    • RE: German Strategy…beef up the navy or straight to Moscow?

      Imperious Leader has a nice strategy about the Baltic Carrier in another thread. It almost garantees a 60% chance of winning against any UK/US fleet in any Sea zone if you also build a bmb. It forces the US to regroup at UK.

      Frankly, it could make that 14 IPC a good investment.

      I’m not sure yet if G navy is all that great, but I always do it anyway because it changes from the usual all land setup. It makes our game a lot more interesting.

    • RE: Submarine Rules…Whaaat?

      Realistically… not a super good idea, in my opinion.

      There are SOOOOOOO many variables that come into play that digging this deep will just make the game too complex.

      The current rules mimic the “abilities” of a sub well enough, so that, apart from modifying the basic stats, there is no need to add another layer of rules. Maybe make them a 3/0 unit.

    • RE: Submarine Rules…Whaaat?

      @MrBill13:

      The very first two I ran into had me shaking my head. Nowhere in the rules does it say that artillery can fire on Subs. If this is the case why not men and tanks. Why not have subs shoot at artillery? I’m just sayin’

      The second one was about surprise attacks. Basically Krieghund said that subs get sneak attacks every roll that a destroyer isn’t present. Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of “sneak attack”. The way I interpreted the rules was that you get one shot at a sneak attack, and then hit or miss thats it. The rules specifically state “submarines that fired in step 2 cannot fire again during the same combat round.” Also, with the original version, in a sneak attack, the defender that is hit is immediately removed without the ability to retaliate. Is this no longer the case?

      Artillery can’t hit subs, and vice-versa, because they can never be on the same battle. If artillery, tank or infantry are on a transport, they are just cargo, they’re not participating in the battle.

      A destroyer is an “anti-sub” vessel, that’s why it cancels the subs special abilities. And you do get the sneak attack every round of combat, not just the first round. The phrase you mentioned is there so that people don’t have their subs fire in the sneak attack phase and during regular combat. The sub fires once per combat round, either in the sneak attack phase, or during regular combat (if an enemy destroyer is present). Yes, if you hit and sink a vessel, it does not get to fire back during the round of combat, it is removed immediately.

      Also note that if an enemy destroyer is present at the start of the battle, but is then sunk, the sub regains it special abilities.

      I’m a big beer drinker as well, but I limit myself when playing AA42. More than 2, and the strategic element goes away. “Yeah, 1 BB, 1DD 1TRN, and germany should be able to take Brazil, GO!!!”

      My favorites beer brands for AA42 are Harpoon (New england) and Archibald (Lac Beauport, Quebec).

      @Derek77:

      Isn’t the lobby for live games and not for PBEM??

      Live games are the main attraction, in the lobby. However, as you know, when playing AAA, you do have time to chat with the others while your opponent plays. So you can keep an eye on the chat log. Going there and asking for a PBEM game is a good place to start.

      Really? You have to be very unlucky, and, to me that’s not reason enough to abandon this tactic.

      I don’t have my battle calculator with me, but it must have something like 95% chances of success.

      And the odds of not losing a signle Russian FTR must be close to 50%…

      That’s as good a deal you’re gonna get to sink a BB…

    • RE: Strategic bombing raid

      And you certainly have to factor in the AA in there.

      So each bomber will actually do 3.5 * 5/6 IPC damage (so a little under 3). And on average, you will loose 2 IPC worth of bomber (12 IPC bomber * 1/6). for a net gain of… 1 IPC. While this may not seem optimal, it makes a lot of sense if the nation you are attacking it economically disadvantaged. So it makes sense for UK/US to bomb GER, and it makes sense for GER and JAP to bomb RUS.

      That’s just a global mathematic rule. A lot of specific situations could also call for it. “If I bomb UK for at least 2 IPC, it won’t be able to build 1 ACR + 2 FTR” kind of situation.

    • RE: Russian moves to start game

      @Hobbes:

      and mistakes by the Russian player (not moving the 6 inf on Evenki/Novo/Kazakh to Moscow/Caucasus on non-combat move). It is an opportunity that may come up or not.

      I’ve heard two train of thoughts about these R INF that are in Oriental non contested territories during the first turns. The first is to bring them all back to Moscow/Caucasus ASAP, fueling the war against G. The other is to slowly move them towards India, starting a long chain of R INF fueling the Allied defense there, effectively slowing JAP’s advance, making J have to defend the East coast.

      Slowing JAP will usually lenghten the game, which usually favors Allies. But fuelling the Eastern front will favor R income, also favoring Allies.

      Any thoughts on what’s best in which situation/strategy?

    • RE: US1 transport to Algeria?

      I usually do it with the 2 TRN, actually, to land 4 land units into Africa. That will usually cost me 2 TRN, but those 4 land units are really important in the Africa fight. They may actually be the only ones I will need until JAP actually commits to Africa.

      I say usually, but it’s quite variable, depending on how many FTR have landed in W.EU, how the Anglo-Egypt went on G1 and UK1, what the chances are that the G Med fleet will be sunk on turn 2…

    • What do you drink while playing AA42?

      So, I’m playing AA42 with my brother in-law this week-end. My wife asked: do you want me to buy you anything to drink? Yes, I replied, but what?

      To me, a tabletop (online just doesn’t have the same appeal) game of Axis and Allies (any version, really) is really about relaxing with buddies just as it is about replaying WWII. And it wouldn’t be complete without the appropriate drink/food combo. Be it nachos and soda, beer and pretzels or even sugarless lemonade and veggies, the game requires fuel…

      Very nice! In our games, we don’t really keep track of anything else than IPC income, but we play with OOB rules. Looking at your chart, I wonder how you can keep track of all of this if you’re not using said chart!

      There was a strategy in classic edition that revolved around denying the other powers the use of ICs due to lack of pieces. I think it was called the von Quirine doctrine or something… Not a great strategy by any means, but a fun strategy.
