    • RE: Defensive Fire Within Smoke Hex?

      Already answered by MOT in the Miniatures Game forum.

      @Motdc:

      I know this one.  Combat VS a unit in the same hex (DF, Close Assault, etc) does not require  line of sight “into”, “out of” or “through” its hex.  So for vehlce VS vehicle DF, the only way to draw DF is to go through hex the other vehicle is in.  The defender can opt to perform the DF while the Mover is in the same hex, though obvioulsy if it succeeds then the Mover has to trace his path back to the first legal resting position.

    • Defensive Fire Within Smoke Hex?

      I’ve searched the forums and found one person who said that a unit can only make Defensive Fire within its own hex if it is covered in smoke. In the case of a KV-1 passing through the same smoked road hex occupied by a Pnzr Mk-III, if the Mk-III made a successful DF, the KV-1 would then be stopped in the hex just outside the smoke hex it tried to pass through. Does sound like a good interpretation to you? (Anybody?)

    • RE: Request Help Making Balkans Scenario UDM File

      Thanks MOT. Yours, or anybody’s help would be greatly appreciated.

      It seems like the bulk of the units, maybe except the recent North Africa release, has been incorporated in the 1.11 mods update. These units would meet the requirements for all the great historical scenarios posted on the Avalon Hill site. Is it correct to assume that all that needs to be done is to edit one line of XML code in an exisiting UDM mod and switch it with the name of the new JPEG map file?

      I can make maps all day long (it’s kind of what I do for a living anyway). I would really like to make a UDM file for each and every historical scenario that Avalon Hill has posted. I can provide the maps for these scenarios if someone else can make the new UDM file and update it to this forum.

      I might be able to get more people to play this great game (in real life and on this forum) if historically sound, play tested scenarios with pre-set force builds are used.

    • Request Help Making Balkans Scenario UDM File

      MOT (or anyone else who knows how to write the XML files for MapView) … would you help me make a game mod for this Balkans Scenario: Battle of Corinth Canal? All the units required are in the current 1.11 mod versions. I just need help importing the map file I made for this scenario. The map JPEG is too big to post on this forum, so I can either email it too you or you can walk me through the process and I can make the UDM file on my end.

      The scenario write-up can be found at:

    • RE: AAM at Historicon 2008

      @Half-Track:

      I’ll have to attend next year… what kind of give-awys did they have?  Any cool scenarios?

      It may not be worth the trip depending on how far you have to drive. There were no formal AAM events, tournaments or scenarios. Just a lone WOTC table out in the open lobby with one guy running demo games for kids mostly. He did hand out alot of booster packs for anyone that played games.

      I may consider running an AMM table with pre-set historical scenarios next year. We’ll have to see how the game does with the new releases …

    • RE: AAM at Historicon 2008

      I am back from my first Historicon experience and must admit I had more fun playing at the Axis & Allies Miniatures than I did at any of the huge, 8 player and up, historical games.

      My brother ran me through a short Flames of War demo and it was OK. But the funny thing was … we showed back up to the WOTC table on Saturday night with an ammo can of cold beers and played a 300 point Eastern Front late war game with 4 players on the cool map Steve (WOTC Staff) brought.

      The only frustrating thing to me was that many of the attendees of the WOTC table were kids dropped off by their dads on the way to some other big table game. This left Steve having to demo the game to a bunch of kids who were primarily interested in the free give-aways. Don’t get me wrong, Steve did a great job with them. It’s just a shame that the table wasn’t equally attended by gaming adults.

    • AAM at Historicon 2008

      I understand WOTC will have a demo table set up for AAM at Historicon 2008 in a few days. I’ll be sure to stop by and hope to run in to some other AAM players there.

      Well … I’m glad it still be played here online at least. I don’t really feel motivated to go and buy anymore booster packs unless it picks back up.

      @dezrtfish:

      Cobalt, how do you get jpgs of the maps? Do you print and scan them?  If you’d email me a couple maps I’d like do do some cut and paste and make some more maps.

      OK … I’ll send some samples in a few minutes.

      Can someone set up the map for this scenario… very cool!!!

      Sure Half-Track. You can never have enough scenarios where Leathernecks get to hook and jab with the Imperial Japanese. Bare in mind that this is coming from a retired Marine!

    • RE: How much have you spent on the miniatures?

      I estimate I spent about $300 - $400 total since I discovered the game in Summer 2005. Sure I could have built two Flames of War 1500 point forces for the same amount, but Axis & Allies Miniatures allows me to play with a broader range of units and nationalities.

    • Is This Game Being Played in Brick & Mortars?

      I know there is a small, dedictaed online AAM gaming group here, but are there any physical AAM gaming communities out there? There are three game stores in my area and only one of them will stock Axis & Allies Miniatures. There are only two other AAM gamers I know of in my area and they are in it only because I should them how to play on a Saturday afternoon. I’d like to see local AAM interest grow and possibly even host some tournaments.

      Do you think it’s a dying cause and that the game will live on only via dedicated PBEM groups?

    • RE: A&A Miniatures Re-write

      Those first two examples you listed didn’t sound so bad. I’m not so sure about the three soldiers in a hex idea though.

    • RE: Re: Converting images for A&A Mini Modules

      I’m glad to see other folks have jumped into the production. The system that had all my unit graphics templates crashed a few weeks ago and I lost the next batch of units I was working on. Fortunately, all my scenario map templates were on another computer so I still can add more maps in the future without having to start at ground zero.

      By the way, nothing says that we can’t design a custom set of maps just for AAM online gaming. Let me know if you have any ideas in this regard.

    • RE: A&A Miniatures Re-write

      That’s concerning because I really like the rules as they are. I know it would be tempting to add more phases, like the old Avalon Hill Squad Leader “defensive fire phase” or a “morale” phase but the ease and speed of the current game rules override those considerations in my opinion.

      WOTC doesn’t seem to place customer confidence in high regard.

      MOT, when you have a chance, would you please replace the bold red text that says: The current version is v1.07 with an actual link to the latest MapView version at the begining of this post? I can’t find the v1.07 on your MapView web site. Thanks!
