    • RE: Best UK defense for Sealion 3 or 4 collaboration

      @jim010:

I ran the odds of Germany doing Sealion on turn 2 in this case, and its 98% success with 9 units left over on average.

Assuming the TT in sz106 survives (and it will 2/3 games with this opening, add 1 inf, 1 tank, but odds only drop to 91%

      Need  more inf on London.

Where are your odds coming from?

Okay, look at the map to see what I did. I had it all typed out, but the computer crashed…

NOTE: Germany COULD pull off a G2 Sealion in this scenario. She will loose a good portion of her planes, though, and Great Britain is in position to retake it. In addition, it adds the United States into the war right then and there. A turn 2 sealion is basically out of the question.

This is also assuming the worst case scenario: SZ106 lost.

This battle is a huge disappointment to me. It’s just a roll of die at the beginning of the game to determine what level of difficulty Great Britain will be facing, seperated into 3 different sections:

Scenario #1(EASY MODE): Destroyer kills Sub. Destroyer can be used as a blocker wherever needed, and is a huge asset. The Canadian troops get through to London and Great Britain also collects her 5 IPC bonus.

Scenario #2(MEDIUM MODE): Sub kills Destroyer kills Sub. Same as EASY MODE, but no destroyer.

Scenario #3(HARD MODE): Sub kills Destroyer. Transport is killed, no troops go to London, Great Britain looses her 5 IPC bonus, and also looses 2 IPC to convoy damage.

That’s an 15 IPC difference that Great Britain has for a Sealion defence, not including the loss of units. 8 IPC for the Canadian troops that will now have to be bought for defense, rather than saved up for other purposes. 2 IPC for convoy damage. 5 IPC for IPC bonus. Then you factor in the cost of units. Destroyer + Transport = -15 IPC. Destroyer - Submarine = -1 IPC. Nothing - Submarine = +6 IPC

That’s a total of 30 IPC difference between EASY MODE and HARD MODE. There’s a 33% chance for all three modes. Equal odds. This battle is retarded.

Now that I’m done ranting about the single thing in this game that royally pisses me off… I mean, put the transport into a different seazone, or move the convoy to a different spot. Put an airbase down with a fighter… I don’t know, but this is broken. Okay… whew. Done. On to talk about strategy again.

I just typed out the rest, than this gay computer shut down. Arrgh.

Oh, and it’s a purchase of 6 infantry, not just 4, obviously.

Let me step in here and propose a different strategy than what is being proposed. While you are looking at your current defend London strategy, I’ll be looking at a defend SZ110 strategy while blocking SZ111. Taking your opening that you’ve agreed on, I’ll continue from there. I’ve taken the results from the Anchovy vs. Brado scenario for Germany’s moves.

      Great Britain:

      Buy
      4 inf (12)
      1 fig (10)

      CM:
      1 DD SZ109 to SZ110
      1 fig Sco to SZ110
      2 fig Lon to SZ110
      1 fig Gib to SZ110
      1 inf Lon to Hol

      Combat:
      SZ110
      att 1 DD 4 fig
      DiceRolls: 4@3 1@2; Total Hits: 24@3: (3, 6, 3, 5)1@2: (6)
      def 2 SS
      DiceRolls: 2@1; Total Hits: 12@1: (3, 1)

    • RE: The Defense Of Britain

What’s stopping Great Britain from building 2 carriers on turn 2? Coupled with the Mediterranean carrier, that makes a total of 3 carriers, 2 cruisers, a few destroyers, 7 fighters and 2 tactical bombers for the Germans to try blast through. There’s no way they can do that. The odds are against them, every time.

    • RE: What IF canada stayed out of the war(IF)

Oh boy. I missed out on THIS?

Sorry, guys, it’s my duty as a Canadian to post in here  :-D

Canada’s economy aside, as she would have supported the British regardless of her official political and military stance in the war, there are other things to consider.

The Canadian military was the only military worth noting that could have interfered with a German invasion. Nearly the entire British army’s heavy equipment was left at Dunkirk, and her factories were at the point of collapse from the amount of bombings the Germans employed against them.

That is where we should discuss some more, the Battle of Britain. Canada is where a huge percentage of pilots from across the Commonwealth were trained. I believe the number is as high as 90% of the pilots that fought over Britain were trained in the Canadian wilderness.

In addition, the Canadian aviation projects that occurred between 1939 through 1942, when America’s input was seriously felt, was what kept the Allied air fleets in the skies to defend Britain in the first place.

Everyone knows air superiority is what wins a war.

      @Cmdr:

I use 2 submarines in each SZ 111 and SZ 110 and 1 submarine in SZ 106.

I noticed that :) It was in your opening moves in the example I used, I assumed it was your standard opening.

    • RE: How is the balance with the new Alpha 2 changes? Please give your view.

      @Cmdr:

      SZ 106: Submarine
      SZ 91: 2 Submarines
SZ 111: A bunch of planes, some submarines
SZ 112: warships and a plane
SZ 110: A bunch of planes, some submarines.

For the record:  I use no planes in France, only ground units.  When I am done with England, there is no fleet left in the Atlantic with the possible exception of SZ 106.

You say here you hit SZ91, SZ106, SZ111 and SZ110 with submarines. Yet you only have 5 subs. That means only one of those locations gets 2 subs, the rest only get 1. Since you’re hitting SZ91 with only subs, then that must be where 2 subs are going, and in that case there are no subs that are in reach of SZ110. Your numbers don’t add up.

Looking at your most recent game against Krychek, using low luck I might add, you didn’t hit 91, so we’ll go with what you have there. What’s keeping me from building a tactical bomber and 4 infantry, saving 5 IPC? Moving my units from Canada to London, I can attack SZ110 with my DD and fighters, moving 1 infantry from London to Holland with fighter support and the infantry from Normandy. Those air units in Germany can no longer attack London. The destroyer in SZ110 keeps bombardment from happening. I can place my Mediterranean fleet off of Gibraltar, fly my airforce to London and collect my money, bringing me to a total of 48 IPC…. which is just enough for 2 carriers and 2 destroyers.

The fact that I have 6 fighters and a tactical sitting on London at the same time? Crazy stuff. On my 2nd turn, I shift my Gibraltar fleet up into SZ110, place my 2 carriers and 2 destroyers down while my planes from London land and I have a navy to counter yours.

      RE:
      3 CV @ 2
      3 DD @ 2
      2 CA @ 3
      2 TAC @ 3
      7 FIG @ 4
      TOTAL: 6@2 4@3 7@4
      8.666 hits

You can attack me with everything for:
      TOTAL: 6@3 7@4
      7.666 hits

I get 1 extra hit, but you can absorb double hit with attacking carrier and an extra hit with an attacking battleship.
I can absorb 3 hits with my 3 carriers. After that, I’m losing hitters at 2 to your hitters at 3. I will win this battle, hands down.

      OPERATION SEALION: HALTED

Take your 68 IPC and blow it on a navy. I have to buy a bunch of destroyers. After that, the Americans have intervened. Oh wait, you’ve already spent your 68 IPC before I made my navy!

You sink the entire Royal Navy fleet? In Alpha +2? That’s pushing it. What do you hit everything with? There are 6 different starting locations for the British fleet. You only have so many planes and subs…

Ummm… a good British player won’t let Germany take her before G4 or G5 anyways… and then America is there, or Russia is too huge. How can Germany conduct a Sealion when she has to deal with the Royal Navy?

    • RE: How is the balance with the new Alpha 2 changes? Please give your view.

Alpha 2 is fairly balanced. I feel that perhaps Italy should start with a few more ground units in Europe that may be used against Russia. Other than that, it seems to be fine.

You simply need to wait for new strategies to come out. In most games, Germany goes for a Sealion, or at least prepares for one. An all out attack on Russia is a far better strategy. Indeed, a good British player can even stop an attempted Sealion with a naval build. Yes, you read that right - a naval build. I hate it when British players buy stacks of infantry. They’re useless. They sit in London and do nothing. Build a navy to defeat the Germans.

If America commits entirely to Japan, Japan will fall. That’s the way it should be. There is too much going against Japan in that scenario for any balancing act to change. The problem with that is that Germany will win the game by herself. If she hits Moscow, and she will if America does not step in, then it is game over.

America has to be balanced. The fact that Cmdr Jennifer thinks that a KJF strat, even the northern route that doesn’t use transports, will work is pretty preposterous. Granted, I do agree that hers is the better version of most KJF strats I’ve seen and used, but you must build in the Atlantic too, or you’ve lost to Germany and Italy.

In response to the OP, Alpha 2 is balanced, with a few minor tweaks necessary. Particularly the Mediterranean and Japan’s income.

Always remember that making Japan a viable economic threat to the Western powers is a top priority. Positioning your fleet to slam the United States fleet may seem like a good idea, but it is a top priority to take the money islands by J3, J4 at the absolute latest. If that hasn’t happened, you’ve probably lost.

blocking the axis from the DEI doesn’t really work. All it takes is for Japanese transports to be located off of Siam for them to be able to take Sum, Jav & Bor, althought I suppose you could defend Cel from an attack, but a Japanese fleet based between Car and Sia and even Kia if you are properly positioned will require too many allied ships to defend.
