flush, i am not trying to be harsh, but if your group did not need to give the axis a significant boost in classic the level of play in your group is suspect.  look at the ‘games’ thread and see how a bid (free extra cash/units) of $20 for the axis is considered “light” how do you feel your old games would have gone (you as germany) if you started the game with an EXTRA $20 worth of units and $$?

and in revised, yes you can march to eastern euro and recapture not really slowing you down too much, but every unit the uk/usa kill is one less going into mother russia, as well as slowing your tanks down.  if you have to constantly recapture western how are those forces moving east?  i have seen the “space for rent” in western europe strat used (octo ) effectively but that was in a situation where (i think) germany was never meant to SERIOUSLY threaten russia, just hold on and wait for the nips

    • RE: KJF - Now what do I do???

if you go algeria usa 1 then the air in both western and lybia pound your 1dd 2 trannie fleet :-(

i often go brazil usa1 then sub-sahara usa2 with another link in the trannie fleet moving to brazil, then in usa3 you have (as i previously mentioned) a 2x2x2 movng 4 units into africa and as soon as algeria does open up (german forces going east) then you can move all 6 into it dropping off 12 units.  after a one round hiccup that those 12 units cover for you then have a 3x3 going into north africa.  how is this related to the topic again :?

anyway i think i can link it to a KJF this way; get the atlantic shuck in place with the northern fleet a 2x2 and the southern one 2x2x2 and you don’t need as many screening capital ships (do DD’s qualify as capital ships :|) and the rest can go pacific.  this is MUCH slower than a tradtional KGF obviously but if usa goes after japan too early they are just tossing boats to davey jones (imho)

    • RE: Stopping a shore bombardment of 5 BB's with one sub? Is it worthwhile?

as far as the retreat to a single territory octo, i see the supporting logic behind it.  it is kind of like a “rescue mission” for those trapped forces

    • RE: Germany Strategy concept…

yes, they would be nuisance raids but they get steadily larger each round and also cut off the flow of german troops that have to recapture the lost territories instead of marching glibly towards moscow.  you said you played classic mostly as germany, did your group need a bid to balance, and if so how large or what other balancing mechanism did you use?

thats what i figured, 2 trannies and an IC j1 is insane!

i don’t think it was cheesy, it was a tactical decision to try and break the blockade with u-boats.  nix could have simply moved his BB’s out and strafed the u-boat with planes then used the fleet to hit other locations not adjacent to IC’s in subsequent rounds.  and it DID cost switch $8 each turn.  i got the impression that nix was trying an experiment and i feel it was partially successful

did you see the quote where if we could convert ALL of the agricultural waste it would be 4 BILL BBL’s/year!

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

6 is such a sweet bid in the current tourney (only place half the bid in units) because you get a nazi for either europe or africa then 2 bucks to germany for the old 1AC, $26 in ground (insert your favorite combo here) then japan get 2 trannies AND an IC in j1.  i would think it would be hard to lose as the axis like this.

switch what would you do with your $4?

sim, it does stop all of the BB’s shots, they are involved in a naval battle so they cannot bombard.  same is true in egypt, your german BB CANNOT bombard due to the DD’s presence

From Turkey Guts to Fuel Oil
Posted by michael on Tue Apr 01, ‘03 04:42 PM
      from the every-part-except-the-gobble dept.
Untimely Ripp’d writes "The latest issue of Discover Magazine reports that any day now a plant will go online in Carthage, Missouri that processes turkey guts into high grade oil, natural gas, some minerals, and water. Unfortunately, the Discover article isn’t online yet, but here’s a newspaper article. The system, developed by Changing World Technologies uses thermal depolymerization and apparently works on almost any and every kind of organic waste. They assert that applying it to 100% of the US’ agricultural waste would produce about 4 billion barrels of oil per year – about the amount we currently import. It sounds too good to be true, it sounds like one of those fly-by-night-in-the-face-of-the-second-law deals, but it isn’t happening in somebody’s basement – it’s happening in a multi-million dollar facility developed with Con-Agra."

my only question is : why in the &U#@!!  is it taking so long?!?

this was a pressurized process (i think) that yielded a liquid product.  methane may have also been produced, i don’t remember it was a couple of years ago

if you don’t buy any german navy g1 then you are done in the baltic on uk1 unless the uk player is foolish.

after observing octo in action i have had to rethink some of my ideas about germany slightly (thanks :-)) that ac could be 4 inf and 1 art but i still stick to my basic ac + 8 inf in a no bid. the usa and uk then HAVE to ramp up their fleets with more defensive units than they would ideally like.  if you have no baltic fleet and the allies are not landing until the fifth round then that seems like a pretty strange scenario to me.

how do you like the changes done to revised and how long have you been playing the current edition?

      p.s. welcome  aboard

the other factor to consider is keeping a larger force from landing as well as controlling the losses of your own force in an easily planned for manner.  we had a throwdown last weekend where i hit 5 of 6 with defending  figs and BB for 3 rounds- ouch!

i read about a company that was useing chicken guts, is that bio-diesel? i agree it will take MANY small steps to move beyond the dependance on new sources of oil, but oil itself is such a fantastic gift to us that it is a shame how it is always getting picked on

go for the guts! (chicken that is)

    • RE: KJF - Now what do I do???

there is no denying that you can put early pressure on japan with the moves mentioned, but if it is so easy how come none of us see it? simple, against competent japanese play (and german) it doesn’t work.  germany is in moscow and all you have really taken from the axis is 9 ipc along the coast, at the cost of the 9 in africa going to germany as well as any russian territories they are gobbling along the way.  germany at $50? i’ve had 'em there (you guys probably have too) and it is worse than japan at $50 because it ALWAYS means no more russia

unless of course switch you are the many-tentacled one  but even then he got some fortunate results in the atlantic that defied expectations.  i think we all agree that if germany buys no baltic navy g1 then ORDINARILY is is sunk uk1 leaving a very lonely med fleet to watch the approaching merchant marine armada :-o

i would use the manchurian inf as well switch, i know it weakens the china push but it is worth it to snuf half a dozen soviet inf.  WITH the uk fighter things are VERY different, that is why i posted that the brits HAVE to send the fig to bury if russia stacks it r1

      fllush:
you are brave for your first post :-o
octo will back you in that line of thought though and he is an axis specialist after all :-)
i strongly support an AC for germany round 1 it gives you fighter flexibility and protects both berlin and eastern europe from uk landings as well as making normandy unattractive (for a while) also, the fun of making the “boy’s from brazil” a reality is sure fun
if you add another trannie g2 you are sending inf and art to karelia the round after buying as well as making uk keep more at home than they would like
