jen: does this mean you have done an about face on subs? as I recall you roundly blasted them a short while ago.
I don’t mean to sound snippy but I am not confused as to how to use subs in this incarnation, I just don’t necessarily agree with all of the changes, which is what this thread is about :-P

panzer: my point was that I cannot take hits from air to my subs unless you bring a destroyer so if you attack my fleet without a destroyer it is actually to your advantage because all your hits must be taken on my airforce and capitol ships rather than taking them on my subs. I know that my subs get a “deadly” first shot (@1) without your DD but I hardly find that equitable, you sink my fleet (except subs) then move your DD over in non combat to neutralize them on my turn. I feel that as the controlling nation I should get to decide if they submerge. I am with Octo on this, I play the rules as stated and avoid house rules (excpet perhaps bids).
Perhaps I have not played enough games to see the air/sub balance.
I also find it odd that the U-Boat commander sits and watches transports unload troops onto his homeland rather than firing a torpedo at them

Yes, that is the reason I suggest a very high NO value(15) for Alaska, Hawaii, Wake, Midway. This makes America stay and fight.
Or give them 3 NO’s based upon island pairs and the “homeland” NO including Alaska. This keeps the big payoff from being all or nothing and allows for strategic island hopping from both powers (Japan’s NO cash should also be based away from the mainland primarily)

I think the suggestion of replacing the transport in W.USA with a cruiser might just do it, and at a net of $5! Coupled with my suggestion that the game starts with China then moves to the regular sequence (with China going after USA) Japan would then have to make hard choices from amongst their options.
The problem with adding US navy is many will simply send it through Panama (especiall if it is an offshore capable unit).
I like the Idea of split USA production ala Pacific (Auss/India) with an additional central cash pool that can be divied up as preferred for which ever strat the US player desires. This keeps USA in both theatres but allows individualized strats as well. I think the income would have to be higher though. -

what about subs not being able to stop defenseless transports? Or subs not being allowed to stay on the surface during a battle that does not include enemy destroyers?
I am not sure where you reading this from but I check the rules again for AA50 under submarine page 16 of 16, and the only thing it mentions in reference to defending submarines is that -if there is a attacking destroyer present they have to roll a defense roll and cannot use the submerge option instead. If there is no attacking destroyer then they can submerge instead of defending.
This is from the rule book: “If there is at least one attacking destroyer on the battle board, defending submarines will participate in combat during the defending units fire step of the General Combat sequence. Otherwise, each defending submarine may submerge or fire. Remove each submerging submarine from the battle board and place it on the gameboard in the contested sea zone. Roll one die for each remaining defending submarine.”
So I interpelate this as been subs can stay in a battle if they want, but they must stay if there is an enemy destroyer attacking. If you attack a sub without a destroyer then your ships must withstand a free sneak attack and remove any casulties before they get to fire. If they miss then the sub can now sneak attack again or submerge. Also remember planes canoot attack subs without a destroy to help and subs cannot attack planes so they hit only boats. If you attack my fleet with your air and you do not have a destroyer then my subs cannot soak any hits from your planes, my capital ships have to take it in the shorts. I disagree with this because if I order my subs to stay engaged on the surface and not submerge then they should be eligible for casualties from the planes.

oz– that is my general position on German factories as well

I2 flattop is awesome, even if only for the allied reaction
I did that yesterday and the med was completely ignored the rest of the game -

i don’t know about the BEST tech for Germany, but I just finished a game yesterday where I got that tech G2. Devastating! Japan was played by a rookie so had little pressure coming but Moscow still fell G4. Being able to build and move infantry with the armor to Moscow in two turns was a game breaker.

There is no benefit to taking these islands, either for japan or for the usa. The NOs should have skipped these and only dealt with the non-moneyed islands.
I couldn’t agree more

RE: Was this game play tested AT ALL?posted in 1941 Scenario
only if you want to see Japan roll over everything. The USA needs to engage and battle Japan in the Pacific or they just get to far out of hand. I do agree that NO’s need to be pacific focused (perhaps more lucrative for USA as well) and Japans NO needs to be Australia not India (which they would take anyway).
As far as your idea, I am not “shooting it down” so to speak, but how do you balance an extra $26 in allied units? Do you think no additional axis incentives are needed? -
RE: Was this game play tested AT ALL?posted in 1941 Scenario
@Flying:
My fix would be….
Put 2 extra chinese infantry with the flying tigers to help it survive 1st round.
Put extra US DD at Hawaii. This will make it a juicer target and you are going to have to throw more than 2 fighters and a DD at it to kill it.
Put extra Cruiser at WUSA. This deters any attack here if you want to kill the BB and beefs up the post PH attack American navy to a reasonable level.
American NOs changed to only 2…(France and home territory NO deleted)
Receive 15 ipcs if Allies control 3 of the four following territories…Hawaii, Alaska, Midway, Wake islandReceive 5 ipcs if allies control the Phillipines
so a bid of $26 for the USA/China?!? seems a bit extreme

RE: Anyone know a good KBF stratposted in 1941 Scenario
An effective KBF is, in reality a neuter Britain first. Starve them and regulate them to their island and then they become a non factor allowing you to take moscow or (more fun) D.C. almost at your leisure. Since there are more territories to dance around in Asia and North America. If you really want to take London out you have to 1-2 them with Italy/Germany (oer even 1-2-3 if Japan is over there). Japan shoud be hammering USA though for it to work.

I don’t think china going first will overpower the allies in asia, I will repost if I get to playtest this (anyone else try it already?)
cruisers are already a better buy than BB’s with the offshore and reduced cost (at least they are bought more frequently than BB’s in my playgroup) so giving them AA ability, while historical, will further reduce the impact of the “big 'uns”. perhaps the radar tech could then apply to cruisers,BB’s as well? hmmm, that sounds a bit too nasty maybe a 1 with radar? forces allies to research for that tech to protect the fleets from bomber abuse. what about each cruiser, battleship gets one shot at 1 at one plane?
sz 16 should have been standard
heavy bomber roll two and pick one fixes the problem, pretty much guaranteed hit or heavy SBR dmg without being silly.
sz 5 any allies, just like other canals seems reasonable, it still protects Berlin for a while, but forces Germany to protect NWE instead of deadzoning it
sz 12/13 perhaps it is blocked if you control both but open otherwise.this allows Italy to capture the rock I1 (or later) it they want and only face british air
just some random thoughts -

or start the game with China then go to Germany, etc finishing with USA then starting over with China again

RE: Subs defending transports?posted in 1941 Scenario
I still think it is lame that G can’t use the sub to soak a hit for their cruiser if they want to. The “auto submerge” takes player options away. Wasn’t it also true that allied air inflicted substantial casualites on u-boats?

RE: Victory Cities!posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
you should have to hold the VC’s for an enire round, that keeps axis from feeling cheated if USA suicides itself for that final VC. I also feel that losing your capitol should be bad but not as bad as it is in A&A (fork the cash). that makes VC strats less viable and capitol capture pretty much game ending. perhaps keep your money but no buy that round (can you even spend and place it all if you have no capitol?) or you get no combat move as you regroup. I am getting into house rules now and will stop.

RE: Question about AA gunsposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
free 1d6 dmg to each IC in range is pretty good if you ask me. japan and usa need to do some shuffling if they get this, but everyone else gets to start shooting right away

Nope, sorry. Planes can only hit subs if a friendly destroyer is present. In this case the sub can’t be hit, or fight back. That is what I said, I was just also voicing my disagreement with the rule. Many subs were sunk by air in the war I believe (experts chime in) and not being able to leave them on the surface to help out your navy (soak hits for warships) nerfs them even further I am going to suggest this as a house rule with my group since it might keep the baltic fleet alive until G2
