    • RE: Piece count limitation question

      @taamvan:

No one I know has ever played with such a limit, especially because it really comes down to chipping up vs having the individual pieces crowd the board.   Germany does not have enough tanks to complete most games of G40, and there aren’t even enough tanks included with the 2nd ed set to support Oztea’s G41 setup certainly not enough to support YG/Garg’s Deluxe setup without custom pieces or multiple copies of the game.  We often use French pieces as proxies before the combat phase, after casualties the situation usually doesnt require they stay on the board.

One recommendation is to buy another set of chips, we have blue or pink chips to represent 2s and a few yellow chips for 10.   Since factories produce 3 units and there are plenty of static 3 stacks in the setup, these chips add another level of convenience (so you have 1,2,3,5,10).

I know you want a citation, but except what you are saying about Classic, I have not heard of such a limitation.   1941, WW1, Ikusa all have far too few pieces included in the box to play a normal game, so it would be irrational to assume that the piece sets included act as limits.

Where is the “YG/Garg” set up information? Don’t know that ive ever seen it.

    • RE: Sub vs carrier w/ planes rules clarification

      Ok thanks,
so then if the carrier is damaged or destroyed then plane is awarded 1 space to find a suitable landing space else lost?

    • Sub vs carrier w/ planes rules clarification

Hi, looking for a quick confirmation.
If only subs attack a carrier containing a fighter (of the same country as the carrier i.e. its NOT cargo), do the planes get a defense roll against the subs? This is purely subs vs only 1 carrier and 1 fighter.
I argued with my buddy that they do but he thinks otherwise and I couldn’t get a clear confirmation skimming the rule book.
      Thanks in advance!!

    • Alternate Setups for G40 game

Has anyone posted a playable alternate setup? I’m talking a totally different setup and not add 1 unit here or there for balancing. Apologies if there’s a thread on this already.

    • RE: Seeking House Rules experience

Good point in the last paragraph, a turn does encompass multiple months and you would expect some sort of naval engagement if both forces were conducting active operations and not sitting in home port. Adding a dice roll to determine if a naval battle occurs adds too many variables for the moment. But I’d certainly like to add a retreating rule in my next home game. I think this would create a much more aggressive game if the risk of losing your entire fleet on one bad round of dice was limited.

Does anyone have any experience with this? How did you do it? What did you do with transports? etc.

That’s an interesting way of doing it! Any major downstream impacts or game unbalancing that comes up?

    • RE: Seeking House Rules experience

CWO - Agreed but for as many factors and technologies for finding enemy fleets there are as many for avoiding or missing enemy fleets as well. Planes couldn’t spot at night, bad weather created a literal fog of battle, and radar works both ways (if I don’t want to engage you in battle I can use my radar to detect you and avoid).
You are correct that sea battles occurred in defined areas close to land. A lot of times an invasion force would instigate the battle. But if the player wishes to simply pass through a sea zone that contains an enemy unit I think in reality that would be an option. I just find the strategy of using destroyers as shields kind of gamey and fighting to the death as a defender absolutely silly.

    • Seeking House Rules experience

      Hi,
Was wondering if anyone on here had ever experimented in 1940 with house rules that allow defenders to retreat or “fog of war” in naval battles?

      Defenders allowed to retreat:
I’m focusing on naval battles in particular as it is totally unhistorical and not logical to force a naval presence to fight to the death but I’d be interested in hearing about land based rules as well. Something along the lines of the defender has the right but not the obligation to retreat all units after each round of battle to 1 adjacent territory as long as it is unoccupied or occupied with friendly units.

      Fog of War:
Sea zones represent hundreds/thousands of square miles on the map. The likelihood of enemy fleets finding or running into one another is relatively slim. Has anyone tried making a naval battle dependent on a dice roll? Something like the battle will only occur if a die roll of 1, 2, or 3 is rolled, if a 4 or greater is rolled the enemy fleets share the sea zone until the next players turn. If the next player wishes to engage in the naval battle they roll the die again to see if it happens.  If they do not wish to trigger a battle they are allowed to move there unit(s) from that sea zone.

I’m interested to hear any experience playing with similar rules and what downstream implications these created.

    • I love G40

Haven’t tried the 1939 map yet but the G1940 is one heck of a game. I got smoked by a buddy this weekend, he had a heck of a dice run.
Just wondering…is anyone in or near the Raleigh NC area and looking for a game? I’ve got plenty of room and cold beer, would love to start building a network of local A&A players.

    • RE: Global 39 7.1v

      Hi All,
Really hoping someone can help me out.
If I purchase the map from HBG here: ‘historicalboardgaming.c0m/Global-War-1939_c_170.html’
Am I getting the most up to date map/board?

I own both Pac and Eur 1940  edition 2 games, what do I need in addition to the pieces from those games to play the 1939 game?
If anyone could put together a list or direct me to an existing list that’d be wonderful!

Thanks in advance for the help/guidance!

    • RE: What's the cheesiest thing about Global 1940?

Yes the IPC income for land territories is head scratching.
I guess Okinowa was of symbolic importance to Japan? No idea why that’s worth 1.
They’d make things alot easier by multiplying everything by 10. It woulder offer alot more flexibility with land values, unit costs, NO incomes, etc…
