    • Need ideas for secret objectives

Over in the thread about if China should be allowed to leave its territories if it has them all, Jeff28 suggested that global could be made a lot better with secret objectives in the flavour of Twilight Imperium. For those unfamiliar with the game, each player would be dealt an objective card at the beginning of the game which no one else could read until that player fulfilled the objective and was then rewarded.

I think this is an absolutely brilliant idea and would like to call on the extensive knowledge of this forum to help me create a deck of 3 to 5 secret objectives for each of the major powers (Germany, Russia, Japan, UK, USA, Italy). I would like all the objectives to be historically flavoured, but other than that let your imaginations soar and thank you for the help!

      @ghr2:

      @creeping-deth87:

Wow, it seems like I’m alone in using this strategy based on the responses. I normally do all fleet on G1 and then pretty much go all tanks/mech after that. In my group Russia usually just cant take it and by the time the Allies show up it’s too late.

When do people normally attack Russia? I find waiting past turn 2 to be dangerous.

I find attacking any other time besides turn 3 dangerous.  Your stack turn 2 would be too vulnerable, and economically, turn 1 helps russia more than it hurts.  Turn 4 gives the allies too much time on japan or italy before you start threatening russia.  I like turn 3 cause I can have a powerful stack of inf/rtl/mech/tank plow through russia to moscow.  my turn 2 buy can be partially split to make a dd and a sub in order to stop the 125 NO and to kill any pesky subs.

I guess I just have a different meta in my group. Russia doesn’t have enough to counter-attack with on turn 2 usually. I normally grab Karelia, Vyborg, Baltic, Bessarabia, and East Poland and then it just goes from bad to worse for Russia from there.

It’s totally legal, and I actually do it all the time to follow up with a G2 Barbarossa. As mentioned it’s also helps out Italy which is a nice bonus.

    • RE: The Japan Playbook

Cow, would it be possible to not only attack the American ships in SZ35, but also SZ26? This would set the US Pacific Navy back huge, though admittedly you might also lose a number of Japanese ships in the attempt. Is it advisable or is the fleet needed elsewhere?

    • RE: Questions on how to play Japan

I’d prefer to try to win on the Pacific side instead of forgoing that theatre entirely and trying to help Germany and Italy. In my group, the UK/ANZAC player normally does NOT declare on turn 2, so I’m not sure how that affects some of the advice I’ve been given. The Allies usually wait for the US to come in before any aggression is taken on Japan.

Is 2 subs and 2 transports a decent buy for turn 1? I used to do 2 transports and a minor complex, but like I said originally, I’ve had great success convoying ANZAC and found that it completely shuts them down and prevents them from taking back the money islands in the south.

Question for the pros: do you take the money islands in the south all at once, or over a period of 2 or 3 turns? If all at once, do you assign ships to protect every transport in the 4 dfiferent sea zones? I find that if I spread out to take all 4 in one go and try to protect them all, it means I have to take most if not all of the starting navy to adequately defend all 4 sea zones, and then I get locked south away from Japan by intervening blockers. I’m now considering escorting the transports with most of the navy until I grab the islands, and then going north with the warships to meet the US navy instead of babysitting the transports south.

Finally, I think I’d like to try for a Calcutta grab but I’m not 100% sure how to do so and may just be content to neutralize them economically. I know simply neutralizing them makes a Pacific win less likely, but in some situations I might be content simply drawing American IPCs away from the Europe board.

I appreciate the feedback so far, any additional help would be awesome.

    • Questions on how to play Japan

I have the most trouble playing as Japan so I figured I’d turn to this board for help. I usually set up for a 3rd turn money island grab and do my best to take and hold southeast Asia.

I’ve noticed in my few games as Japan that I seem to run into manpower shortages. Do most players build a minor complex or 2 on the mainland or do they rely on transports to funnel units from Japan itself?

I also find myself a little aimless once the money islands are mine. I’ve tried using subs to neutralize ANZAC and Calcutta’s income and I’ve had great success with that, but it’s also been difficult capturing either capital without risking a lot of aircraft and I’m more of a conservative player. Where should I go and what should be doing after the island grab in the south?

    • RE: Best moves for sinking UK fleet G1?

Thanks a lot for the responses guys. I just played a game and went for the 2 subs/battleship/3 fighters/3 tacs to 110 and 2 subs/fighter/tac/2 bombers to 111. Worked like a charm.

    • Best moves for sinking UK fleet G1?

My friends and I have been playing Alpha 3, not 3.9, and I’m considering moving on to the new version. I normally play as Germany and the rearrangement of naval units in the Atlantic really trips up the naval attacks I used to do in A3.

In particular, moving the UK and French cruisers from SZ112 into 110/111 seems to be a huge buff for Allied naval survival after G1. I wouldn’t mind this so much if the German cruiser stayed where it was, but being stuck in 114 with no naval base means there’s no way to get it into the action on the 1st turn.

In Alpha 3 my typical play was this:

      G1 purchase: 1 carrier, 2 transports

      to SZ112
      -SZ113: 1 battleship, 1 cruiser
      -Poland: 1 tac bomber
      -Slovakia: 1 fighter

      to SZ111
      -Norway: 1 fighter
      -Holland: 1 fighter
      -West Germany: 2 tac bombers
      -Germany: 1 strat bomber
      -SZ118: 1 sub
      -SZ124: 1 sub

      to SZ110
-West Germany: 2 fighters, 1 tac bomber
-Germany: 1 strat bomber, 1 tac bomber
      -SZ103: 1 sub
      -SZ108: 1 sub

      to SZ106
      -SZ117: 1 sub

This play doesn’t really work anymore, since I can no longer use the planes in Slovakia or Poland in the naval attacks. Also with the addition of another curiser into 110, it’s now a no-brainer for the UK to scramble its fighters in 110 with the attacks I was carrying out before.

Now, it seems like if I want to sink the entire fleet on the 1st turn I should change my buy to 3 fighters to replace the losses I’m inevitabily going to suffer. So, what are the typical G1 moves to sink the UK fleet in 3.9?

    • How to play as Japan???

I’m by no means a beginner to Axis & Allies, I played the '99 Europe version extensively and played AA50 to death. I played a mean Japan in '50, but in global 1940 I feel like Japan has absolutely no chance to do well. Having to fight the Chinese, ANZAC, the UK, and the US simultaneously is just not feasible on Japan’s income.

I’ve tried a few different strategies as well. It seems like Japan can really only focus on one theatre at a time, so I’ve played games focusing on the south pacific, I’ve tried taking the fight to the Americans, and I’ve tried keeping the US out and focusing entirely on China until round 4 before branching off elsewhere. Yet no matter what i do, Japan gets trounced in the end. It certainly doesn’t help that Russia can send 18 infantry down your throat from the get go.

So how do the pros do it? I’d love to hear opinions, preferably from those with experience with a US player that goes all Pacific (this is what normally happens in my games).

    • RE: Rules question regarding planes landing

I’m surprised there isn’t a more definitive answer. I CAN’T be the first person to think of doing this.

I’m not seeing anything in the rules that would disallow it. A carrier is a valid landing space for any fighter or tac bomber, the rules don’t mention ensuring sufficient capacity for landings.

    • Rules question regarding planes landing

How strict are the rules for finding safe landing spots for planes? Let’s say you have 6 fighters that can attack a territory. They have no safe landing spot except for a carrier off the coast of that territory. Would you be able to move all 6 to attack, or would you only be able to move 2 because that is the capacity of the carrier?

Btw, my group plays Alpha +3, not 3.9, if that makes a difference.

    • Questions on fighting on the mainland with Japan

Last week was my very first time as Japan. I made a general plan of attack before the game. The idea was to spend the first 4 turns focusing entirely on China, keeping the U.S. out of the war as long as possible. I successfully took control of the entirety of China on that 4th turn, but I noticed this left me horribly depleted in terms of manpower and out of position to invade South East Asia afterwards. I did take over some of the money islands on turn 4 with the navy, but all in all, Calcutta did not have much pressure.

So what do the pros do where mainland fighting is concerned? Is the goal simply to keep China at bay rather than throw your resources at it? This seems to make more sense, since Calcutta probably poses a greater threat than the Chinese. Or have I come to the wrong conclusion again?

    • How to post pictures?

I’ve designed bills on photoshop to use for global 1940 and I’d really like to share them, so I started a post here after uploading all my pictures to photobucket. I noticed when I hit preview after writing the post, it didn’t show the actual pictures but simply the [img][/img] code. I then went down to additional options and noticed you could upload jpegs directly, but i did this with one of my jpegs, hit preview again, and there was still no picture.

So how do I do it?

      @MacNaughton:

The USA is not allowed to take control of DNG until it is in the war, right?
It would be great if the economic giant could be responsible for building the NB and AB on that island fortress.

The Americans are never allowed to take Dutch territories unless they are taking them back from the Axis powers. Only UK and ANZAC can pick up Dutch territories while they’re still Dutch.

    • RE: DOW question(s)

      1. Not sure about this one. The U.S. political situation allows them to declare war if UK is attacked by Japan, but I’m not sure if they can do this immediately or if they have to wait until their turn.

      2. They would both defend together, yes.

      3. The UK battleship would not defend as you have not declared war on UK. It would be able to withdraw on UK’s next turn.

      4. ANZAC ships would defend because any declaration of war between Japan and UK automatically brings in ANZAC.

      5. You would have to declare war on ANZAC to do this. You’re not allowed to place units in land territories occupied by a power you’re not at war with. You also must be at war with UK, and by extension ANZAC, to attack the Dutch territories.

    • RE: Need help with my Barbarossa

      @JeffM:

      Creeping Death,

If you are going for a straight up Barbarossa, this is what I do with the Axis.

G1 - Do the the Sea Lion buy to force the UK to go defensive
G2 - Buy all artillery, attack USSR
G3 - Buy all mech infantry (buy this so that it can catch up with the stack moving towards Moscow)
      G4 - Buy all tanks
G5 - Buy at least 3 strat bombers

When you launch the attack on G2, you have to decide which way to go: North (take Leningrad) or to the South (towards Stalingrad).  I persontally perfer going north and hitting Leningrad, as you can use your navy to reinforce the attack.  Once Leningrad is taken, I always buy 3 tanks with their minor factor to help with the stack moving towards Moscow.  The Start Bombers bought on turn 5 can reach Moscow, so go ahead and attack the capital on turn 6.  Barring a massive intervention by the other allies, this strategy almost always allows me to take Moscow.

A couple more things, if you are doing a Barbarossa attack, it is helpful to have the Italians move as quickly as possible across the Middle east… with Barbarossa, my goal with the Italians is to get to the Caucasus and put southern pressure on Russia.  If you can do this, you force the Russian player to divert forces away from Moscow

I have used the Japanese to help with the attack as well.  Around J4, if you have pushed through China and controll any of the three territories that border Russia (Sikang, Tsinghai, or Kansu) a strategic bomber can reach Moscow from any of these territories.  With the Alpha 3 rules, I typically don’t attack Russia via Amur as this will not trigger the Mongolians to join the allies; however, if you have crushed the Chinese and are lined up near the Russian border around J3-J4, go ahead and open up an eastern front.

      I hope this helps!

This is an interesting strategy. I noticed though that the artillery buy on turn 2 wouldn’t be able to get to Moscow until turn 6, so do you just send in your infantry without artillery support?

As to the other suggestions… I thought Sea Lion was a dead strategy for alpha 3 since Russia can now pounce on you before turn 4 if you take London. Considering my Russian player usually plays super defensive, this might be a really good idea. Does the Alpha 3 Sea Lion involve the 10 transports on turn 2 or is it a little different now?

    • Need help with my Barbarossa

Just finished a game, it was another defeat for Germany. Here’s how games in my group typically go.

G1 buy is the usual 2 transports/carrier build for the Sea Lion feint. I sink the UK fleet on turn 1, consolidate most of my infantry along the border with Russia, and attack on G2. The Russian player stacks everything he can on the frontier territories. As soon as I break through even one of these stacks, he retreats everything to Moscow, leaving 1 infantry in each territory. By the time I get to Moscow, it’s defended by 50 or 60 Russian troops and I simply do not have the numbers to break the stack.

UK usually leaves the Atlantic alone for a few turns while it screws with Italy through Africa. The US player goes all Pacific until Japan is marginalized.

So… what can I do to beat the stack? This has lost me the last few games and it’s starting to get really frustrating. Should I wait until turn 3 or 4 to attack instead? I feel that the longer I wait, the more infantry I’ll have to face in Moscow when I break through. Should I build ground units on G1 instead of ships? What should my buys look like on a turn-to-turn basis?

    • Strict Barbarossa viable?

I know Sea Lion is a very popular strategy, but is a strict Barbarossa strategy viable in alpha 3? I was thinking as early as first turn, leaving the European neutrals to Italy and taking all the French territories for the Germans, allowing all the Eastern front German units available to attack Russia on 1st turn.

What would the purchases be like on a turn-by-turn basis for a strict Barbarossa game? Ideal time to attack?
