the island is a seperate space from the sea zone, if flying past it, don’t count the island but if attacking it then count it as another movement point (then one more to fly back to the surrounding sea zone).  i don’t have a map in front of me so i can’t tell you exact numbers of movement points other than western europe .

    • RE: What about a KBF strategy

i like the threat of a kbf from germany, changes their strategy if only slightly.  i think the real “kbf” is in the form of taking all their cash (africa, india, australia) and haveing them become a relative non-factor. this also can force the usa to spend time/resources recapturing british lands instead of moving on europe.

    • RE: Best National Advantages

the problem being the relative inexperience of my group means oob rules only, i have managed to get the sbr to the lhtr standard at least but we haven’t even gotten to NA’s with only one game every two weeks

    • RE: Best National Advantages

i was very dissapointed at the balance of power in the NA’s.  with a concensus that the allies have the advantage, why are the NA’s for them so clearly better than the axis, should have been the other way around.  but i think u-boat interdiction is cool if not game breaking.  i think maybe the idea behind the NA’s was to replace the bid.  experience being equal, let athe axis have one each.  new players on the allies? give them one.  tired of the same ole’ same ole’? everybody role or ahve allies get one, axis two each

    • RE: UK1 options when still controlling Egypt

what is the experience level of your group?

i only have a couple dozen games in but some of these guys have alot more

i did the german bb once and it was fun, i think if my opponents were better i would have been toasted, i have never seen egypt intact except once and it was ugly for the axis, uk became a monster.  i would probably move my fleet into the med to threaten his underbelly, especiall since you have troops you can transport.  try and land in north africa with the usa and get rid of his med fleet.  you are going to need fighters down there too.

then again, if you do that you may see stuka hell on your fleet so it could be a moot point

    • RE: Clarification on AA gun

i like aa guns tri, they add that element of uncertainty to air raids.  if you canned them  i would think you would have to scrap sbr’s as well.  the more variance you remove from the game the more predictable (boring) it becomes.  some guys become known as easy tagets to bomb and some become the city you do not mess with (“snake eyes AGAIN, that is just wrong”) i have seen the aa completely change games and seen it be a complete non-factor which imho i think is cool.

we , by the way, don’t specify the aa target so in a large battle the fighters get hit and on sbr why are you taking fighters? the escort rule?

    • RE: UK1 options when still controlling Egypt

that’s why there are victory cities, so you can’t just blow off india i always try to stay within the spirit of the game and hold india as long as feasable.  if you still have egypt you can bring the indian fleet into the med for sure, this makes life a bit more complex for germany and you don’t have to sacrifice india.  alternatively, if you want to try a different twist that extra dd might be of use to the indian fleet, even if the japs sink it then at least that means the usa fleet is intact (probably) and japan should have taken some serious losses (ac, 2 fig, 2 dd, 1 tp = 18 pts def = 3 hits avg)

    • RE: US tactics

what about two cv’s and 1 fighter; one each ocean then next turn hit algeria and buy two more trannies the rest subs, etc for the west coast.  it seems you wont be able to really move in the pacific until turn four like this and you would be pumping only 4 units a turn into north africa.  is it fast enough in the pacific and is it enough to help uk/russia contain and starve germany? doesn’t seem like on either question, but i am going to try it if i get to play usa again

    • RE: US tactics

if you are new and all of your opponents are new you will all have alot of fun making alot of mistakes together.

the next step i guess would be the KGF strategy where you bore your opponent into submission with massive non-stop troop transports into europe.  i call it boring because that is where i currently am an am haveing a hard time developing really effective statregies different for the allies and have been abel to disrupt it with the axis

      i also need spellcheck

    • RE: Stopping japan

i have thought about a us atlantic presence of 4 divisions per round to assist and the uk being european focused with russia, the problem always becomes how to tangle with japan as the usa without getting stuffed

last game i staged in novo, when the japs went north i smacked them then pulled back.  when they showed up in the center i smacked them again….and pulled back.  i think as russia you have to not get too excited about pushing back and continue to lobby your allies!

    • RE: Stopping japan

i think that we all know that approach switch, do you think that if you were getting 2 uk tanks and 4 us divisions coming through africa every turn that you would have been able to hold the line you established in asia or would it have been a futile waste of resources that japan would have overwhelmed anyway?

very true switch, you can lose your complex g1 if not careful but i don’t think it would be worth it to germany due to the amount of air he would lose.  i do like the idea of making the army in ukraine disappear but if you go 3 inf 3 armor you don’t have a lot of backup for r2 .

the thing i like about russia is they set the tone, the last game i played they went steady and challenged germany to devote themselves to me, giving the atlantic and africa to my team.  good thing they landed in europe because he was knocking on the caucasus heavy, i got in one good strafe and then uk landed up north drawing his fire.  after that is was the slow march to berlin.

    • RE: Stopping japan

we seem to be playing forum tag!

can the allies put enough force through africa to keep german cash lower and meet japan in persia?

this is what i am going to try if i ever get to run uk or usa again, we only play every 2 weeks and just finished a game with me as russia, gemany was timid and the game was decided turn one but uk just played around, building three fleets and stacks of fighters, bottom line; after ten hours and watching the brits steal all european cash out from under my nose i was able to take berlin after uk and i both hit it twice HARD.  i have changed my partners name to “the cat” because he continually played with his food.  if you are reading this you know who you are!  lol

once again, to stop japan you need to kill germany?

can germany be contained and japan pressured?

    • RE: What are some good Russian strategies?

i like to strafe ukraine, 3 inf, i art and three armor, if first round is good and german roll is weak, hit again if your infantry is toast pull back for next round.  it does leave them that extra fighter so it is a real tough call either way. i have tended to pull back rather than lose 3 tanks but i might try the other next time to see what kind of footing it leaves germany.  its just hard to sacrifice those tanks!

    • RE: Stopping japan

so from what i am reading the best way to stop japan is to go kgf?

everyone knows that is the “best” (easiest) strat for the allies.

kind of anti-climatic don’t you think?

my next game as uk or usa i will try SOMETHING different and let you know what happened, probably wont be too valid due to the relative inexperience of half of my group as it will be their 5th game but might give some new twist

    • RE: History for strategy?

good points both of you, personally i like the south african complex.  you get two tanks every turn that push germany out of africa then head to asia.  meanwhile uk can do its thing in the atlantic against germany with its fleet, not having to worry about their cash being snagged by germany in africa.  i was japan once when uk built an aussie complex and i just took it out as soon as i could (round three) but i am intrigued by it and used to build one as uk in classic often just to annoy japan a little

    • RE: What are some good Russian strategies?

if germany bought a baltic fleet (often the case) you can move into ukraine pretty thick if he went karelia, just be ready to pull back to west russia r3 if he responds the way he should with that big stack 2 spaces from berlin.  keep your supply lines short! if you get strung out your front force could be out of position to counter a surge from either axis.  you don’t have to take berlin, just keep him bottled up(with help hopefully) then hold japan off until uk/usa finish the job
