    • RE: KJF - Now what do I do???

if russia is sending troops east to help a kjf and are faceing germany alone what do you think the results are going to be? if russia sends 6 inf to bury the uk has to use theri fig on the kwang trannie and land in bury or else all those ruskies are dead j1 ( i would gladly skip pearl to do this as japan) i have seen the alaska complex and it can be ok but that $15 is a trannie with a dude and an art.  i like a north pacific approach by usa, it forces the japanese fleet north and if the brits survived then they might be able to harass some islands or sink frindo bound trannies.  if uk has a complex in south africa (i seem alone in this) then the units they produce both secure africa and pressure asia allowing the usa to spend elsewhere

precisely switch, i love the juneau sea zone :-)

i usually set up the 3x3 in the north and 2x2 in africa because it is easier to control africa than it is to maintain a foothold in europe sometime i stage in brazil 2x2x2 and go sub-sahara (cool movie) then if the germans lose their ability to threaten the sea zone off algeria, BOOM you have 12 units and six trannies, going immediately to a 3x3 into algeria that threatens rome

against sub par axis play only (imho) switch we all agree that india is toast j3 i am glad you listed it as ‘theoretical’ but i still think a kjf along the lines of the kbf(take their cash not their capital) could be done from south africa and the pacific, but you still MUST be putting usa and uk forces in europe or the game will be over so it is a slower approach for sure

      woodie,
how are you losing you 2nd jap BB? if you position yourself right on j1 then the solomon fleet is sunk j2 and with smart buying (imho) you are still putting grunts in asia(i.e. a complex j1) i know alot of people disagree with that preferring 3 trannies but with that IC on j1 then another later you can do things with your fleets you might not have been able to otherwise

that, tri is also what i feel is a fundemental flaw in the game.  there should be a viable KJF :x

i’m not saying he could ignore the fleet, but he should have SOME time before it gets there so his flow into asia might have been reduced but shouldn’t have been stopped.  japan has 2 BB, 2CV, DD, SS trannies and planes to start with, so steady sub buys and positioning of the fleet are factors, what were you and he buying? with the usa going 99% at japan europe should be secured fairly well by germany, as well as africa.

so you captured moscow and are stressing? if usa is really spending all their dime in pacific then you should be able to continue rolling through asia while maintaining your defensive stacks in europe.  focus on the russian pieces since he can’t build and have your buddy hunker down on his island.  i think your friend over reacted to the usa build up

i agree 100%! the chance factor of the dice is what makes the game funner than chess
our group hoots and hollers over them dice more than over winning!

i like the idea of building in the west as well, then if the opportunity arises to play in the pacific you got the boots right there!  but it does slow the move to europe looking over your shoulder at 4 trannies in sz60

so the “threat” of hitting canada/alaska slows usa shuck by one round, thats a pretty fair deal for japan

    • RE: US tactics

A Solomon strike simply does NOT pan out against a skilled Axis player.
(quote from switch) i guess i am technologically challenged as well :|
especially on usa1, japan crushes your fleet, with 2BB’s and mass air the “wash” isn’t, usa gets wiped and japan loses a trannie  :-P

is usa4 too slow? india usually falls j3 (unless it is abandoned on uk1) and j4 they are really ramping up in asia so taking some pressure from there is good, the crux of the biscuit is whether or not to loss of european pressure can be handled by uk/russia.  usa walks a very fine line if they go two front, but that is what i am determined to try next time i am usa (of course our games are for fun, not tourney)

    • RE: Low Luck

i like low luck in triplea when testing a strat to get an “average” outcome but the excitement of uncetainty in the wild random dice is more fun in an actual game.  i think of the odd results as the result of weather, espionage or whatnot

    • RE: US tactics

if japan knows what they are doing your usa fleet is usually scrap the round after taking one island, then they can recapture the island at their leisure and with smart purchasing they will not lose too much drive into asia.  i think it can be done by the usa but i feel you need your atlantic shuffle in place and the pacific drive would come around usa4-5.  your europ/africa support will be less but if it reduces japan’s asia push by more then you have a net gain.  if i pull usa next game i am trying it (i am getting VERY annoyed with work schedules, our game this weekend has been canceled  :x)

if things are going so well for germany they need an extra IC it is usually known as caucasus (or moscow)

    • RE: Opening w/japan…

the threat or possibility of a west coast/alaska landing can be useful in reducing the number of usa troops heading for europe, the downside is if you actually land in alaska or mexico to distract the usa then those units are not in asia (as well as any figs on the cv in you fleet) so is the net positive or negative? i like staging aroung NZ occasionally just to keep usa honest in western, but any invasion of the usa can only be done against either new or borderline incompetent play on the part of the usa.  that being said, i am devising a jap strat that consists of pressuring usa without sacrificing asia, but haven’t had the chance to try it out yet, maybe this weekend, our group has had a long hiatus and the withdrawls are indeed painful

    • RE: Goofy Russian Opener

i guess it depends on how quickly you can expect help from the uk (and usa) , i can see one fig and have been considering doing that next time i pull russia (work schedules SO get in the way of quality gaming time don’t they?) but two figs is a little to out there for me
