    • German Baltic Transport Build

Assuming 1 bid unit to Libya and 1 to Ukraine, has anybody tried building 2 transports for the Baltic and 8 infantry on Germany 1? One of my friends and I have tried this opening and it looks like a very strong opening. It will prevent the UK from using its starting air power to kill the Baltic navy and allow Germany to funnel large numbers of units to the front.  It also forces a large ground unit build on UK1 as there is a ligitimate threat for a Sea Lion attack.  It isn’t feasible to block the navy in the Baltic because up to 6 figs can be stacked in France.

I have a few questions about this opening:

      1. How do the Allies counter this move without leaving themselves too weak in other parts of the world? Britain can easily defend against the Sea Lion, but will give up ground in Africa.

      2. Would it be worthwhile to add anything else to this navy, like maybe a carrier turn 2 or 3?

    • RE: Is an R1 attack on Germany's navy a good play?

I think it is too great of a risk to put the Russian aircraft at, as I will agree with axis_roll that they are some of the most important units in the game. However, I don’t know of another good way to discourage a German Navy if that is your goal.

    • RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A

I just have a quick AA gun question:

If Russia attacks a German territory with only ground units, and that territory has an AA gun, can Russia move the AA gun in there NCM that turn since it didn’t fire?

      Thanks

    • RE: Best Scenario For Beginners

In '42, having Russia be an experienced player is ok. However, in ‘41, a good Russian player can destroy a newer German player. If you were going to play 41’ with a group of 3-4, I think the better player should take the U.K., as that is a difficult country to play well due to being spread out and losing so much income.

    • RE: 1941 New Turn Order: China goes before Japan

Funcioneta is right: China should be stronger, and should have the barrier removed. I’ve been wondering what would happen if if China had the 1942 infantry setup in both '41 and '42, and then had the Flying Tiger in Sikang. I’m not sure if that would fix the issue, but I intend to play it sometime in the near future.

    • RE: ALL SUBS FOR USA??

I can think of much more useful things for the U.S. to do with their money then all subs. They need to make a little bit of everything: carriers, fighters, subs, a bomber or two, transports, ground units, etc. Subs should just be an aspect of your strategy, not your whole strategy.

Subs are only useful when combined with other units. They help prevent carriers moving too close to your islands or fleet, but they will not win you the game. In the event of an all sub build, Japan doesn’t have to worry about defending their islands, and can build a few destroyers to stop your all sub build. Japan can quickly thin out your subs by attacking them with 1 destroyer and as many air units as will reach. Unless you think anybody would move the IJN within range of a bunch of subs without being able to survive an attack.

    • RE: What power is your favorite to play?

I chose Germany, Italy, and Russia.

Germany because it is the country I played in my first ever game of Axis and Allies (which was Revised). I enjoy playing cat and mouse with Russia, and trying to keep them occupied to allow Japan can land the final hit to Moscow. And being able to take Moscow as Germany just gives me a sense of satisfaction.

Italy because they are always underestimated but can be a huge factor in the game with being part of a 1-2 or 1-2-3 hit on Cau or clearing the way for German tanks. That, and I just like bombardments…

Russia because you have a very clear goal: survive long enough to make a counter attack. You have to be very smart about what you build, since Russia is almost always the center of Axis aggression. I like building up a solid defense, and then shifting to an attack once the Western Allies can drain enough of Germany’s resources.

    • RE: AA50 Tips & Tricks

I could see the “Persian Plunge” as working some of the time. What it has going for it are that as the U.K., you will get to see a couple of axis turns before you start the strategy.  If it seems viable, then go for it.  I don’t know how often it would work, but I like the dual purpose of stopping Japan and giving the U.K. a chance of retaking Egypt at some point in the game.

    • RE: Analytical Help

Crossover has some good info to look at. I agree wholeheartedly on skipping on buying an Italian bomber and I like his G1 attacks. Bst is a very hard territory to secure first round, so I have lately been taking it lightly and focusing my troops in the south.

Russia having 45 IPC’s is going to result in Germany losing a lot of ground. If you don’t have troops on the front trading everyturn and attempting to hold the line in Russian territory, you will soon have a mountain of infantry with a few offensive pieces able to advance and fending off counterattacks.

I think a +1 to Crossover is in order for his incredibly useful post  :-)

    • RE: A Bid For Allies

Yeah, that’s what I meant. It would function as a limited lend-lease. However, it would probably take about 4 turns to get there unless you have a strong naval presence in the Pacific. In the 42 scenario, that might be ok, but it’s too late in 41.

The best option may be to move the Flying Tiger to Sikang in the setup. Then it will actually have a decent impact on the game.

      @rockrobinoff:

i like the flying tiger idea. how about instead of paying directly for it, the USA has to actually fly a plane and land it china?

Why didn’t I think of that?

It’s too late for me to look at all of the games. As Corbeau said, you must protect your attacking pieces. I think a good idea is to build up an infantry base first, and then add attacking pieces. Attacking pieces can move faster than infantry (except artillery), so you will have less problems with exposed tanks if the infantry have a head start.

    • RE: A Bid For Allies

I think it makes sense. The U.S. can provide support to China, but they have to actually get the fig there.

Maybe both options could be included. Pay 15 to have it placed with China’s new infantry, or pay 10 and have to move it there. Limit one Flying Tiger at a time.

    • RE: A Bid For Allies

Yeah, there is a limit of one, sorry if that wasn’t clear. Either that, or if the U.S. can fly a fighter into a Chinese controlled territory, it comes under Chinese control when they place their units. Again, there is a limit of one Flying Tiger.

Or to keep it alive at the start, the Flying Tiger could start in Sikang.

    • RE: A Bid For Allies

What if we let America rebuild the Flying Tigers for an increased cost, and they would be deployed when China places their infantry? Somewhere in the 12-15 IPC range seems about right. That would certainly give China a chance to hold off the Japanese.

    • RE: Heavy Bombers…...AGAIN!!

I think that LRA may be worse than HB in most situations, so I always dread seeing those.  If Germany gets them, the U.K. has to hang back and build up, and the U.S. can’t easily use SZ1.  If the U.K. gets them, Italy’s navy will be easily killed.  I think that tech may be the most unbalanced in the game.  Doesn’t help that I’m having a bad experience with them in a forum game right now

IL, would you happen to have another that you would be willing to sell, as I too am looking for a copy.
