      @Yavid:

      I’m not interested in only OOB rules. I’m not interested in writing any opitional rules for a game I know nothing about, never seen, not for sale yet, never seen the map, and know nothing about the OOB rules. I’m interested in learning a game before I “improve” the game.

      This.
      All these posts about big things that look like house rules, yet we hardly know much about the official game itself. Not to mention that so many of these posts contradict what we actually know (like no tech… or complex rules while we’re already told that the game will be LESS complex than A&A 1942… etc…) If someone were to call all of this speculating… that wouldn’t really be true.

      I’m not saying we should not be talking about custom house rules and the like, but if this whole sub forum is for talking about what A&A 1914 might be like, why are we talking about things that most likely WILL NOT be in the game?

    • RE: G1 Italy move?

      @capnstak:

      So it would be a joint attack?

      You can attack a territory with units that come from different areas, as long as they’re able to get there.

      In this case, yes you can attack Egypt from units in Libya as well as from Italy via transport.
      @capnstak:

      What about the DD in SZ 15? Should I kill it with my BB or use a FTR to destroy that before I move my transport?

      Before amphibious assaults can occur, you would have to clear the sea zone you’re invading from.
      In this case there’s a British Destroyer, so you HAVE to destroy it in order to use the transport to attack Egypt with. If you were to somehow fail this battle and the UK Destroyer is still alive, you would no longer be able to unload the units and would have to retreat the transport and its cargo.

      Keep in mind that this won’t exempt any land units from Libya and planes that are attacking Egypt. They would still have to endure 1 round of combat before they would have the option to retreat.
      There is an order of combat and I believe its:
      Naval battles
      Amphibious battles
      and then everything else.
      Simply because if there is a battle that has one or more transports unloading involved and if there is sea combat where the transport(s) are, if the attacker fails the sea battle then the transport(s) are unable to unload their units to attack.

      @capnstak:

      And if it were taken out I would not only have to attack from the TRN but also from Libya?

      All combat movement happens at the same time for that nation’s turn, THEN actual combat occurs.
      So if you move your units from Libya into Egypt and used your transport to unload units into Egypt, you would have to do the sea battle first then do the battle in Egypt. Regardless of how the sea battle went, you cannot go back on your unit commitments that you have set before. So if you won the sea battle, then the troops from the transport and Libya WILL attack Egypt. If you lost the sea battle, then only the troops from Libya WILL attack Egypt. Its not really a matter of choice at this point, you make your decisions during combat movement and cannot change it at all during actual combat. The only changes that are made are those imposed by the outcome of battles (like the destroyer still being alive and preventing your transport from unloading.)

      @capnstak:

      If Egypt is taken do all the units go into the territory or can I choose which ones go into Egypt?

      After units have participated in combat, they MUST remain in the territory that they attacked. You cannot decide to attack and then pullback a few units after successfully taking over a territory. The only time you can pullback is if you decide to retreat from a battle, which the opponent will still have control of a territory. Also, keep in mind that you cannot retreat some units and leave some others still in the battle. ALL units retreat or ALL units keep fighting. Except for units unloading from transports.

      The only units that are exempt from staying in areas that were just gained are planes. Planes must land in territories that were friendly at the start of their turn. They cannot land in territories that were just taken during that turn.

      Perhaps 2 Mechs and 1 Tank would be better off for battle in Africa than 1 Infantry, 1 Artillery and 1 Transport.
      They’re both 14 IPCs to buy.

      However… If and when the allies secure Africa, those transports can then be used to invade Italy, Southern France, Greece, Yugoslavia… Or perhaps taken out of the med towards elsewhere in Europe. Of course, in this strategy, Britain would have to retreat its Med fleet out of the Med.

      I currently don’t have the map nearby me, but instead of attacking Tunisia, perhaps you could use your airforce to attack the French fleet next the Southern France instead? Then land them in Italy… or North Africa if they can make it, to support Italy’s Med/African campaign. Would be better than risking them for an infantry, as when you take out those French ships, Italy will have less Allied naval units to worry about and help it to secure it’s national objective.

      I don’t think so. He just kept saying that there will be many minor powers.

      And yeah, I was thinking if these minor powers are controlled by major powers, then Serbia and Montenegro would go to Russia and Portugal to Great Britain.
      Maybe Romania to Russia?
      Bulgaria to Germany…
      Not sure about the others.

      UK.
      Just the best allied power to play as.
      Also, yeah India and Britain should be just one thing here.
      My group kept splitting London and India into two powers for our first couple of games until we realized we were playing wrong. Luckily we sort that out, as UK going against Italy then became a lot more easier.

      @z0m4d:

      I also try to avoid 60/40 rolls (when I know in advance the odds… I can’t calculate that well on the fly, only trusting faulty intuition). However, I want to try ch0senfktard’s strategy a couple times.  It might be worth sacrificing the UK fleet if it sets Italy back.  The only thing Axis have going for them is early momentum and time to advance before all-out-war.  If you can stop that momentum early, even if it costs a lot of “hardware,” it might be worth it.  I really enjoy reading all these different strategies!

      I’ve thought about it some more… Even if Germany threatens to do a sea lion, maybe it is still worth sending those fighters. Maybe. Because no matter what Germany does, America will be in Europe in full force, so they may build up a London liberation force… Eh… seems okay, yet seems pretty bad at the same time. Thinking about it more makes sea lion seem like a bad option for Germany in Europe 1940 because of the USA… I have to play Europe 1940 some more.

      Now perhaps I should get more on topic or at least somewhat.
      I have employed a semi-abandon Egypt strategy in Global 1940 once.
      I say semi because a good size of my forces were somehow still in Egypt by the Italian turn and could have been destroyed, but my opponent feared my possible counter attack, so he backed off… which may or may not have been his biggest mistake. I was able to keep him from getting Egypt from there on.

      I had South Africa pumping out Transports with infantry and artillery from Turn 1. Eventually I had it so that transports were putting troops in Egypt from South Africa every turn, plus an eventual minor in Egypt sealed Italy’s fate.

      I have only played Europe 1940 once and that was as the Axis. So I have yet to use any Allied strategy in just Europe.

    • Minor Powers in A&A 1914

      Would have posted this in the “Playable Nations in 1914” topic, but that got really off topic, so I made this new one.

      Larry has said that there will be “many minor powers”
      I’ve understood the term “power” in A&A as a playable nation.

      So, how do you all think minor powers will be like in the game?
      Would they all be playable individually?
      Would all minor powers share their combat and movement in the same turn?
      Or even be combined totally as a single player?

      Maybe they aren’t really “powers”. Just territories that join a major power when that territory joins the war or perhaps act as a Pro-Allied or Pro-Central neutral when that territory/territories joins the war.

      I hope they’re all individually playable, although I am really doubting that.

      @orania:

      Can i clear a SZ with planes (there is a TT and a DD in the SZ) and NCM my fleet through this SZ to another one?

      I saw this in a Tripple A match i followed on the forum.

      Is this a legal move? Tripple A will let you do this.

      Yes, it’s legal. As long as the attacked SZ is cleared (or only has submarines and/or transports ) ships that didn’t move during combat movement can NCM into and/or through this SZ.

    • RE: 2nd Ed Strategy: UK Abandon Egypt

      Its the reason why you continually see people talk about sea lion around here.
      If Germany doesn’t threaten the UK, Italy suffers greatly.

      There is just no way Italy can adequately recover. There is only so much that Germany can do to support Italy at that point.
      Perhaps they can start threatening the UK, but whats the point if UK has already decimated Italy?
      It could have been prevented from the start.

      About Tobruk… I’ve never thought about that. Always went to Ethiopia.
      Whether an amphibious assault on Tobruk is a success or failure, Italy won’t be in a good position to take North Africa afterward, so its probably worth it.
      Although, you’ll have a small Italian force running around central Africa…

      Italy can build whatever naval/air force buys it wants, the allies will have a bigger and better force in the Mediterranean soon in this scenario, especially if the US chooses to go through the Med.

      But I suppose Italy doesn’t have any other choice, eh?

    • RE: Declaration of war by the USA

      The rules state that the US can declare war if an Axis power captures London.
      Doesn’t say that London must be occupied by the US turn.
      So the capture of London is enough for US to declare war, even if it gets liberated.

      Also, the example you provided is impossible to do, as USA goes before UK. The only way to liberate London before the US turn is with Russia. Or France liberating London from Italy.
      Both of which are extemely unlikely to happen.

    • RE: Germny Turn 1- tell me what you think!

      I’m assuming that you’re playing 2nd Edition rules.

      @cody341:

      Purchase Units: Buy 2 bombers and 5 infantry- you will have to use money from NOs

      Germany only has 30 IPCs to spend in round 1. So, if you’re buying 2 strategic bombers, you will only have enough IPCs left to buy 2 infantry.

      Also, no one starts with National Objective money. Only the value of their territories at the start of the game.

      -Move 5 Infantry from Germany to Holland/ Belgium

      Wait… how?

      -Move Newly Made Bulgarian Infantry to Romania

      You can’t move Infantry gained from Neutrals in the same turn that you got them.
      You’ll have to wait until turn 2 to move them.

      Attack Sea Zone 110 with:
      -Subs from SZ 103, 108, 124
      -Battleship from 113
      -Bomber from Germany

      I don’t think the sub from SZ 124 can get to SZ 110.
      Also, the 3 fighters can scramble, so this battle doesn’t look too well for Germany.

      Attack Sea Zone 109 with
      -Subs from SZ 103 & 109*
      *Note Convoy Disruption

      The Scotland fighter will scramble here, as there aren’t any units that can hit it.
      Convoy Disruption happens only on the victim nation’s collect income phase, so the UK can wipe out any remaining submarines with their SZ 111 ships and fighters and not worry about Convoy Disruption.

      You also mentioned earlier that the SZ 103 sub would be attacking SZ 110.(?)

      Attack Tunisia with

      • 1 bomber from Germany

      Don’t see why you would put a strategy bomber in harms way just to clear out Tunisia. And a French Infantry at that, its value is less than any other Allied infantry.
      Just saying you probably shouldn’t risk your valued and expensive units in order to attack areas that aren’t really high priority. That bomber will probably be more useful dealing with the UK fleet.

      Don’t underestimate the UK fleet. You’ll need your air force to attack them with, alongside your submarines and Battleship.

    • RE: 2nd Ed Strategy: UK Abandon Egypt

      I haven’t been able to do an all out attack on Italy yet, but…
      If Germany completely stays away from any Sea Lion, then I would send 2 fighters and a bomber from England to attack SZ 97.
      Use the Gibraltar Fighter to attack SZ 96 (Hopefully alongside a Cruiser).
      If the SZ 91 Cruiser is dead, then you can send a Destroyer to tag along with the Gibralta Fighter in SZ 96.
      (The battle in SZ 97 would then be around 80% chance to win if Axis scrambles.)

      The Gib Fighter, Malta Fighter, SZ 98 Tac and England Strategic Bomber will land in Malta.
      The Italians will probably be left with just their few ships in SZ 95 and their bomber.

      Now about any counter attacks…
      Whatever UK ships that remain in SZ 97 is susceptible to a German counter attack (via Luftwaffe) leaving the rest in the Mediterranean to Italy with her remaining ships and air force. However, all units in Malta would be pretty much guaranteed to be safe. (Assuming the Destroyer and Transport off Malta are destroyed.)

      But if the Axis are smart enough to not scramble…
      If the attack in SZ 96 is successful, then Italy will only have 1 transport, 1 cruiser, 2 fighters and 1 bomber to attack Malta with. Malta is still probably safe, but most likely at quite a cost to both Italy and UK if Italy invades.

      (I’m assuming that all of the planes that will land in Malta survive.)

      Italy cannot replace its units as easily as UK does and since Germany will probably be focusing on Russia, UK will be focusing on Italy. So although Italy may have its Mediterranean NO, it would only be a matter of time before UK beats them back. Italy might also have USA breathing down its neck after Turn 4.

      Haven’t tried any of this out yet on the Europe map alone, but I’ve been wondering about how would this end up.

      Actually, an attack on SZ 97 has really good odds for the UK if they send everything that’s available to attack.
      But if Germany threatens Sea Lion, then its not really a good idea to send out the planes from England.

      Allies only defend in an area together, they never attack together.

      And your ally’s destroyers does not detect subs if you’re attacking.

      @knp7765:

      You are SO right there. There have been a few times when I play Japan that I simply hold out against a US invasion. While the US may have trashed my fleet and is occupying SZ 6, he has to build a decent invasion force, which like you said has to be transports + infantry + artillery @ 14 IPCs per set. The US will be staging all this on Hawaii. He will bring up 3 more transports with 3 inf and 3 art then next turn I simply plop down another 6-8 infantry and stymie his invasion plan. His invasion fleet gets larger and larger while my infantry stack also keeps growing. Meanwhile, Germany is beating up Russia and closing on Moscow.

      @Eqqman:

      If the Japanese are forfeiting control of SZ6, how are you getting the income to keep plopping down these additional infantry?  Presumably you’ve lost all your non-Chinese income to Convoy attacks.

      My thoughts as well.
      If the IJN has been destroyed, then ANZAC and/or USA should be taking advantage by stationing submarines in convoy zones. The Japanese income would soon then become nothing, no need to attempt to stage an invasion.

      I’m pretty sure the only differences are that the US has different NOs.
      Also, Russia is neutral, it has no units, it is not playable, and it cannot be invaded or have units non combat move into its territories.

      US NOs:
      When the United States Is at War:
        30 IPCs if the United States controls Western United
         States. Theme: Major shift from peacetime to wartime
      economy.
        5 IPCs if the United States controls both Alaska and
        Mexico.
        5 IPCs if the United States controls all of the following
        territories: Aleutian Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Johnston
        Island, and Line Islands. Theme: National sovereignty issues.

      There’s just a few differences…

      USA has different NOs for the theater games. In Europe 1940 SE its:

      When the United States Is at War:
        20 IPCs if the United States controls both Eastern United States and Central United States.
      Theme: Basic national sovereignty.
        5 IPCs if the United States controls all of the following territories: South Eastern Mexico, Central America, and West Indies.
      Theme: Defense treaty and trade obligations.

      USSR has an additional NO…

      When the Soviet Union Is at War:
        9 IPCs if the Soviet Union controls Novosibirsk.
      Theme: Units and resources being recalled from the eastern territories in response to the Axis threat.

      And, of course, there are no ANZAC units in Egypt.
      And unlike Global 1940 SE, no British infantry are removed from Egypt, so Egypt still has 2 British infantry in Europe 1940 SE.
