@taamvan it is ridiculous how easy it is for Japan to kill China and how worth it to do it.

But to your point, we have all of these complicated efforts to add to our game variety flavor historical elements. All good! But the most elegant solutions is always the simplest: adjust or eliminate Allied political handcuffs. Good topic. I would do it incrementally to analyze the effects. I would start with Russia.

    • RE: Grand Plans, 3rd Edition?

Do you all think the splintering of the community is a problem? Some of it is natural, boredom, something new. Some is hopelessness caused by imbalance. And there is no house rule that will ever gain the acceptance of the community like a LH sanctioned version.

I would want him to give us a handicapping system built into every new release, like all of those optional rules in the back of revised. The benefit would not only be to scale the community and create competition where there is a great disparity of skill and experience, but it would automatically account for unanticipated imbalances in the product.

Myself, I don’t like the bid. I like the idea of Russian infantry as the equalizer. The best part about using ivans is that they can be used in almost all of the iterations of our beloved franchise.

I’ve also mentioned on my YouTube channel a way to customize the game by recreating the phony war period. If g40 begins in May 1940, what about starting 6 months earlier, giving many of the participants a non-combat move and an extra build. This what I call owning the game.

I also would like it if WoC would transition from the outdated idea of a single big get when you buy the game to putting out mods, packs, maps, sculps (like French) etc so that the buying public can get the official LH version if they so desire. Which is exactly how they make so much off of magic and dnd? Nickels and dimes.

    • Advice to Renegade! What is on your top 10 for adjustments to G40 3rd edition?

      Mine would be:

      1. Optional rules! Lot’s of them.
      2. player modified set up. X number of units to place secretly after set up.
      3. Handicapping system for perceived/real imbalance. (Known as bidding but make the commodity infantry Russian or German. To be placed in capitol.
      4. Boost US income by 5 to 10.
      5. Put in rails.
      6. Give Russia a factory in Novosbirsk.
      7. Give Russia a territory worth 3.
      8. Knock the bonuses down to 3 generally or make the bonuses a free infantry, representing recruitment enthusiasm.
      9. Put an air base in Gibraltar and Malta, Berlin, N Italy, Canada.
      10. Contested territories. One round of combat.

    • RE: We need an allied playbook.

If Sealion or a G1 Dow, the Soviets have to react accordingly. Sealion is an opportunity to expand. I would recommend declaring war on Japan and sending everything mobile India’s way via the China or the Middle East. The northeast force should be withdrawn from the coast until the fleet and air force are out of position. At that, point surge back and capture Man and Kor. This is also a psychological message that says to Ger, don’t do Sealion. Your ally will pay. Mass your infantry in Bes and Fin in order to surge into the Balkans and Scandinavia. Poland is a loser because it is too close to the factory. Russia will quickly gain enormous wealth from the spread of communism.

G1 Dow is the worst and most intense. Options are limited. Outside help or a fighting retreat is your only option. Hope for a wide front. This is ambitious and was a military error on the Hman’s part. Usually this strategy will leave you an opportunity for a counter attack. Always attack the tanks or planes. Take the fifty-fifty attacks. Even the 45% ones. See how the battle is going. You don’t have to redo little big horn. Strike and fade (retreat).

If ger is doing a bowling ball, you just have to fall back and cry for a second front or air support, like it happened btw. You may have to retreat out of Moscow. The determining factor is how many rounds of combat can you last. If you can make it go 4 rounds you will likely get into his planes and tanks. Any less and those tanks and planes will gobble up territory too fast for the Allies to counter.

      Russia done!

@vodot said in Renegade Con Virtual: Axis and Allies:

This post got moved over from a different thread.

@imperious-leader I’m not sure to what extent the team will feel empowered - or have the appetite - to revise things like rules etc. for the flagship games. They seem, at least right now, content to simply own and reprint the flagship IP while releasing only new entries into the (quite dated) family of “standalone satellite games”. This is after all the age of the timid ‘remake’, for better or for worse.

I would personally hope that we will see an even more revolutionary version of what @Black_Elk has recommended:

@black_elk said in Advice to Renegade! What is on your top 10 for adjustments to G40 3rd edition?:

So the Q was for Global 3rd Ed, but while we’re at it… I just got 3 to add

      1. A legacy version of the base game (midscale board), that is simply called “Axis and Allies” ie don’t include a start date year or an edition number in the name for that one. It should present as the basic starter set. Provide unit set ups for a couple dates like AA50 did, but do that in the manual instead. The idea being that it’s easier to re-print or revise or download material for unit set ups in a manual than on cards/boxes. So you could do 1942 as the default, but also 1941 or 1943 say, just by referencing a page in the rulebook.

      2. Axis and Allies Global - Sell it as a single complete game, rather than 2 separate theater games. For packaging maybe have 1 box be for the maps the cards and all the paper stuff, and then have units sold separately? I think the players that are most interested in the more advanced game just want G40, rather than Europe and Pacific 1940. By selling the sculpts separately there is less need to divide the boards by theater, and then it can build on the starter unit set included with the base “Axis and Allies” game mentioned above.

      3. Include a small Art book/History of the Axis and Allies game and it’s creator, including the images from all the cover boxes and such. Legacy style! I just think that would be a nice touch and cool to see.

I would take this idea even further - a complete restructuring of the product line into a modern “base game + expansions” system with a basic tier (“Axis and Allies”) and then more complex and theater games layered on top of that. How many olive drab colored US bits does one A&A player need?? I have thousands of plastic bits across dozens of different color variations and decades of different injection molders, and tooling changes both major and minor… and I am by no means a “major collector” by the standards of some of the regulars here.

Instead, in 2024 maybe we could begin a new three-tier system, something like:

      • “Axis and Allies” (essentially, this would be AA41 or, even better, AAZ without zombies)
        • basic units (inf/art/tnk/ftr/bmr/sub/trn/dd/cv/bb)
        • simplified board with drawn-on infrastructure
      • Expansion 1: “Advanced” Axis and Allies
        • this expansion would, when combined with “Axis and Allies” above, create AA50 or AA50+. Contents:
          • bigger/more granular map; maybe add a minor power or two (Axis minors/Italy, etc.)
          • Set of new ‘basic’ units for the added power(s) only
          • New unit rules + sculpts: Cruisers, AAA units, ICs, etc. for all powers
          • This would not come with the basic pieces for the other powers
      • Expansion 2: Axis and Allies: “Global War”
        • this expansion would, when combined with the Base game and Expansion 1 above, create G40 or G40+. Contents:
          • even bigger/more granular map and add more minor powers
          • Sets of ‘basic’ and ‘advanced’ units for the added minor powers only
          • New unit rules and sculpts: Mech Inf, Tac bombers, Minor ICs, Bases, etc. for all powers

These three would be the “mainline” series, which would then be further extensible by at least three additional series:

      1. A “Great Battles” product line that zooms in on battles of particular interest like Guadalcanal or the Bulge; or perhaps even whole theaters and regions like North Africa, the Eastern Front, or Operation Overlord and aftermath.
        - These would use but not contain the “Basic” units, rather expanding upon them by adding only the missing needed bits for those battles, scenarios, or theaters. The trucks from Bulge or the Blockhouses from D-Day are examples of these; and these theater games could include rules for incorporating these additional units into the “Global” game as well.

      2. A product line that adds rules, units, and complexity for the “Global” game. These would be “packs” of additional sculpts and units, with each including enough units to add a particular unit for every power or new rules for the Global game; adding things like Transport Planes, Heavy Tanks, Mobile Artillery, Oil/resource bits and rules, new maps and overlays, etc. This could even introduce goofy/fun shenanigans like a “Zombies” deck with zombie figures, or other bizarre and alternative scenarios.

      3. A product line for aesthetic game/sculpt changes - blister-packs releases of special/interesting replacement sculpts for the given powers.

Very good comment. As I said before, RENEGADE, look here! BE and I talked about this in another location. I would add, alternative set ups, even mid game set ups from top tier players actual games. And of course, official house rules like rails, marines, additional or reduced national objectives and national advantages.

I always find it fascinating how in a game that does involve luck in quite a substantial way, some players are still so consistently strong and come out top of the league year in year out.

      JWW used to say that.

Strategy/skill/experience/tactics, not blundering, and ability to adapt, like to bad dice, is much more influential than dice in G40 A&A. I think was true of AA50, too. Did I mention the psychological warfare, and imposition of will? Even speed of play can affect.

Consider - Every move in Monopoly except whether to get out of jail by paying money or using a card, is determined by dice or random cards. The entire path of your token for the entire game is pre-determined and you make decisions based on that. Yet with such a big role for dice, a better and more experienced player will rarely lose to an average or casual player.

In my review of one of these big games, the players avoided big battles and it was almost entirely posturing, logistics and economics. There were probably 3 or 4 big battles, almost all taking place in the first round with high precentage odds going in.

It’s like when a general retreats without firing a shot because his position is untenable.

    • RE: We need an allied playbook.

@Guam-Solo My preference is 110 because, in coordination with the British, you could land in Germany. I’m in a house rule game with Dessertfox. I had to abandon Paris and W.Germany because of his large transport navies and air forces. 110 makes it an existential war, knife to the throat. Do or die.

My purpose, though, is to be general enough to layout different plans of attack. Also, I will rarely ever do anything the same way twice. In addition, I will almost always have an experiment going on. Right now I’m playing Germany with only the original tanks. The extra money is going into an ever larger air corps. I’m also buying soldiers as Japan instead of tanks or mechs, the extra money going toward air and fleet maintenance. Just playing around.

@crockett36 Other sandbagging areas include Yunnan and by extension Bombay, Egypt, London, New South Wales, and Hawaii. These are all Axis targets, assuming one is playing with the OOB victory city conditions. Of these, Hawaii rests almost entirely in our hands. In the early game, it is easy enough to get three transport’s worth of troops to the island and a token destroyer blocker or two. If we were to see Calcutta or Sidney about to fall, prudence demands an entire build or two be put toward securing the waters around the island, complete with destroyer blockers. This is more effective than turtling there. One could assume that the bulk of the IJN would be in the Indian ocean. To get from there to Hawaii would take several turns. An air force and navy comparable to the enemy must be produced. Defensively, loaded carriers, battleships and destroyers are amazing. Offensively, a fleet of subs and bombers can do incredible damage on the cheap with versatility for later asymmetrical warfare Probably the most effective defense for the island proper would be a round of air power builds that could not be blocked from landing and be used for the offensive against the blockaders and the approaching fleet.
