German naval in the Med is a lot of fun so I usually take S. France with 4 Mechs. It can help Italy get to 20+ IPCs pretty quick. That gives the Axis some good options, including sending troops to Russia. Last time I played Germany, the battle for Moscow was close - Russia barely defeated my German stacks. Italy had just enough to follow-up the attack and won it with only 1 tank remaining!

RE: Fleet Sizesposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
… for every turn this fleet sail away from its Home Port, the Battleships ability to soak hits will be more and more valuable. IMHO.
As has been said, fleet configuration depends on the reason for the fleet’s existence. To add to Narvik’s point, the battleship’s bombard can be crucial especially in a tight amphibious assault.

RE: ANZAC Strategyposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Many of the responses about what to do with ANZAC are situation dependent. They also seem to be more about what to do later in the game, but what about ANZAC’s starting strategy? Suppose Japan starts with Young Grasshopper’s opening move on J1: takes the Philippines, Borneo, starts the ground war with China, and leaves enough troops in the north to stalemate Russia. So we know the disposition of the Japanese fleet but not the US response. I’m thinking there are three general scenarios:
-
US spends 80% or more in europe
-
US splits their income
-
US spends 80% or more in the pacific
What are some good opening moves with ANZAC for each scenario?

Yes, a good summary. Just about to start a game with a UK player that I suspect will be conservative on T1. Don’t know how but everyone in my group has missed the British Somaliland move!

Speaking of frustration :x YG, you had a link to a youtube video describing your house rules and new turn structure which I now can’t find! Can you please repost the link here?
Thx,

RE: Custom Rule Bookposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
I don’t want to get into a legal debate and I am not an attorney, but I do have experience in this area related to the legalities of intellectual property. YG, what you propose to do in creating a single document containing rules and other supplementary information for distribution is not infringement of any copyright because of a principle called “fair use”. Most people don’t realize that no copyrighted work is protected just because it is copyrighted.
Basically, fair use allows a copyrighted work to be copied in whole or part as long as it is creatively enhanced with original material, or “transformed”. By creating a single document, a bible of G40 if you will, including house rules and other info like Cow’s playbooks, you are transforming the original rules into a new work that you can copyright yourself. The four criteria that govern fair use are listed below along with how your document can meet them (i.e. is not infringement under fair use):
-
purpose: don’t profit by exploiting the copyrighted material
-
nature: the work you are copying is factual (less protected)
-
amount copied: copying all the rules is “reasonable and necessary in light of its intended use” but only copy what you need and not stuff like the cover page or any artwork or formatting
-
market: current rules are free so no financial impact to copyright owner
Of course, you have to acknowledge the original copyright. Other than that, I see no reason why you cannot freely distribute the document you described. Would it hurt to ask for permission? No. Is it required to avoid legal entanglements? NO.
I had taken a looong break from G40 since I’m working on my PhD (Computer Science). This summer, I’m doing research so can schedule my time any way I want. I have time to play a few games with my group so went looking for the latest rules. Like you, I was frustrated by not being able to get all the latest info on the game in one document! I urge you to reconsider and publish your document once it is done. I would be glad to help out in any way I can.

RE: The Japan Playbookposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Wow - thanks guys for taking the time to post such details.
Based on your feedback, I’m thinking declare on J3. Time to get loaded transports and air support in position. It’s possible to declare on J2 and go for Philippines and Malaya. But isn’t waiting to J3 better if I am A) more prepared, and B) if UK or Anzac DOW turn 2 that puts the US out until turn 4 which would be great.
Other points. Game is low luck. My intention with Russia was for one turn only, with potential for gaining IPCs up north without spending too much more. US1 saw a transport, carrier, and tac go in at Eastern US so no disruption to sea lion coming that way.

RE: The Japan Playbookposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
@Cow:
Sino Russian opener. This is for players that like waiting till japan 3 to DOW on western allies, because if you are going to wait to dow on western allies until j3, you may as well clear out china and russia while you wait.
…Oh yeah you don’t need to bring the xports up top if russia stacked 10+ units on amur, you just kill it and do the usual J2 DOW
In the game I’m playing now, on G1 I did the sea lion/feint opener. UK scrambled and lost all 3 fighters. So now I’m serious about sea lion. Meanwhile R1 ended with 16 inf in Amur and 2 in Siberia. It’s not that I “like waiting” to do a J3 DOW, but this situation seems ideal for not doing a J1 DOW to delay US.
I took Amur, dropped an inf and tank in Soviet Far East, and for non-combat move tried to set up for a J2 DOW based on your snippy.png pic.
This is the 2nd time I’ve played Japan so, if you happen to have some free time on your hands  , I have two requests - would you please post:
-
more detail in the Sino Russian opener, including when Russia stacks Amur with 10+ on R1?
-
the “usual” setup for J2 DOW (cmon, here’s a reason to finally update that opener in the playbook :-D) Besides, I couldn’t find any J2 DOW setup via forum search.
THANKS!

RE: Germany playbook: overall strategy guideposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
@Cow:
Carrier is better because you want the naval unit to attack with in case UK repair his airbase (then you have two battles to do, the potential scramble as well as UK).
Understood.

Nicely planned out to reduce the max stack size. Now, with the right mounting hardware (and a large enough wall :-)) you’ll be able to display a game as artwork!

Even at a cost of 15, I guess I’m still interested in comments on an AC vs. airbase buy to save the battleship.
Thx

RE: Germany playbook: overall strategy guideposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Never mind! I temporarily got the airfield (cost 15) mixed up with minor IC (cost 10).

Keeping everyone involved in the game while speeding it up is a win-win.

Super cool! Besides a bump messing up a game, are the magnets strong enough to stick if the board goes vertical?

RE: Germany playbook: overall strategy guideposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
I’m working from the sea lion/feign G1 and wondering about trying to save the German battleship in z110 for bombardment and added TT protection for a possible sea lion. What about an air base on holland end of G1 instead of buying an AC in z112? Then land some fighters and/or tacs there for scramble.
BTW, another vote to sticky these playbooks.

RE: Optimal German path to Moscowposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
This is helpful. I am just starting a game as Germany and will make a DoW on Russia turn 2. This is the first time we have played with NO’s and that changes the dynamic. I am thinking of taking the southern route for the 2 IC’s and options for the Caucases NO, possibly the Persias/Iraq NO, or possibly helping Japan with India. We’ll see how it goes…

RE: Can Russia survive? (Alpha +3)posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
@Cmdr:
Honestly, what would have helped Russia is an immunity to invasion by Japan unless Russia first declares war on Japan. (Russia would be treated as neutral territories on the Pacific map which means American, British and ANZAC troops could not stage through Red territories until Russia DOWs Japan.)
That would assure the Russians of 13 IPC and they would not have to leave a blocking wall behind - so they could walk those far eastern units to the German front if need be, or they would have the choice to leave them and use them against Japan. And it really does not hurt Japan much that I am seeing, any Russian incursion is usually at the end to push the Germans over the top for the win, or at least that is what I am SEEING in the games have looked at so far.
Makes a lot of sense.

RE: Can Russia survive? (Alpha +3)posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
So, to sum it up, if you play with NOs and Germany is on the offensive and going strong, Germany will get extra money from the NOs while Russia will NOT.
If you play without NOs, it may even the game out a little and give Russia a little better chance against Germany.
By the way, I know you are asking about Russia vs. Germany, but playing without NOs will really hurt Italy. For the first few rounds, more of their income comes from NOs than territory.Exactly what I was looking for. Thx!
