my cat made a peacefull protest against the war while we had a break by sleeping in our dice box.

Imagine if it had done a ‘violent’ protest by killing all the plastic soldiers :-D

its only funny becuase it didnt happen Luckily shes too old for that. On  the other hand i did find the german artillary all over the painting table  this morning were she steped over my peices to get to my wifes cereal bowl for the last of the milk.

Good stuff chrillenilsson like you say they may not be totaly accurate but they look like ships rather than olive plastic and are easilly distinquishable as american. good decals are they from ghq?

I am also haveing trouble coming up with ideas for the anzacs to make them destinquishable from the brits.

      B 17’s

      Italians
not the most exact design, especially the navy but hey i am happy and there is no mistaking those italian ships. i dont know what country used the deck design i got from a ghq painted set of ships but i thought that would good forthe italians

I think its fair play unless the victim is new. Maybe you should just give the players a quick breif and point out unexpected avanues of attack at the begining of the game and after that its their fualt.

last game my wife did it to me in rome. I had not payed enough attention and was expecting the americans to land in greece which i hadnt taken. I had also while getting carried away with my assualts and sucsesses in africa and russia had forgotten the importance of the capital city. I paid a heavy price in man power and money taking it back.

I did not know they are making more miniatures.
i have been buying some sherman and german tanks for variety from another figure company since the scales are identicle. But what i want is a wildcat ot corsair for the pacific. wicked.

I dont know what the answer is to your cornundrum. I would say yes paint your new ones but if you got the time paint just the ships of those you havent replaced yet maybe  a few tanks of each unreplaced side

      To megastein

they are all very valid points and thanks for the feedback.
however for me i have aproached this project with the following priorities

      1. They must look good from the gamers view while sitting at the table
      2. The must be vivid and not dull in colour to aid in stage 1 and be distinguishable from the other sides
      3. be historically accurate

stage 1 and 2 overide 3 for me. I am OCD and love to get it right as much as possible and research everything but on this scale comprimises have to be found.
The ships especially like you say are difficult to identify with out some clue. i have not seen the axis and allies paint style though i have been getting ideas from the GHQ forum although both are a bigger scale. You might not like what i have done to my itallian ships but it makes them unique and have i used a royal navy design from the deck to make the italians differrent.

My uses use of lots of shades and colours is a simple  case of even a 1 colour tank has many shades of colour due to the way light reflects on it.  take the t34 I painted a colour which matched the t34 and and painted some highlights. Becuase of the scale the colour didnt look right and encredibly dull and flat so i dry brush light shades of olive as highlights and egdes. Now it  might look a bit messy up close but on the board they stand out and look about the right shades from that perceived distance.

In the end its about what style and level of detail makes you most happy.

      @MEGAEINSTEIN:

If you want me to be honest i think that the painting looks very amateur.

Some things that could improve your work:

      • Use a base black spray coat from warhammer.
      • put more water on ink so that is not to thick.
      • use decalcs for roundels, don´t paint roundels cause that gives a really low quality look.

nope  i am not a profesional i just like painting. i just thought i would share the way i am doing mine which is a bit differrent i also like to see other peaples  to compare interpretations of colour  style and ideas which i like and borrow for my own.
i agree with the decals especially the american ones i struggel to do straight lines and stars . a black base coat takes away colour and makes it dull, a white coat is better.

ANYways whats the point in it all when last night i was playing europe with my wife and she kept attacking me with backwards faceing t34s :-D

some good painting there. some straight lines unlike mine on the carriers.

may i suggest trying washes on your battle ships NOT the aircraft carriers though. the batle ships have lots of nooks and detail for a dark grey or brown wash to pull out the detail.

      haven´t ever tried a wash…. but maybe I should…

Try it on just one. dip a brush in a dark colour, brown works well for me. Dip the brush brush in some water and nudge the brush on the side and you will see how strong the paint is still. Keep dipping until you like the water/paint ratio. dont panic if it covers the model all over and is too thick it happens to me still just thin the brush more and apply more watered down paints until it thins and use the brush to soak up bits which are too thick.

it sounds more complicated than it is just start with a very watered down wash and see. it useally takes an hour to dry with acrylics but its the last thing mostly anyway

      now it worked…. good work!
      Nice!

I´m doing mine as well, as we speak :)

      cheers
i like to see other peoples paint work styles and preferences.
There is alot to paint though some countries can be  put on low priority like russian ships, you dont see too many of them being built in a game.

Thanks all for the kind words. The armour desert colours are modelmaster valejjo yellow ochre with yellow ochre/buff mix for highlights.
the planes are buff base with buff with a tiny bit of white added for highlights.

for the gun smoke staines i just use a very fine and very very dry brush with practicly any paint left on it and sweep the brush at the wing and away until it applies enough paint.

i like the variety of japanese carrier designs i just wish i could keep my hands straight for lines and symbols

    • Painted playing pieces

      Hi all

I thought i would post some pics of the playing peices so far i have painted. I have painted them with the view to look good from over foot away. for each base colour i tryto add at least one subtle highlight colour to it. It maybe hard for the eye to see higlights if subtle but the brain sees it and recagnises it as more natural. for the ships a brown wash not only brings out all the detail on the ship but the staining of the deck helps give it scale.

Useing a very fine brush with a water downed brown or grey paint is good for adding detail which isnt on the model. Just make sure the paint is bareley left on the brush so a faint line apears on the model.

The american bombers are not painted with silver paint which i find on such a small scale looks wrong so i used a series of gradients of grey from medium working down to white for reflections. They look messy up close but it works from a distance of 12" or more

I am not going to stick too religously to real detail if its too confuseing to players identify thats why the americans ships are all grey and the brits are the same camo.

The infantry miniatures for the game are nice enough but they need a good coat of paint to adhere to the plastic which takes away all the detail so i am going to replace them with 15mm miniatures.
