    • RE: Avalon Hill Guadalcanal Online Campaign

Thanks for the great reference leads “timeover51”. I’m currently skimming through the old black and white WWII Ballentine Book series of the the campaign but look forward to getting into a more in-depth study.

Got them MOT. Thanks - I’ve been off-line for a few days. I hope now to get a usable War at Sea mod going for Turn-2 of the Avalon Hill on-line Guadalcanal campaign.

    • RE: Avalon Hill Guadalcanal Online Campaign

I have been enjoy the on-line Avalon Hill Guadalcanal Campaign so much that I checked a bunch of books out from the library on this fascinating campign and got the board game a few days ago. I’ve run through two games and am enjoying it very much.

Is it me, or is this game very heavy on casualties? There were a couple of huge air, sea, land battles (mostly fighting for New Georgia) and by turn three, both the Japanese and Americans were extremely depleted in assets. It seems like by Turn-3 neither side has enough assests to “island hop” any more.

Thanks for the feed back MOT. I think before I make any major changes, I’d like to run through a game via this forum here and just get a feel for the game. I’m still having a hard time finding a local store that stocks the War at Sea basic set with rules, maps  and counters. More to follow soon …

    • RE: What's your favorite tank or vehicle?

I like the M3 Honey Stuart with its “All Guns Blazing” SA. It’s low cost, fast and I like to use it as support in an infantry heavy build.

I’m not a big fan of the uber tank battles with “Superior Armor” and “Hulking Mass” SAs.

    • RE: Anyone here interested in Poland?

There are a few Poland scenarios under way right now in the “Play By Forum / Play Miniarues” section. I think MOT is partial to Polish early war scenarios.

While I think everything looks good in this first attempt at a War at Sea MapView game mod, it really wont be a usable gaming tool until I get my version of MapView registered. The UDM files I create on an unregistered version of MapView can be opened, looked at and tested … but can not be saved for use in PBF games. Looks like we’ll have to wait until MOT gets back from vacation for the registration.

    • RE: Guadalcanal module for ABattlemap!

I’ll take a look at it tonight. I have been busy making MapView mods for tactical level actions in the Guadalcanal Campign via Axis & Allies miniatures and War at Sea rules.

Yes, there should be ship names that appear when you hold the cursor over the image.

We do the die rolling here on this forum.

      Exampe dice roll:
      DiceRolling 12D6:
      (1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5)

We post the MapView files here on this forum after each phase. Have you followed any of the Axis & Allies Miniatures “play-by-forum” games here on this forum? They all use MapView modules and the forum based die roller.

I have updated the War at Sea Map 01 and added the Set I US Fleet. The units are to scale now. I’m working on the Japanese fleet right now.

I just tested it and everything worked OK on this end. You should just have to download the ZIP file, extract the UDN file, and place it in your MapView mods folder. When you open MapView, create a new game and you should see “War at Sea Tset” as the last option of game to create.

I have since been tweaking the map size and working on the US and Japanese fleets. I should have a fully functional version posted tomorrow night.

Please feel free to try this MapView test of War at Sea which can be downloaded at:

      http://www.battlevault.com/Campaigns/Guadalcanal/Guadalcanal_01.htm

Mot has done a great job of walking people through how to get up and running with MapView on this forum. All you need to do is drop the downloaded “War_at_Sea_Test.udm” file into the MapView mods folder and you should be good-to-go.

A couple of notes on this test file:

      1. I am still trying to figure out the right scaling of everything.
      2. The color and bit depth of the map went is a little out of whack.
      3. I still need to go and buy the starter set to learn the game to see what else needs to be added to the MapView mod.
      4. I ultimately hope to have six MapView mods, one for each map, with at least Pacific WWII fleets.

Sorry Death Heads … didn’t mean to fire any shots across the bow. The second set of maps look much better, though I didn’t know you could play WAS with hexes as well. I need to learn and play the game to see how the rectangular quadrants work compared to the hex based map that I am familiar with.

OK … I may not be a programmer or computer savy, but I’m here to tell you that I can do a much better map than that.

Until I download the MapView files you provided, I guess I can get started by pulling ship images off the internet.

    • Avalon Hill Guadalcanal Online Campaign

The Avalon Hill website has just posted request for orders for their online Guadalcanal campaign at:

      http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aam/ah20080805c

You can participate in this campaign on three different levels: strategic board game, War at Sea Miniatures (for the naval engagements) and Axis & Allies Miniatures (for the ground battles).

I am mostly an Axis & Allies Miniatures player and play the online version here on this forum thanks to Mot’s MapView program. I am also a graphic artist in real life and would like to put together whatever graphics are necessary to get MapView versions of the board game and the naval miniatures game.

Is there anybody else on this forum that is going to play in this campaign on any level?

    • RE: Any interest in War at Sea support for MapView

MOT - Is there anything I can do (graphics support) to get a War at Sea version of MapView going or has it been determined that there isn’t enough interest?

Avalon Hill is getting ready to start a Guadalcanal campaign that will use elements of the startegic boardgame, War at Sea, and Axis & Allies Miniatures. I’d like to participate on all levels, but only have Axis & Allies Miniatures as a forum based, PBEM option. (Thanks to you!)
