are even specific to either the first or second editions) in two different shades for the US and for Germany, even though the basic colours are the same.

The way I deal with all this, personally, is to keep identical sculpts together (sorted in plastic tackle boxes) without bothering about which game they come from. Just distinguishing between identical and non-identical ones already provides ample differentiation for me, given all the factors that have to be judged to decide whether two give sculpts are or aren’t exactly the same.

Incidentally, I’ve sometimes wondered about those infantry base numbers too and I’d be interested in hearing an authoritative answer from anyone who happens to know it. I don’t think the numbers are game-specific; my impression is that in any given game, each infantry sculpt from a given country has its own number. But that theory may not be correct…and it still doesn’t explain what purpose (if any) the numbers serve. Maybe they just have some sort of manufacturing-related function.

    • RE: What Would Happen If Spain Joined The Axis?

Maybe not much.  Spain was still recovering from the Spanish Civil War and wasn’t in a good position to fight another war.  On other hand, this would have created the possibly of Germany launching an overland attack against Gibraltar (assuming Vichy France could be persuaded to give German troops permission to traverse it when going from Occupied France to Spain).  A German occupation of Gibraltar, and the possible resulting Italo-German control of the Straights of Gibraltar, would have made Britain’s position in the Mediterranean more difficult.

Here are some rough scales for A&A units:

Infantry = 1/72 or maybe just a little smaller.

      Tanks and vehicles = 1/285

Aircraft = Fighters are bigger than 1/700, I think they are about 1/600 scale. Tactical Bombers are about the same. Strategic Bombers are a smaller scale, but I’m not sure what it is.

Ships = Varies from capital ships to the smaller vessels. Battleships and Carriers are smaller than 1/2400. It’s closer to 1/3000 or maybe even 1/3500. I’m not sure about the smaller vessels but they are bigger in scale. If Destroyers and Submarines were at the same scale as the Battleships, we would barely be able to see them, much less play with them on the board.

    • Category and topic sorting questions

Today I reset my password and signed on to the new forum for the first time. I’m still in the early stages of familiarizing myself with the new look and functionalities, but there’s one thing that’s puzzling me. Each section of the forum has a “Sort By” clickable setting with four options: Newest to Oldest, Oldest to Newest, Most Posts and Most Votes. The default is Newest to Oldest, which is great because that’s my preference, but it doesn’t seem to work properly. As an example: a short while ago, I went to page 1 of the A&A&Zombies section. The section starts, correctly, with half a dozen pinned threads (which are in the right recency order), but then it’s followed by this list of threads (see below) whose order jumps around chronologically. Is the sorting function still being fine-tuned? Or does the “Newest to Oldest” concept reflect the date of a thread’s original creation, rather than reflecting how recently a new post was added to it?

It’s too bad that Larry’s site has expired: the General Discussion thread “Anyone with info on sculpts?”, in which Krieghund provided sculpt identification information, was one of the reference sources I used when I was compiling my sculpt identification charts. On the brighter side, Krieghund is still with us over here at A&A.org, which is a good thing.

Thanks for clarifying that (if I understand correctly), the non-pinned threads are indeed sorted by how recently a post was added to them, that the newest post in a given thread is shown in the right-side column, and that the dates given on the left side of the screen are the dates of original thread creation rather than the date of the most recent post (which explains the non-chronological order of those dates). If you compare the picture posted by Panther with the screenshot I’ve posted below, however, you’ll note that the order of the posts on the left side of the screen matches but the order on the right side of the screen doesn’t match. In my screenshot, the chronological order jumps around on both sides of the screen, which is puzzling. (This actually looks more like Djensen’s screenshot than Panther’s.)0_1542221893203_Post Order.jpg

So the task is to find a solution for correctly displaying text when many badges are present.

Not a task for us, that’s a bug and needs to be reported to the NodeBB team.

Hmm…interesting problem. It would be nice if the NodeBB folks could find a solution to this problem, such as by having an excessively long line of badges display as two superimposed shorter lines if it goes over a certain length limit. Badges are an incentive for members to donate funding to support the forum, and it would be a shame (and ironic) if contributors ended up having to hide the record of those incentives because of a design problem in the software of the very forum that they’re supporting. A further irony is that the members most affected by the problem would mainly be the ones who have the longest record of supporting the site.

@djensen said in Forum Migration To Do List:

@CWO-Marc I think we have a unique use of badges in our community. BGG aside most other services just give you a badge for your subscription period and don’t date stamp it. What I would like is tick marks (maybe 3-5 pixels wide) for “hidden” badges and they expand when you roll over them. So you could have 1-2 primary badges and the rest are small blocks of color.

Yes, our community’s use of badges does resemble what could be called the “Marshal Zhukov aesthetic” (a uniform covered in medals, orders and decorations), which isn’t surprising in view of the WWII theme of A&A.

At any rate, your idea to have the badges normally display as small images which could individually expand to full size (such as when you roll over them or put your pointer on them) sounds like a good approach. Rather than using an abstract tick mark, however, I’d suggest using some sort of small circular rosette, which would be similar to the practice which is often used for civilian decorations: the full-sized decoration is only worn on certain formal occasions, but in day-to-day life the recipient can wear a miniature version of the insignia, which is essentially a lapel pin. See the attached picture as an example. The full-sized A&A badge could (and I think should) keep its traditional horizontal rectangular form, which has the advantage of being similar to a military service ribbon but has the disadvantage of having a space-consuming shape even when it’s reduced to a tiny icon.0_1542303833734_Badges and Miniatures.jpg

To follow up on my last post, here’s a rough example of what the miniature rosette concept would look like. I used my own string of badges as a prototype, and the mini version ended up being about 50% shorter than the full-sized string. The minis are squared-off versions of the rectangular badges, which actually works better than circular rosettes – it’s equivalent in compactness, and it reflects more effectively the angular (rather than circular) shape of the full-sized badges.0_1542308486878_Badge Miniatures.jpg

Thanks; in other words, the None setting causes the oval graphic to serve the same function as the blue “Home” textual link that appears just below it on every page except the forum’s home page. I habitually use that textual link when I want to return to the forum’s home page, so I’ll keep doing that to go there and henceforth I’ll use the little home graphic to go to the site’s home page. Much appreciation for the clarifications.
