Actually, I think when Italy surrendered to the Allies in September 1943, the German army moved in and disarmed the Italians and bombed and destroyed the fleet.  The Northern puppet state of the Italian Social Republic was not much of a military force - the remnant of black-shirt fascist battalions were mainly deployed at counter partisan activities to quell pro-Allied Italians in the North of the country.  I can’t think of a single division-sized Italian formation under Kesselring’s command in central Italy fighting against the Allies.

Skytrex is definately the way to go either with the big $1,000 game or with the version without the minis.  The least expensive way to go is to buy the game without the minis and use plastic pieces and just by minis for the types of units that you don’t have plastic pieces for - though it is less pretty

For a much larger and advanced game that mixes in ellements from games like Third Reich and World at War - check out:

It looks like some of the advanced rules discussed here have been implemented in this game.
Been playing it at cons for a few years!

    • RE: The Importance of Rivers

We captured the effect of major rivers and terrain in our game - which takes some aspects from A&A and several more complext games

but, yes the map is about 3 times as large and twice as detailed.  I think you need this kind of scale to have meaningful river and terrain effects for a WW game.
