    • RE: Opening a mint A&A 2nd edition (1987) or playing A&A 1942 (2009)

The current system for weapons development is fine and may add more fun to your experience. Though Spring 1942 is a great game by itself and I often find that using weapons development simplifies the strategies. Basically, roll until you get the tech you want and then use the tech. This is just my own preference but I find playing without the tech more enjoyable from a strategy standpoint. I like knowing the odds going into a battle.

Having said that the news about weapons development in the AAE40 is somewhat unsettling. If they change it a little (not that I have any suggestions to change the system) it might work out better but who knows. I have, however, learned to trust the game devs because when I have originally questioned a rule it turns out after further playing it usually is better that the rule is what it is.

Yes, but weren’t nearly all those bombers and trucks sent far away from Canada? So the game just makes it more simple and puts the value in the places the vehicles went to?

I think this helps explain some of the standard moves even though its not 1942 its fairly similar advice.

    • RE: Several Questions - Thank you ahead of time!

There a many other people on this site more qualified to answer these but since no on has yet…

      1. I would have to say yes though I haven’t encountered this scenario before.

2)Yes. That is how most battles start out with Russia and Germany. You would invade West Russia from all four bordering territories. The battle would be started with Russia saying, and usually pushing the selected units into or in the direction of West Russia, that they were attacking with whatever units they have chosen to use. Then you place those units on the attacking stripe and the German starting units on the defending stripe and roll out the battle!

      3)Yes and yes.
3a) What would prevent you is finding a place to land. You cannot land on the island you are attacking and having aircraft carriers in the pacific is not the easiest thing to do.

      1. All of those count. For example, if you have a bomber in London and you wish to attack Berlin, Germany your first move is into a sea zone. Here lets say move 1 is into SZ6 move 2- SZ5 move 3- attacking Berlin move 4- SZ5 move 5- SZ6 and your final move, move 6- London to land safely.

      2. No. Flying over units or an anti-aircraft gun will not engage your fighters/bombers in battle. You can continue on to your target landing zone or the territory you wish to attack.

      3. Yes you can. Though infantry units can only move one space loading and offloading on a transport is legal. Same goes for AA guns or artillery.
6a) Yes you can. If you want you can attack Alaska on J1.

      4. I am of no help here, I use the standard board for every 1942 game I have played.

    • RE: Differentiating sea vessels

I particularly have had trouble with the cruisers and destroyers. I simply just discuss it with the person I’m playing with before hand and we make one unit a destroyer and one a cruiser. For all we know we might have been mixing them up this entire time but those are the units we use for them.

    • RE: Ger Sub SZ8 to SZ10 combat first round?

A sub verses a cruiser one on one sounds like a horrible situation. Usually when I attack, I attack with enough to make sure that whatever it is I’m going after is going to die. You bring more than enough to take out your target. The only time you don’t is when you are desperate and at that point the game most likely is already lost, or close to it.

I also use tackle boxes. It was a little hard to find ones that I liked which would fit all the pieces but what I use works well. Keeps everything neat and secure. I would recomend this over the bags.

I usually use that sub in conjunction with a fighter or two in order to take out the UK crusier by Gilbralter. Using it to try and take out the U.S. is interesting however. You may need to take the risk here if you strongly believe the U.S. will invade Africa in round 1.

But you can get a bigger map from this site. I understand the other versions have a larger board but even then I remember wanting a bigger map for those versions as well and then making one.

I’m greatly interesting in Pacific 1940 but with this thread I don’t see myself getting it anytime soon. Has WotC said anything about a ‘fixed’ version being sent out to stores that I have missed? And if so when will that be?

    • RE: Allied opening strategy

So I tried this strategy today with my own little variations. For one I didn’t completely go after Germany. I sent my Moscow fighter down to Egypt to defend and spread out my Russian attack in Europe to take West Russia, Belorussia and the Ukraine.

G1 took back Belorussia and the Ukraine and walked into an undefended Leningrad. They also took out the UK ships in the Mediterranean. There was an attempt on Egypt but it failed =) They left with there bomber and didn’t take the land

With the UK I went with the IC in India and held my navy there. I put two guys on the transport in Australia and moved them towards Africa. I used my fighter on the AC to kill the Japanese transport and landed him where he came from. I also 1v1 the Japanese sub and hit on the roll! woo!  I also took out the destroyer and transport with my bomber and two fighters from London. I landed the fighters on a AC I bought in SZ2.

Japan went with transports and a bomber I think…Russia had stacked all its Infantry on the Japanese boarder so they went with an amphibious assault and some planes but it didn’t work. They took out the transport I left for dead (with the UK in hopes of it saving the India fleet) but…they still took that out. They also took the Pearl Harbor fleet but were left not being able to take China. I felt Japan failed on this round for the most part.

Here is where I think I messed up. I took Algeria easy and had planes in range next turn to do some damage but I lost my transports and cruiser so easily on G2…Though at this point Germany and Japan were looking sorry.

By round three Germany had failed at taking control of the seas, the Med fleet was gone and so was their northern fleet. They tried to build up an air force to prevent my navy but it failed. Africa was lost to them, Russia was actually pushing them back and the UK simply put troops in Archangel.

As the game was left germany had holed up in Berlin W.E. and S.E with not much hope on the horizon. Japan had taken Calcutta and has a sweet navy to boot so my attempts to slow them were…okay. Russia has a land army about to retake India though and the U.S. forces built up in Sinkiang is looking to invade as well. I think this strategy, though I did take my own twist on it, works. I’m not sure how to save Germany.

    • RE: Allied opening strategy

I should have asked earlier but did you build an IC in Africa with this strategy either in Egypt or South Africa? It seems like the idea of building an IC in South Africa isn’t so popular in AA1942.

    • RE: Countering Turn one India IC

I don’t think that the purpose of placing an IC in India is to hold India. It deters Japan from walking straight into Russia an dallows the allies much more time to get into Europe. Also with India only having a value of three I don’t feel like the IPC drain is a huge commitment. Also when you couple this with a IC by the US in China you turn Asia into a back and forth contest between for those middle terrorities similar to how Russia and Germany treat Eastern Europe.

As the UK in this strategy I usually build a sizable air force to keep Germany from amassing a navy, which with help from the U.S. this is not a problem. That frees me up to put a combination of units in India and to attempt a pipeline of units into Archangel. I feel like the goal with the India IC on UK1 is to stall Japan and harass them when you can. This leaves Russia to devote a much larger force to Germany and with a little luck I have been able to to attack Japan with Russia as well.

    • RE: Allied opening strategy

      @The:

One tough sacrifice of this strategy is that you have to abandon India.  I find this acceptable because, against a half-decent opponent, India is bound to fall by the 3rd turn at the latest anyhow.

I think abandoning India is more of a sacrifice than you think even though, as quoted above, you call it tough. If you put a IC in there on UK1 you have the ability to hold out for a lot longer than turn 3, or so has been the cases in the games I have played. But allowing Japan to run through largely unchallenged doesn’t sit well with me.

Having said that, I think there is some serious value in taking the Med away from Germany so quickly. While amassing troops and naval units up in Africa I could see a thinly spread German defence making them much less effective. I would imagine they would become mostly defensive minded and play more like Russia does in most games.

I think the counter here for the axis would be a beastly Japan. They may need to put their own IC in India and build up a pipeline of reinforcements to harass the navy you place in the Med. Germany may also choose to invest in some bombers and subs to keep the invasion at bay, using the subs as fodder- though being spread so thin Russia could beat them on the eastern front of the UK might build up a sizable offensive. I’ll have to try it out and see what happens.

      Interesting idea for sure.

    • RE: Standard and Total Victory Question

I played once with a total victory option and for my brother (who was playing as the allies) it became overly frustrating. I took out Russia and the UK so with the oncoming mass invasion into the United States and the silly amount of moneys I got each turn the fun value simply wasn’t there. The many other times I have played the standard victory it has been much more entertaining.

Someone sent me all the rolls but no file. If you would like to play could you send me the saved game file? Also, I prefer to use tdice.appspot.com/web for my games so I don’t get a zillion emails. But, if you prefer the emails I can do that too.

How does that site work? I couldn’t seem to get just the dice part, I’m a bit lost.
