    • Rank the weapons developments from best to worst.

Ok, so Classic/2nd edition, give me your thoughts on which WD is the most powerful, and why.

If you would rather get a little bit more into this subject, list all the WD.

And for the totally motivated, rank them in order/by nation!

Because I recently saw a video on YouTube, where the guy made a shockingly surprising comment about the WD I think is the strongest of them all, as being very weak, I’m interested in seeing how many other folks share his opinion.

I’m also interested in how folks would rank, say, Rockets. Rockets for the USA/Japan is quite weak initially, while for the other powers it is useful right off the bat, and as it deals it’s damage without AA having a chance to stop it, it is a nice little thing to be able to reduce an enemies income, for free, every turn.

But tell me folks, what are your thoughts?

    • TripleA, Classic, playtest balancing Germany vs allied Navies.

Hello everyone, I’m brand spanking new and looking to find a way to balance this great game so that folks want to play it again. I’ll offer to play the axis every game, until I win as much as I loose, using whatever house rules are needed to make the game a fun challenge for both sides! I have many ideas, and if you would love to help me playtest these ideas, to find something that will balance the game, let me know and we can get this party started!

Anyone interested in playing Allied nations vs my Axis?

I don’t mind having steam to do the DL, but after that, steam goes bye-bye. After that, would I be able to play AAO? Or just a waste of $?

    • RE: Axis & Allies Online Screenshots and Steam Page

Ok, so it looks like the featured map is something I have never played on, from whatever version that is, but my question is, as this is a computer game, are all other maps/rules included?

My only interest is playing Classic/2nd edition, so for me to spend any money on this product, it would have to have that map/ruleset as one of the options. Also, the ability for folks to mod in house rules would be a big factor in getting me to buy it.

I’ve never had a good experience with steam on my computer, so will there be support for other forms of online play? I only ever keep Steam on my computer for the initial DL, and after that uninstall it, will this impair my ability to play online?

    • RE: What are your comfortable game lengths?

I consider myself unlucky, as I have no tabletop friends to play with on a regular basis. We all got older, and families do take time, and so my gaming group rarely ever gets the chance to sit down at the same table! For instance, in 2017, I actually got to play A&A classic/2nd edition maybe a dozen times, none of which involved 5 people. I got to play Fortress America a half dozen times, but only once with a full 4 players. Because of that, I cannot in good faith claim any playing times as being comfortable currently.

That being said, a game that takes 2-3 hours was fine for my group in 2017, but we seem to get at least one fellow that is soured on any gaming longer than that.

My positive outlook comes from the hope of getting together over the internet with fellow gamers, and thus being able to indulge a mutual interest in some boardgaming.

What are some average game lengths for internet/skype/Vassal/TripleA for those of you that are actually playing other than in person?

I wonder what it will take to get this coded into tripleA?

Here is a crappy shot, but it gets the idea across well enough…

      4 board axis and allies

It’s big, and unplayable without the room to get around it, but on a computer, none of that matters!

Now, picture those four boards on an 8’ x 4’ table. There would be about 15" open space on each end, but only 4" along the top and bottom edges. To go beyond 4 boards, you would need a bigger table, because if you went for the six boards, they would actually over hang the ends of the table.

    • RE: Multi-Board A&A Classic/2nd edition.

Back in the day, I owned 7 boards, and 10 sets of pieces total, and we would all have a blast, but the biggest gaming tables I ever built were 4’ x 8’, and even just a four board setup would take up 40" x 66".

You know, I may just try to set this up and take a pic from my phone, and post that here. My webcam cannot even show one board close up enough to be able to clearly see the pieces, but the phone just might be able to…

      Hang on a second.

    • RE: Multi-Board A&A Classic/2nd edition.

Multi-Board is exactly what it sounds like, you play the game using two or more classic A&A boards, which can either be placed end-for-end, or south/south, or even both of the above when going for 4+ boards.

Their are a great many ways to play, and it can be a blast, but until I can build a table to setup the boards, I cannot even provide a picture. Later this month, I’ll have my Crazy Ivan youtube channel up and running, and then I can do some demonstration videos.

For now, just picture two classic boards joined end for end, and each of the two players starting off on on boards Russia. There are only 5 colors, so either you are limited to just 4 players, or there cannot be any neutrals in the game. If you have 2 players, each just picks a color, and sets up in Russia, with everything Russia has. The rest of the forces of each nation are setup as neutrals, and each player fights their way through the surrounding neutrals, and makes contact with the other players expanding empire, and then the real battles begin.

If your just playing with 24 IPC’s, and have to buy your first units, and not the whole armies for Russia’s starting forces, you can limit or eliminate the neutrals, and just blitz across the otherwise empty board, placing control markers as you rapidly expand. Total value for each board is still 147, but each player is in a race to grab all that they can grab.

You can also place the two boards south pole to south pole, and this is also an interesting variant, with Africa/Australia becoming major staging areas and battlegrounds.

Unless folks have two physical boards to play on, and several extra sets of pieces, no-one could really play this, but now, with TripleA, I just need to talk someone into doing the work to implement the coding, and then everyone can enjoy these much better balanced game, without actually owning any boards/pieces.

    • Multi-Board A&A Classic/2nd edition.

So, I’ve played many variations of this over the years, in one place or another, with one gaming group or another, and had more folks wanting to play this than the official game.

Yes, the board is bigger, yes the game takes longer to play a single players turn, and yes, you have way too much money to spend. All that being so, the big drawback to regular A&A is that each and every game starts off exactly the same, and because of the nature of the board and sequence of play, some things are always going to happen.

In Multi-Board, even the placement of the game boards is subject to change, as well as the starting positions, and the neighbors you have to face, before you even encounter your real enemies.

“Holy Mother of all games Batman”!!!

My poor little “Classic Colossal” version, that has never made it out of my head, is only 36" X 60", or 3’X5’. Yours is 5.5’ X 10’… I wouldn’t even have a place to set that monster up, let along play it. And 1,200 pieces at the start? How long is the setup for that bad-boy?

Looks like it. Thanks for the help, it was getting frustrating…

    • RE: If I have suggestions for improving gameplay in TripleA, where should I post them?

      Arrrgh!

I first tried to respond with this:

      Oh yea, for sure.

I was looking at the situation of a BB + Transport getting ‘hit’ by an attacking sub. Using this idea, the sub’s roll could have been either a ‘1’ or a ‘2’, and with the sub ability to kill without a return shot, the norm would be 1@1, and that’s not a really good chance for a very bad exchange, but with MAD, the same roll the sub used would be used for the return shot, so in the case where a player is loosing a BB for a sub, they would now have a 50:50 chance of killing the sub.

So, an attacking force with 1-2/d6 vs a defending force with 1-5/d6 {before sub hit}, ends up being 1/d6, but as the subs hit had to be either a 1 or 2, we then get a 50:50 chance that the transport kills the sub, which is still a very bad exchange, but hopefully a more palatable one.

and when that too was spammed out, I tired this reply:

Trying to respond, still “Spammed” How many characters can I type is without triggering the filter?

but, you guessed it, also flagged as spam.

@redrum Lol. Welp, that explains it then, heh heh. I was trying my hand at writing a bit more than needed, to try to flesh out the idea a bit, and that must have triggered the “SPAM DETECTED” filter.:jack_o_lantern:

    • RE: If I have suggestions for improving gameplay in TripleA, where should I post them?

      Hmmm…

      Somethings fishy.

I tried to post this on a thread there, and it keeps getting called ‘spam’ and fails to post. Not sure what is up with that, but not going to waste any more time with that software at the moment, as repeatedly having to re-type, over and over again, my intended idea has gotten old real quick, i’ll just post this here and later, if an admin can sort out what the heck is going on, I can repost it there and remove it from here.

**So, my very first post was repeatedly denied ‘as spam’, and as that was a kind of big post, I got a bit frustrated and was just going to forget about it, as the saying goes, but then I thought to simply re-write a short post, and see if this too gets rejected as spam.

Ok, so LL is great and all, as far as it goes, but there are still an incredibly large number of rolls in the game, that can see probability tossed out the window, and the chaos of randomness rule. My idea, while not able to take this entirely out of the game, can make things far better, by simple enforcing a simple change.

In every battle, one and only one die is rolled, after LL is factored in, and this roll result will be applied to any remainder that either side may have, on a given round of any battle.

Mutually Assured Destruction, if enabled, uses this single die roll, and since both sides are using this same number, the weaker side cannot outscore the stronger side with “Lucky shot, Sir” situations.

Attack that lone transport with your fighter/bomber? If they hit you, you hit them! No more annoying little transport killing aircraft and living to tell about it.

Play out 12 battles where the defender had just one infantry, and have them hit you 12 out of 12 times? My idea doesn’t prevent that from happening, but it does make sure, that in any and every battle where your forces had an advantage but suffered a lucky hit, it also makes sure that you hit them back!**

      Any thoughts?

    • RE: First Encounter with TripleA, a noob's first games.

A couple of things I was thinking of doing, but with the way FRAPS works and TripleA runs, I’m probably better off trying to just use a regular game board and pieces, as then I can post the exact situation where a choice needs be made. I don’t know anything {YET} about using the save game file posting, other than that it is possible. Are there some saved games posted in threads that I could look at and then post about, and where exactly should such comments be made?

I love the look and feel of TripleA classic, and even if I don’t get why the AI is doing what it is, it’s still a fun and enjoyable playing experience, but as a way of playing/demonstrating real-board situations and such, I’m not sure it is going to work well and easily. Maybe once I experiment with the editor feature, I’ll be able to set up some of the exact situations I’m looking at.

I was looking at some excerpts for a couple games played by @AcesWild5049 and wanted to make comments, but not in the game thread itself, so folks that don’t want to be reading my noob questions don’t have the game thread cluttered up.

Eventually, I’m going to want to start posting my ideas for things, and some things are simple, like changing the tech system, and others are far more sweeping.

One of the simplest things I want to do, is put in my ideas for multi-board A&A classic, and with the ability to publish my own custom maps into TripleA, I can get folks to easily see what I’m talking about. I’ll do the part that I can do, right now, and then folks can tell me what they think and how hard to actually implement my ideas will be.
