      In the sea lion counter, the UK doesn’t hit the Italian navy where it can scramble, instead - it clears the path to gib by taking out the block at malta, and then leaves a blocker to prevent the italians from counter attacking the UK navy.

      all available planes that can reach by R2 are headed back to London, landing on the carrier R1.  Make sure that the Italians can’t realistically hit the fleet by using a block.

      Unfortunately, Italy doesn’t have to throw its entire weight into Barbarossa.  They just need to send maybe 4-8 divisions as special crack can-opener units to the Germans.  The Russians can’t block all paths to Moscow since the Italians can throw these divisions at the block (plus the bomber) and the Germans then rush into Moscow with their blitzing units.  To avoid letting this happen, ultimately the Russians are backed into their capital.  Note that Italian can openers will ultimately deliver the oil fields and Stalingrad once the Russians are backed into their capital.

      The Italians can’t dispute Africa unless the allies concede it.  They just need to keep the fight going as long as possible in the Med and Africa in order to delay more important Allied objectives.

      India will eventually fall from Japan alone (or with German help if you play the game that far out and the Japanese aren’t focused on India) and it’s not as critical as bottling up the Russians.

      You really should try to hold London if at all possible and only use the knock out of the German navy as a fall back.

      Bring the med fleet including the transport carrying 2 inf or at least 1 inf 1 aa gun to gibraltar with the intent of landing troops back in the UK and stationing the consolidated fleet in 110.  If the Canadian navy survives, that’s two more troops that can reinforce.

      The Germans will need to hit your fleet on the same turn that they invade or else they will lose their navy the next round when you counter attack it.  If nothing else, the threat of the scramble defense will force the germans to assign some luftwaffe units to the sea rather than the land, and this boosts your defensive odds.  You also cancel the bombardment shots.

      Activate Ireland with your mech inf round 1 to create another landing spot for US bombers.

      Obviously max infantry builds with UK for R1 and R2.

      Get 1 or 2 american carriers stationed in SZ 102 on R2 so that you can hit the German fleet with bombers and ftrs/tacs after the invasion.

      Yes, the best way to liberate the UK is to take care of that massive german transport fleet first.  If you don’t take care of it, Germany might get to take UK twice, which is a disaster.

      In classic, Russia can block German forward progress by stacking in Karelia.  This isn’t an option in 1940 where Italian can openers force the Russians back to Moscow.  At that point, if the Axis can’t take Moscow by direct attack they can lay siege to it and take everything of economic consequence, thus securing victory.

      The next strategy that I’m going to try is an all out Kill Italy by UK and USA.  Maybe I can cut off the can openers this way.  I don’t believe that it will be successful however.  I won’t let myself take Italy so easily.

      I completely agree with the Gibraltar airbase suggestion.

      I also wish that the Axis were not able to produce inside Russian territory.  At least the Italian can openers would have to be replaced with Italian mechs coming in from Italy instead of Ukraine.

      I realize that the Russians could create bigger blocks to try to stop the Italians from can opening, but that’s just too expensive and places the Russians on the losing side of a war of attrition.

      Karl –

      Nice of you to acknowledge this.  I do concede the game we started about a year ago.  Yes, the inevitability of an axis win turned me off the game for about half a year.  Keep in mind that it could have been even worse than it currently is.  I think that Italian can opener ability which forces the Russians back into Moscow instead of coming out to fight at Stalingrad for the oil fields is the main reason.

      I have recently started playing games against myself using the now available Triple A software that makes this easier and I won’t play until I figure out a way to beat the axis playing myself as the allies, or at least until I figure out how to work the bid so that it’s even.

      Again, I think that the key is the Italian can opener.  Sorry, it’s not the early german attack since I can crush my allied self with my axis self even allowing the allies to declare war first on every front.  Simultaneous movement (all axis go followed by all allies go) would solve a big chunk of this in my opinion, but can openers are a big part of the game.

      yeah, I’m not quitting, but it doesn’t look good in Moscow and I might have done things differently.

      There’s of course, a chance that I could even get favorable dice in Moscow and after risking everything, that would be devastating to Germany (imagine 5 or 6 aa gun hits on the first round, it’s not that unimagineable) - and then you might have to lose planes to take Moscow or retreat.

      I need some time to decide however, sorry can’t promise quick moves unless I’m taking the Anzac and French.

      although, it looks like you will eventually wear down Mosow regardless.
