RE: Destroyer on G1
If you can lure Russian/UK forces into Norway, and Karelia, you get a helpful BB shot each turn (awesome killing an INF or ARM with no retaliation), and you also increased the threat on the UK mainland while having a durable navy.
Battleships only bombard during amphibious assaults, this wouldnt work.

RE: Bids: Std vs. Revised Games
“but I don’t think anyone as done a lot of research and has hard numbers on it.”
I have.
The key bid amount depends on the ruleset you are playing.
I could add more. But I will wait for others to expand on my HINTY HINT HINT!
beer!
GIVE ME YOUR HARD NUMEBRS NOW.
We play without a bid around here, and the Axis still manage to win 3 or 4 out of 10 games, like switch said.

RE: Germany instantly killed Britain
No, you cant build units unless you have your capital, the only things you can do are move and attack.

RE: The correct 1st turn use of the German Mediterranean Fleet
I take Malta, and throw the destroyer out to stop the british med fleet. Airforce destroys british destroyer in Med.
Next turn I use the transports I bought and the existing transports to have a big invasion on egypt. 2 or 3 turns later im threatening caucasus.
I like an allied invasion of Greece. I rarely do an allies invasion from the north, I prefer to secure africa quickly and make Germany devote resources towards protecting their underbelly. Any vichy/italian invasion is probably easily pushed away on the beaches. A Greek invasion, however, can cause the German player to pull a couple of troops off of the eastern front that they wre using to plug the territories after barbarossa from russian invasion.

RE: Clarification needed on artillery
Infantry goes back to one.
If the artillery is destroyed, its not around helping the infantry anymore, so the infantry does not get the support.

RE: Ice-skating in Calcutta
Ha, yeah, this is something I thought of as soon as I read that NA.

RE: My house rules for Europe: gives Germany a better fighting chance
I like to play where there are mines in the danish sea that act as anti-aircraft for naval units. This really deters any major naval invasions of germany or shipping of troops to russia.
Also, to represent Germany’s superior armor, their tanks defend on a 3.
Finally, because the game starts in the spring of 41 and I like to think that one turn is a season, the United States cant enter play until turn 4 (cant do anything in the spring, summer, or fall), UNLESS germany attacks one of their shipping-box thing-ma-bobs or attacks any US units.

RE: Axis Wins/Losses
I too won with Germany for the first time yesterday.
Cherbourg had great die rolls and held USA off until turn 9, Caen was taken by turn 5 (british beaches cleared quickly), and I htought I was going to lose VERY soon after that. Then I swept my tanks up and cut off british troops moving towards St Lo, and kept reinforcing St Lo so it was the US versus Germany.
Of course, it helped that the allies had terrible reinforcement rolls, such as the united states rolling a 2 in the heat of the mid-game struggle for St Lo.

RE: WWII: The Struggle for Europe and Asia
I dont own the original, but I know somebody who does, and he’s the one Id most likely end up playing this with. So I guess its not too bad then.

RE: Rundstedt France Defense
Im thinking about trying this in my next Europe game as Germany. I just need to make sure that the Luftwaffe are in place to kill some transports…I dont want a landing so large that I cant knock them off the beach.

RE: WWII: The Struggle for Europe and Asia
I’d like to see it played out. Ive reap some of the games on the boards that Craig Yoper has posted, and It really seemed interesting.
I might be convinced to get a copy, I’d like to expand my strategy gaming past Axis and Allies, Risk, and any rules sets ive thought up. I just dont know where id put something that big, and it seems like It needs a LOT of pieces from many different games, which I dont have.

RE: How would you change the map?
The only problem I really have is how out of shape the map is. I’d like To have a realistic looking game board (probably requiring a larger board) instead of this big ugly hunk of land trying to represent europe. I saw a picture on boardgamegeek under revised that showed some guys map with a realistic looking world (only the eastern front was shown), I really liked it.

RE: Axis Wins/Losses
I just got it for christmas and played it twice. Allies won both times.
They were both very close game, having the allies take the 3 cities on turn nine and wipe out an attacking German force during turn 10 to secure victory.
4 German artillery attacking 3 inf and 3 armor in Caen…Briatin got lucky and got the 4 1’s and 2’s it needed.
Cherbourg got taken easily both times, the axis just use units already nearby to stall. My friend who has palyed before said Caen is easy to take, but it seemed hard when I played, since Germany always had 2 88’s and 6 armor in it.
Like Frimmel said, the allied handling of planes is very important. Bomb lone german artillery whenever possible, then fly planes into cities to stop German reinforcement. One a single beach head is clear, begin the march to the city in need of reinforcement, and just flow troops through this funnel. Once you get a steady chain, direct your planes to defending the funnel, or use them to tie down German divisions trying to flank and cut these reinforcements away. Any German unit without artillery supports is a dead one.
As Germany, Im not sure what to do. It seems to get pretty close. Keep Artillery in you reinforcement zone, move some artillery into cities, use tanks to block the allies push to St Lo, move Infantry into cities. I think the reson Ive lost with the Germans is because Ive split my forces between St Lo and Caen. Next game Ill probably devote more forces to Omaha beach and trying to stop my funnel tactic. Caen is easily reached and becomes a game-long struggle, and Cherbourg is hopeless. St Lo and the area between it and Omaha/Gold beaches are the game-breakers.

RE: WWII: The Struggle for Europe and Asia
This game looked VERY interesting, but after I read the rules, I too was a bit turned off by the timeline and italian surrender. I do like how in depth the map is, and how it begins in 1939.
I could be wrong here, but didnt italy overthrow mussolini after the allies took over sicily?

RE: When you call off an amphibious assault…
Thank you.
The counter ended up being pretty embarrassing, 2 submarines were killed by 2 transports.
-
When you call off an amphibious assault…
…arent you supposed to leave the transports with the units inside in the sea zone they wouldve attacked from?
All of the units I was using to attack the enemy units outside the landing zone were destroyed, and now Im not sure what to do with the transports I was using for the land units.

RE: Anyone ever play Axis and Allies in a free for all format?
I like unlimited attacking (in Risk only), it adds an element of surprise since you can attack right into your opponents gut.
Im playing a free-for-all game later tonight. Im probably going to be Russia, jus to add a challenge.
I sense an early treaty with Germany and a war with the UK in my future…Russia in africa/india might not be a bad idea.

RE: Alternate Turn 1 buys…
I dont know, if an allied player took one, I believe it could be taken back next turn, or at least the buys in that territory contained since it would be surrounded with newly placed units next turn.

RE: Anyone ever play Axis and Allies in a free for all format?
risk is awfully superficial
when you play risk you would at least play with advanced rulesI personally love Risk. Its not about fancy units and smart buys, its more about diplomacy. And its easier to teach a beginner than Axis and Allies, so some of my friends prefer Risk.
There was a discussion not too long ago aboutt his in the Variant Rules forum, I posted a link with a few rules sets to play like this.
I prefer to play untl 2 powers get eliminated, and then the remainng 3 get winning placements by their IPC totals.
There was one rules set that made for spenind IPC’s to declare war, a rules I really liked.
UK might not be toast, if the US or Germany forms and alliance, the UK can survive a bit longer, using their remaining navy or airforce to attack either US or Germany (whoever didnt make the alliance, obviously). If Russia makes a border alliance with Germany, trading WRus for Karellia, then it takes a load off of both Russia and Germany, since they can now devote their forces towards Africa/Britain and Towards mainland Asia.
