    • RE: New AA50 Image!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just looking over the new AA50 board image and it occured to me how arbitrary the geography is in this game.

Why is the Belgian Congo in this game at all?

Spain is off limits, even though certainly in the realm of possible history/gameplay Spain could have been a major player or battlefield of WWII; a lot more of a possibility than French Eq Africa or the Belgian Congo which are indeed in play.

Certainly Turkey could have been a significant factor in this alternative universe of a game we call Axis & Allies than ever could have would been French West Africa or Rhodesia.

Yet there they are: Belgian Congo, French West Africa, Rhodesia all open for invasion. Spain and Turkey and others are closed off.

This is so ahistorical, we disagree about countless other nuances and rules about being historically deficient. Yet without Spain and Turkey, we are are not even accorded the ability to play out WWII in ways which could have indeed happened a lot more probable than the invasion of the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia by the Nazi war machine.

Why of all the possibilities of the Axis and Allies timeline/universe are these 2 of the more likely ones that could have happend are indeed shut down?

I wonder if this is a harbinger of things to come?

Perhaps a deluge of unanticipated proportions coming forth from WOTC?

a landslide of gargantuan proportions of AA50 news and information?

a flood of knowledge and inside information?

an expose of photos and diagrams of AA50?

a veritable earthquake of strategies and setups?

a massive photo compilation of all the units?

an announcement that Turkey and Spain are now minor Axis or Allies?

      can we expect all that?

It seems it takes forever to get to the home page and then so slow to get to different topics.

      Or is it just me?

In your experience or the experience of others were Spain and Turkey regularly invaded to get at Gibraltar and thru Turkey to get at the Soviet Union or towards India?

    • Anniversary Edition already Obsolete/Superceded?

I am by no means an expert in AA as you all seem to be, but spending much time here and reading about the house rules proposed and about the concerns of many of how “broken” this new AA50 may be, isn’t there some merit to suggest that the most innovative AA out there may be the AA clones, esp the Pegasus Hobbies edition which has already implemented many rules that are discussed here as fixing the “shortcomings” of AARevised and the anticipated AA50?

It occurs to me that many of the innovative changes to AA Revised were inspired or driven by “alternative” AA’s such as Xeno’s and by Pegasus Hobbies’ editions.

There are 1939 scenarios, rules about the invasion of neutrals, additions of France and other nations, diplomacy etc etc. Huge solid mapboards too. Perhaps, but I don’t know, the issue of subs has been resolved?

I mean, what is there to drive the selection of AA50 over The Wargame: WWII by Pegasus Hobbies?

I do not say this just be provocative or heretical especially in this forum, but as a non-expert why buy AA50, when there appears to be wonderful innovative alternatives?

Or is there a place for both?

    • RE: Neutrals

In classic AA, what were the rules about neutrals?

Were you not able to invade them or at least cross thier territory by a payment of IPC’s to the bank?

Has it been confirmed which neutral rules apply to AA50?

    • RE: How do subs work?

So does one DD destroy the abilitity of all subs in a SZ to submerge, or is it just on a 1 to 1 basis?

Is this confirmed in the new AA50 rules?

    • RE: New Release Date - November 18?

You guys just crack me up!

Talk about whining. I have never heard so much whining about something so little as a 3 week delay in the introduction of a GAME, as I have heard here!

      For goodness sake lighten up!

Look about you in this world today and see what’s really going on, and then don’t whine about a trivial game. We are lucky to be alive and to be grateful for what we have, much less whining about this.

This site appears to be one big whinefest.

I mean we haven’t even played the game and there are whiners here about how broken it is!

I am a casual AA player and am not into the dead zone strategy and trading territories and the JTDTM and KJF or KGF of you self styled professionals and thank goodness.

I played AA Pacific the other day with my two sons and we had a great time. No whining about how the game may or may not favor Japan, Japan did win BTW, we just enjoyed playing the game. The USA built 8 battleships. Why, I don’t know but one of the reasons was becz I could and those 8 battleships looked good out there. Probably not the best strategy and certainly not one I’ve seen or read about here as “The” strategy but I tell you it was fun!

I’ve played AA Europe with my gaming group and AA Revised too and thank goodness we just sit and play. There is no choreography or predestination of how the game plays and ends. It is always new and fresh, I guess becz we are not experts or as professional as you all are.

You all sound so jaded about AA. Sometime watch some “amateurs” play and you’ll probably be amazed at all the “mistakes” they make, but you will be amazed how “true” the game is and not so artificially altered so that the JTDTM or KGF options must be played to demonstrate superiority.

I guess if all you got together for a game, from all the cauterwalling here I would expect it to proceed in a very scripted manner by everyone proceeding with their country’s scripted/expected response.

Thank goodness we have not reached that state of petrification.

It would take all the pleasure of playing AA and seeing always a different game before us emerge each time.

I have no beef with any of you. I enjoy reading about AA and your ideas and “listening” to all the ideas about playing, but what has struck me is that it seems this intensity has lessened the simple pleasure of just sitting down and playing it.

I hope no one takes this as an insult, “no harm, no foul” as I would say, but as a casual player I just wanted to point this out to this community as a whole.

I am certainly looking forward to AA50. It will be grand in scope: the size of the board and all the pieces and the addition of Italy and just having that set up on the table in the basement is going to be great!

Avalon Hill WOTC whatever you want to call them, is producing a great fun filled game that will divert us all for hours. I for one applaud them and I am looking forward to those Saturdays and Sundays gathering with friends to play this monster!

It will certainly be fun and that’s the bottom line isn’t it?

why should we assume that italiansarecoming is Italian?

there is nothing to indicate that at all, unless one assumes that Italians can not speak/write good English and I certainly do not make that assumption about Italians

to me it sounds as though the writer is a 12 year old and becz of that I just skip over and ignore the posts

the posts contain too many American English abbreviations and American colloquialisms for me to believe they are by the hand of an earnest Italian practicing his imperfect English

however regardless of the source they are undoubtedly annoying and for that reason I just skip over them

    • RE: Will Rockets be a gamebreaker?

But wasn’t that exactly the point of paratroops, dropping them behind enemy lines?

I could see a house rule really opening up the game if the rule about having to drop them at the 1st hostile territory was eliminated.
