      http://www.history.com/news/5-things-you-may-not-know-about-lincoln-slavery-and-emancipation?cmpid=INT_Outbrain_HITH_HIS&obref=obnetwork

      See #1.

      Sure, the central issue of the war was slavery, I never said I was one of those “state’s rights” delusionists. And yes, slavery was horrible.

      But we have the benefit of hindsight and modern perspective. Then, it was not only accepted and normal, it was the central pillar of the South’s economy.

      And don’t even get me started on Lincoln. He’s been mythologized into some sort of proto-MLK. He wasn’t. He was a racist who used the Emancipation Proclamation as a political tool to cause unrest in areas where he didn’t even have jurisdiction, all while leaving slavery fully intact in areas where he did.

      Anyway, I agree with DarthShizNit that this thread has gone a little off topic, mostly due to my ranting. I apologize.

      I’ll Stop, after this post.
      Point number 1 is above all, a Symantec
      Number 2 could as well be attributed to political lies
      Number 4. Really? You mean the 13th amendment was simply passed without his say?
      All that being said. Who cares about proto-MLK? He is a great president because he believed in unity, and carried the nation through our darkest hour. In any case Jefferson, Jackson, Washington, and Roosevelt #1 were all twice the president he was. Most of the others genuinely sucked. Sorry, Your playtest looks like its going well. Thank you for sharing!

      Since you fight an Ideology, perhaps a Flashman style public opinion counter should be central to victory.

      *Country with slavery as a founding goal
      Sure it was states rights, but states rights to what? Is it supposed to be a coincidence that y’all seceded after Lincoln (avowed abolitionist) was sworn in. C’mon, Slavery was central to the CSA

      A country isn’t a country if it can’t get international recognition
      As for a Government, even Libya had a government that was pretty functional DURING the revolution.

      History is written by the victors.

      It’s the same reason we have tanks named after that btd Sherman and his army of rapists.

      You’re just mad Sherman won  :wink:

      People from the Northern U.S. (Yankees) always ask me why people are still angry about the Civil War. “That was like 200 years ago, get over it!”
      I just ask them, “How would you feel if your country was invaded and occupied?”

      How dare the north win the war 148 years ago  :mrgreen: anyway I would say this whole conversation about good vs evil is off topic.

      It wasn’t a country. You are still as integral a part of America as anywhere. Your culture still lives. You don’t need a Country with a history of slavery to have a home. That’s the crap failed states are built on

      That is at best misleading and at worst, blatant lies. We did forcible boot 12 million Germans, but we were having our arm twisted by the Soviet Union. Politicians will say what they will, but allowing 1 million to die in the transfer was likely a savings in lives over going against the USSR

      @DarthShizNit:

      Not necissarily. Italy still has plenty of troops in the North to at least hold on for a turn and to feed into venice. On I1 just send the Rome Forces up to clear out Tuscany and boom! Line reopned in time before any germans get in the way.

      I see you’re point, but eventually continued assault may prove damaging, and even game changing to the weaker Italian force. Also, I think the setup has made it clear that if AH wants, they can obliterate Italy in two turns, and turn north to double team France. This tactic, I think will be very popular.
      Turn 1: Attack Venice with all available troops, and attack tuscany in whatever capacity possible. (Italy down 5 IPCs on your estimates)
      Turn 2: Attack Piedmont, preparing for a crushing blow to the French (Italy Now gets max. 8 IPCs per turn. Credible Danger? No.)

      US only had an roundel in 1918
      UK only had a roundel 1918
      AH never used a roundel
      Italy used a roundel first in 1922

      In a pre-airforce world, Flags make sense

      @Eggman:

      Hmmm well it doesn’t look too good for Italy then.  I suppose their next best hope is the new mechanic with territories being contested… so you dribble in just enough men that your northern border is always contested and the enemy can’t advance south.

      Amphibious attack in Tuscany (1 inf) knocks out reinforcement line. Game over in Italy

      @Chacmool:

      Counting the days till March 19th…

      That’s October 19th!

      All silliness aside, I still fail to see why a long-run strategy is not viable. Germany holds line in France, then expand rapidly east for INCOME. This should be enough to continue the war, with half of Russias IPCs. Austria pushes mainly in defense of the Ottomans, Pushing together for Suez, to knock out ANZAC. All the while, Ottomen push north, again to gain the income needed for a long war. While fighting the commonwealth, Austria slowly invades Italy. Greece, Albania, Serbia, and Romania Should be enough to be a long run contender on their part. Along with a weak Italy, Austria can hold the game for a while.
          Ottomen must push towards a capitol as well. Bombay represents the central goal of the Turks. Between split British forces, German and Austrian pressure in Africa (little, but enough to suck up resources), and Austrian support, Ottomen should be able to take Bombay, effectively ending the war in the South.
          Germany has thus far held or even lost it in measured amounts. However, Italy can now do little to help France against the Hammer-Anvil Strategy, and Paris will be lost
      They say you only need 2 capitols to win, but you need three. Bombay is imperative.

    • RE: Does Italy stand a Chance?

      This is fun to think about. So many options…
      I love playing doomed powers, so the Ottomans and Italians should be interesting. As the British charge Constantinople, can the Ottomen hold out? Can Austria hold the back. Will Russia bite from the North. Defense is advantaged, so maybe…

      As the Austrians consider the eminent fall of their Middle Eastern Ally, do they dare charge Italy, burning resources all the while? Do they hold ground even against the Brits of Greece? The Ukrainians?

      As Italy sees eminent doom, do they fight for the balkans, in a Offence-is-the-best-defence move? Or do they rush to support the only thing that truly matters: Paris? Or do they assist the British in fighting of the Turks?

      It all comes down to Southern Europe, assuming the west is stagnant. So giddy! Why does Amazon have no preorder?

    • RE: Alpine Front Strategy

      A heavy naval build may yet reward London-Rome, defending against which would then put France in a very tough position. Austria knocks out Rome by sea, then Germany hits the beachheads hard. I think it could be done if one could pressure Britain in Africa as well.

      I know Seelöwe never works, but maybe… The German starting units alone may hold the line on the ground

      The Ottomans are my main selling point. The game comes with a minicouch. Oh wait…
      Seriously though, new battlefield, new theater, Africa could be important! Also, turquoise is awesome, no matter what Flashman says. Close second with Austria, as I think the showdown in the Balkans will be truly amazing. Love the one round of combat per turn rule. Every inch  must be payed in blood. Needless to say, I’m pumped
