    • RE: The perfect country for the newbe

Yeah, I agree that a newbie should play on the Allies. The Allies require teamwork and they have to help each other out anyway. With a newbie on the team as a weaker country you can come to the rescue or try to fix his mistakes.

Every country has a role to play and can screw up the game for their side. I’d give a newbie the UK - It’s more fun than buying all INF with USSR and they can follow the US lead in the Atlantic. The US can guard Africa and UK can send planes and men to Karelia or Western Europe. UK isn’t threatened, either. Watching the colonies go up in flames kind of sucks, but your Allies should protect those.

    • RE: A question regarding research developments

Why would you need to roll against the heavy bomber specifically? That’s not fair, because the attacker gets to choose his casualties from all the hits, whether it be during a battle or picking planes to die from AA fire. The attacker should get to “guard” his Heavy by escorting it with other planes.

    • RE: First turn Russia, an IC in Yakut.

Ok, guest, I’m going to be very harsh with you because, well this is an awful idea. First of all, I dont know how your Eastern front can possibly last with 5 less INF there on T1, and I dont know why you think it can. Didn’t Ansbach run the numbers earlier in this thread? I sort of skip over the long posts, but I’m fairly certain this idea is suicide. Second of all, you can accomplish the same thing a Yakut IC would accomplish (2 INF in Yakut every turn) by marching 2 INF from Russia and Novo over the whole game. That would only take 2 INF out of Europe every turn, instead of 5 the first turn and 2 after that. You’ve grasped the big picture idea - stalling Japan, but you really need to look at the details and realize that Russia cannot afford an IC.

    • RE: Nazi Diplomacy

What are the rules for paratroopers? Cost, transport, combat, etc. I like the idea, but I want to know the most common paratrooping system.

This german diplomacy game sounds fun. It sounds tough for the Allies, but an all out brawl in the pacific would be cool to watch and play.

    • RE: Karelian Complex… dumb question

Runenzorn, I have to ask you about the German perspective of WWII. What view of the war is taken over there? How do they teach it in schools? Here they teach it something like this:

“Evil Hitler rallied the Evil Nazis to take over Europe, and the United States came and rescued the world. Oh, and we dropped the atom bomb. Oh, and Stalin helped us out, but commies are bad.”

I was also wondering if you feel a sense of national pride when you play and prefer to be Germany. Do you feel bad when you play as the Allies and you crush the Fatherland?

    • Games other than A&A (Blasphemy, I know)

What are some other good war board games out there besides A&A and Risk? Maybe something that’s shorter than A&A…it’s hard to set aside 5 hours for a boardgame. I’ve heard talk of that Civil War from Eagle Games, Samuri Swords, and a few other WWI and WWII games that I can’t remember titles of. Ouch, ended that in a preposition.

And Yanny, I suggest you move the General Discussion thread outside of the Axis and Allies Section and into the more general section at the top.

    • RE: Pricing the Techs

I agree that some sort of progressive tech system should be used, but that’s a whole other topic. Mr Ghoul, I was just wondering how much you would be willing to pay to get one of their techs off the shelf, not how much youd be willing to pay to get a random roll. Would you really spend 25 to get super subs? Moses, 60 for heavy bombers seems a bit much…that would be 2 turns of spending all your money on research. Although 30 is too low now that I think about it. I don’t see how that could ever be a useful investment, or how a side could come back from that loss, even if it was spread over many turns. How about a cost of 45 or 50? 15 for Rockets does seem more reasonable than 10. I’m really not sure what LRA, subs, or Jets should be since they have never seemed that important to me. Industrial Tech should be easy to put a price on - if it costs $20 then you don’t break even until you have bought 20 units (most likely INF) That’s only 2 or 3 turns of buying INF, and I think that’s a little quick to see gains on a tech investment. So maybe 25-30 for IT? Anyway, just some crazy thoughts.

    • Pricing the Techs

So if you had to put a price on the technologies how much would you be willing to pay to get each one? There is usually talk of which technologies are weaker/stronger, but maybe this will provide a better way to rate and revise the tech system. Here are my rather haphazard and unthought out prices-

      Rockets - 10
      Super Subs - 10
      IT - 20
      Long Range Air - 15
      Jet Power - 10
      Heavy Bombers - 40

    • RE: RR: Does it help the Axis?

So we’re all in agreement? RR helps the Axis? That’s what I think as well, but if anyone disagrees I’d like to hear why. My reasoning is very simple - Russia can easily take out Manchuria and Ukraine or Finland on R1. If they aren’t allowed to attack then they get less $$ and Axis have more units to work with round 1.

    • RE: Wacky UK Strategy

Interesting, I don’t know if Germany can afford to lose 4 INF to gain one fighter, but I guess every game is different. Yanny, as Germany can you build fighters fast enough to keep up with losing them in naval raids? If the UK has that carrier w/2 fighters on it then I don’t see how it’s possible.

    • RE: I've got a great game going

I’m Japan so I don’t think I’ll be building any carriers. Actually, the Allies can oust the relatively weak Axis navies (BB & TRN, BB & SUB) any time they want to, but they haven’t wanted to. It’s been more of a psychological blockade and they have given up on boats to concentrate on planes. (US has 6 fighters and a bomber, UK has 4 fighters) Hey, I’ll take what I can get, especially since I’m so screwed up in Asia.

    • RE: Axis Victory, Possible?

Does it matter if the US takes Brazil? They really gain little advantage from an IC there, and any sea forces built (say 3 subs)would still be alive after Brazil falls. If building an IC in Brazil can add even 3 subs to the remnants of the Japanese fleet (A Battleship or two, maybe a carrier) you have a strong force to guard Africa or wreak havoc on the US waters. And this force is able to strike much sooner (and with more units) than a force from South Africa. I’m not saying an IC in Brazil is always a good idea, but I think it’s a strong placement and occurs enough to be worth mentioning. Besides, it’s fun and just looks neat.

    • RE: Wacky UK Strategy

Yeah, thats what happened in a game I played not too long ago. Germany went all out on Karelia and took it, but lost 3 fighters and barely had units left in Karelia. A combined Russian and UK counterattack got karelia back, and the Germans were out of luck when it came to the impending naval assault AND they had a hard time gaining ground as well. It was only a matter of time before germany fell, but they were never a serious threat and didnt even have the ability to slow down an Allied invasion.

Another good spot for an Axis bomber base is Brazil. It’s worth 3 (that’s always a nice bonus) and you can bomb the heck out of every Atlantic sea zone plus a few territories in Africa. Of course Germany can already do that from Western Europe, so I guess I meant to say a Japanese bomber base.

    • I've got a great game going

I started a game this weekend with 3 friends and it’s shaped up to be a very good one so far. All 3 of them are fairly new to the game, so we haven’t settled into the boring same old routine of Allied domination of Germany.

Anyway, we don’t have Russia Restricted so the Russian player busted out on T1 and took Ukraine, and then Scandinavia on T2. However, he has been building at least one tank a turn making his eastern front sort of weak. He isn’t strong enough to take on Germany, but he still has a solid defense in Karelia. In Asia he has sent a few guys to stall Japan, and after 4 turns Japan still can’t take Yakut. He sent 4 INF and a fighter over to help defend the US factory in Sinkiang, and with that he can actually be a pretty strong offensive force in Asia. They are making 27.

Germany is kicking arse. They still have their sub and battleship, and used their airforce to blow up the UK navy. And they blockaded the UK water, and also sent the sub out to pick off the US transports. Their mediterranean transport was alive until I think R3, so they have put enough guys in Africa to hold it. It’s actually interesting, they are about to wipe the last UK guy off the map and then have free reign. They also got one infantry over to persia and were able to take India. (Japan killed all of India’s forces, but couldn’t capture India that turn). Their is no threat of a European invasion for at least 2 turns (UK and US keep losing their boats) so Germany can send it’s full 33 IPC might at Russia.

UK lost all their boats, and wouldn’t build any more for a while. The UK player got so discouraged when they had no navy that they pumped thier $$ into the RAF. So UK has 4 fighters (I think they lost their bomber and one or two of the original fighters on bombing raids and naval attacks that went sour) The UK player finally realized they need boats to get Africa back and built a TRN and a BB, but the German navy and airforce are within striking distance, so he may lose them. And the UK player landed 4 fighters in one of the few African territories UK controlled. He plans to wipe out the german forces so they can’t take the rest of Africa, but with no land units in there UK can’t get any of it back. UK is making 24.

Japan isn’t doing as well as Japan is supposed to. They are having trouble getting solid and the mainland, and the US factory in Sinkiang is starting to slow them more. Japan spread too thin and stands to get their butt kicked out of south Asia. However, they were able to do a successful Pearl Harbor, chase the US boats down in Panama, and then capture panama to move their boats through it. They took Brazil with one INF, and have a transport and a battleship in the Atlantic. They used the Battleship to take out the US transports. And they are at 33 right now, but they are about to lose a lot of it. I’m not sure if Japan is going to put sufficient pressure on Russia in time.

The US also can’t get a navy going between German and Japanese attacks and blockades, so they have gone for a huge airforce as well. 6 fighters and a bomber, and then they build 2 tanks in the Sinkiang factory every turn. They have lost china, hawaii, and Brazil so they are down to 30. The US and Russia in Asia are getting pretty strong together. And the US probably has enough air to start dominating in the Atlantic, but they don’t have any boats at the moment.

Germany is getting very strong in this game, and I think it’s actually Germany that will win it for the Axis. 2 turns ago the Allies looked very strong, but now the tide has changed and the Axis look to have the upper hand. All in all it’s been a very good game, and I’m thankful we haven’t fallen into a pattern yet.
