How does Dave do it? Didn’t you say he likes to build a factory in Norway? He must pass the gauntlet.

You should have seen me at Grasshoppers place playing Deluxe. I counted and recounted every air that could hit my fleet. It was huge. More money is infused into the game. I think I was getting around a 100 per turn as America. And Ger never took the shot because he knew he would have been toast. And he did have 18ish air that could hit me. Fun game the second and third day. The first day was so discouraging–it felt like June 1940. Great game.

My point in showing the statistics since the beginning of G40 is to show

      1. Dwindling marginal returns no matter what game it is
      2. BM breathing a lot of new life into G40 as a whole
      3. PTV doing similar after BM had been out awhile.

My view is this is what happens when the world does not receive a new global Axis and Allies game in 13 years ( a child’s entire lifetime LOL). After a few years, the masses crave a new and improved, and a few years after that, the throngs cry out for a different way of taking over the world.

There are things about World War 2 that will continually draw young people in. And the views on certain YouTube channels are very encouraging. My hope is to have a channel that is a bridge between the steam 42 and reprint board game communities. And obviously somehow luring them into global oob here.

That would be more like the miracle of Jehosophat, who put the singers in the front line and “who praised the beauty of holiness, instead of shouting out a battle cry.”

What is the possibility of including the G40 2se, Gencon 42 set up and tournament rules in the league? It would be great if an A&A.org player took it down next summer.

      Taamvan,

Great job. Excellent, exhaustive. Tremendous accomplishment. Succinct! May I read this on my YouTube channel? This should be a sticky thing.

Now, on to advancing the football. The next step might be to make up a book that could be sold at HBG or a kindle edition or self publish. I’m not kidding. This has been a goal of mine, but I haven’t been able to get to it. In my experience there are many one hit wonders. People who played once and said, “This game is not for me.” Some of it is probably because of imbalance. Some of it is because of being overwhelmed. I was recently overwhelmed by the rules to 7 Wonders. It reminded me of my first time playing AnA. If we could hand them a book like this one, preferably with illustrations, they will see the panoply of options and execute one, have fun in getting it done (even if they lose) and say to themselves, “I want to come back and try that Berlin Bank job out.”

Taamvan, if you can do this, that would be great. Say it here. Claim the “rights”. If you can’t, can someone out there with lot of time on their hands, get this done. I was going to set up a Patreon account and ask for a 5 or 10 or 20 dollar donation. Even more if you produce something special.

In talking with Tristan, Larry and Tom and Levi, I’ve concluded that the audience for such materials or my videos or even posts on this site are not the pros. It’s for the people who are being beat by the pros. It’s for the beginners and the middle tier that could benefit and be encouraged to not shelve this game, but try something new.

I would include in such a book an explanation of bidding and handicapping. I have a video where I discuss this (Ivans or Jerries, depending on which side needs handicapping) This is a very practical suggestion and should not be ignored.

Perhaps you could also address the difference between a one day tabletop event and an online play it out to the end game. The tabletop discussion should include some house ruled victory conditions. What think you? Here’s to playing Axis and Allies for the next 50 years!

@crockett36 I’ve thought about this thread a lot in the last two months. I had never really conceived of the notion of the difference between 99.99 and 99.999. Still blows my mind. Life doesn’t seem to present many circumstances that are that sure. And of course most action underdog movies are about how that goes badly.

Andrew also has more specific advice for the Allies in several posts: a thread about Anzac figs on US carriers, How to Stop Japan and Help, I’m the Allies. Those are not the exact titles, but close.

Regarding subs, I was thinking about using them as cannon fodder for my other ships/aircraft. This a good idea or not?

Let me contradict champions at my own peril. I am probably wrong. However, every sub on the board has to be answered by a destroyer IF you do not bunch your subs with the fleet. On the other hand, if you leave them in the fleet AND do not take them first AND they take their destroyers first, every hit has to be put on a ship. At some point you could even submerge and wait to combine with your reserve fleet for a devastating attack on the ships. I call this destroyer wars.

If the margins are right, you can take your own fleet off the map and keep the subs. This is better done as the attacker. And the point in the Pac is to put down the Japanese fleet, not the air force. The point is to make Japan spend money on ships, ships, ships early, early, early. And to threaten Japan with being convoyed to death. That allows for skirmishing because you can’t remove five subs without 5 destroyers. And of course, Japan cannot keep up with the US and Anzac spamming subs AND take over India AND China and beat back the Russians in Manchuria. That’s why KJF is the most effective strategy in G40 se.

    • RE: Anzac Shuck Into Europe

@FranceNeedsMorePower I am no expert player, but have watched and studied expert play. A lot of people use 54 as an anchor and a fortress to project power over the money, islands and threatened to recapture them or to capture Caroline, which is very powerful and threatened both the main lands, China and the money islands. Anzac purchases can tip the scales in the allied favor inship versus ship,

The problem of course is this is a defensive action and only counts mathematically for defense. I also find 54 to be too accommodating to a Japanese expansion. It fights the fight exactly where Japan wants to fight the fight, endangering in India and Queensland, and protecting the Philippines further in the war the fleets can move between Queensland and Caroline versus the axis ships moving between Malaya and Philippines, so nothing happens, except Japan, live votes more and more of its aircraft to the new carriers that are being brought on board to keep up with the arms race. Those are solid strategies and not to be disparaged however, they do not advance the football because of the political rules America gets into the game too late and so this trench warfare develops without advantage to the Allied player Andrew AA gamer does this extremely well and you should study his Japan movements. What is a historical about this is that the allied purpose was to avoid trench warfare or stalemate.

What I like to do is have a main battle fleet and then side fleet that makes the Japanese also divide their fleets. I think a fleet should always be endangering the mainland with the transport. See how many games the Japanese are able to hold the mainland with just a handful of infantry and three anti-aircraft. It’s disgusting and obviously bad strategy also the waters of Japan and the waters of the money islands should always be convoy ABLE. In other words subs that could slip into a convoy anytime they are left without a destroyer you ought to have more submarines on the board than his destroyers that is a job for Anzac. I also think you ought to try and have US carriers that have room on their decks for Anzac fighters because that can increase the range of attack from 4 to 7 because the carrier can move three and the fighter can move for the other the other great use of the Anzacs is to block with Anzac destroyers. On account of the need for offensive coordinated action the Anzacs also are the ones that should be taking over islands with transport and ground units so that if the Americans want to attack together, they can so I see Anzac as crucial in capturing islands, providing blockers, convoying seasons, and I have a hard time seeing diverting energy to the Atlantic. I think you are throwing away a huge advantage of having four different, perhaps five different nations, taking down the Japanese.

@SS-GEN why would you do that, I wonder? as i understand things, the german tanks in 1940 were glorified armoured vehicles that were not nearly as good as the russian t34s, which (according to vdh) were based on some designs by GS Patton. if anything russian should get a '“tiger”.

I’m playing global 40 house rules right now, oztea’s optional tech pkg. it favors the axis in my opinion but has the give it because they got it idea.

    • RE: Opinions of Bad Guy plans for new game

Can you guys post one of these games with the large battles in Moscow? I don’t turtle so big battles are a lot less than all that. I have played around 10 games here, but many times that in real time. These are straight up G40.2 games?

I Like to call g40.2 the Axis’ wet dream. My guess is that there was a huge community push to make Sealion playable. That means stretch out the Atlantic and Pacific to slow down the juggernaut. The only solution I see to saving Moscow is to spam American bombers to Moscow. And get the fighters headed there too.

It irks me that Germany can muster more men than Russia. I want to see Russian hordes. Anyone house rule that? A gun for every other man? Men worth 2? Defend at one?

It would be much better if the Russians could destroy or dismantle their factories and move them East.

In one game, Majikforce was foxy and retreated out of Moscow. He lived to fight another day.

    • RE: big tech

I envision a future axis and allies roll out as mods or packs like Magic or DnD. So the 42 map and rules are the base set. Then you have your mod map that is bigger and biggest. Then you have mod for the set ups 39, 40, 41. Then you have a mod for the battle for the skies (SBRs), battle for the atlantic (sub v destroyer), battle for the oil fields (house rules that play with movement restrictions based on oil supply), and a mod for the technology race. Put them all together or play them in parts or keep it simple. I would throw in there differing victory condition mods and youtuber house rules edition.

War room isn’t a new game to me. I’ve also house ruled a game of ana with fog of war years ago. A year ago I played with multinational forces. Some of the components will fit into ana seamlessly. Much Ado about nothing. Others like limited with ana or unlimited orders with war Room will create a third or fourth thing. I, for one, will enjoy taking them out for a spin.
