Argh, ok in the pacific game japan needs to take and hold 6 VCs to win.
In europe axis need 8 VCs to win.
      In global a combined 14.

How i think it should be, is it Japan gets its 6 vc on the pacific half, OR ger/italy get there 8 in Europe, game over axis win.

No, you all misunderstand.  I mean Japan alone should be able to win if they get there number of VCs in the pacific half, or germany/italy wins if they get there VCs.  So you could end up with a game where japan wins just as berlin is captured, letting the axis take the overall victory.

Is anyone else a bit disapointed by the victory conditions?  I know, personally, i’m going to have them as if either germany/italy, or Japan get there required victory cities the axis win.  This, i believe, will end the KJF or KGF strat, and is honestly what I assumed it would be.

    • RE: UK1 @ SZ 95 scenario question

Personally I think you’d be much better off simply securing the Atlantic with a surface fleet and trying to hold it as long as possible.  This would not be difficult, will deny the UK an NO, and you have a good chance at some good convoy raiding as well.  This is not to kill the UK, but to negate them as a threat.  This will also give Italy more time to get rolling in the south.

Kill all UK boats turn 1 that are around england, build an AC, DD, sub, then on turn 2 build what you must to maintain the advantage, with a few transports to keep the threat. With any luck with you stalling UK/US, Italy can get rolling and be a real thorn in Russia’s side to help you out.  A good amount of INF and plane purchasing can also be used to keep russia honest.

I mean honestly, how long would it take to knock UK down to an income of like 10?  Plus later in the game you can use that fleet in the baltic to help get troops north.  And you should have nearly double the US income pre-war, and be close to it once war is declared.

During your non combat move you may move a land unit into a pro-you neutral.  You then gain control of the territory, its income, and its units.  Air units cannot activate a neutral.

    • RE: Convoys

You must already be at war to conduct a convoy raid.  The raid occurs during the collect income phase of the nation that is being raided.  In rare cases, say for example the axis control Normandy and the allies control Spain, and both the UK and germans have a sub in SZ 105 during the collect income phase of the owners of the territories, they would both suffer the income loss.

    • RE: Pro-Allied Greece and Crete

Ok here is a better way to look at it.  Lets say the german’s occupy crete.  So the greeks are still a pro allied neutral, and if germany moves into there they will defend themselves.  However, they will not try to retake crete, which on one hand seems odd, but on the other hand, they do not have the capacity to retake crete and defend greece so they choose to defend greece.  In addition, they will not help the allies by attacking bulgaria, which also makes sense as they need to defend there land, not invade germany’s land.  On the other hand, if the allies move units into greece, they join-up and will help them to attack bulgaria with the assumption there new allies will help them defend there homes in greece.

Also, mongolia does not count with the neutral rules, they are an exception.

And lastly, as far as the neutrals switching sides if you invade a true neutral, its not like they all declare war on you, it just means if your enemy makes an effort to help them defend against your insane aggression, that they will support your enemy in the war against you.

This is an abstract game, if you want a truely detailed WW2 game play hearts of iron.

    • RE: US starts at 52 IPCs, goes to war - 92 IPCs, chart goes to 72 ???

How so?  The European allies have advantages compared to global, being the extra boats and units that can get to egypt, plus a higher income Russia, and the extra anzac dude (not that he will matter much but still).  In a global J1 war dec Japan will be facing an 80+ IPC US for the first 2-3 turns, not to mention on turn 1 he will face a 52 IPC purchase instead of the pacific only pathetic US1 buy, and an angry bear in the north with nothing better to do than to beat on him.  Add into that the fact that in global the India crush can be delayed to turn 4 thanks to the boats and sea zones, and that the US should have naval superiority by turn 3-4, and its not lookin good.

Around the time Japan manages to capture India, china should be ramping up to retake all its territories, and the US should have the home SZ blockaded.  Also while it is tempting to pump out 10 J tanks in India each turn, if UK holds and japan’s back is broken thats 10 UK tanks heading out of India each turn.  Well more like 10 UK mechs, but still.

    • RE: Battle of the Atlantic

One other fun thing is the fact that the Baltic can safely purchase subs as long as you control Denmark, forcing the UK to keep the entrance blocked off with a DD.  Even if you don’t go hardcore navy an 8 ipc ‘tax’ each turn is going to be painful for the UK, and let us not forget that italy can kill that DD with a plane on its turn with air, to allow the Uboats to escape!

Hmm, G1/2 sub buy, that could be fun actually.  Atleast till the US shows up and crashes the party  :-(

It has already been stated and confirmed that the US gets a bonus of 30 in global.

What is the big deal, no matter what those 4 inf in Greece are going to defend if the axis come knocking.  All it means if they don’t activate, is that they are only defending there homes, which kinda makes sense in an abstract sort of way.

    • RE: Fortress Malta

I don’t understand how Egypt is supposed to fall turn 2 and be held.  Italy only has 4 Infantry, 1 Artillery, 2 Mechanized Infantry, 1 Tank in range, not counting the transports.  But, there are around 7 allied boats in the area, one of which is a carrier.  UK also has 2 Infantry, 1 Artillery, 1 Tank, 1 Fighter, plus 2 more inf and an art all within 1 move of Egypt.  If Italy moves its fleet to hit Egypt it will most likely loose that fleet.  In addition there are 3 french inf on the other side that can start to gobble at italy’s heel, plus a minor factory 4 squares way, but only 1 move away by transport.  Using an existing transport 2 inf that start down there can also be in egypt on turn 2.  The only way I see Egypt falling on turn 2 is if Germany goes hardcore sea lion.  Otherwise Italy should take a little more time and build up her force so she can not only take egypt, but hold it.  Now with a hardcore sea lion, then yes you want to gobble UK IPCs as fast as humanly possible.

I would actually move down and take either Syria turn 1, or start eating the french territories and taking malta on turn 1 starting a shuck.  Syria is fun because you can move to Iraq and activate 3 free inf, plus strike at Persia/India, allowing you to surround Egypt on both sides.  You can also put a minor in Iraq and use it to keep Russia honest in the south.  If you go balls to the wall at egypt your just going to take it, then loose it, and then face operation torch on the other side of Africa on the following turn.

    • RE: UK attack on SZ 95 Turn 1

Even just assuming the carrier doesn’t take a hit, and you leave a tac and fig, or fly a 2nd fig down in NCM, italy will have a hard time killing a carrier /w 2 planes, and Germany will probably loose a few planes attacking royal navy anyway, with french backup of 2 boats that will be one tough nut to crack.  With the attack you should only loose 2 units at most on average, just loose both planes to keep the cruiser/destroyer, and carrier in that SZ, fly down 2 more figs, then move french there, and ouch, italy gonna be hurtin.  Plus you have 2 more boats from the tip of africa that can rally with them on turn 2 in another sea zone if you want.

Is there any way for Germany to kill that carrier G1?  Otherwise Italy is going to be hosed from this.

    • RE: How to counter J3 India Crush?

3 boats can get there from Africa, as can a fighter.  Also, a cruiser can go the long way around south America but way too late vs India crush.

The best thing, and I’m not 100% sure on this yet, but I’m pretty sure with the extra boats and sea zones UK will be able to do a block of some sort to prevent the India crush, or atleast force japan to use most of its navy to do an India crush.  The UK/france can get 2 more destroyers, and 1 cruiser, along with a transport (but it would be a waste) to India and its sea zone by turn 2.  That would give them with current setup 3 destroyers, 2 cruisers, plus 29 IPCs worth of boats in the sea zone.  Optimum purchase would be a carrier, and two subs.  That would give them a total of 11 hits with 24 defense in the sea zone (assuming fighters on the carrier, and they can even be ANZAC fighters).  Along with an extra 4 units in India (1 from west, 2 transport, 1 extra plane) and I don’t see a J3 india crush going off.  Granted, Egypt would fall, but that could be recovered.  And if you go with the transports being moved back, that would grant the UK an additional 4 IPCs so they could build a carrier and an Airbase on the island instead of the 2 subs, granting an additional 6 hits and 23? defense in the sea zone.

    • RE: UK attack on SZ 95 Turn 1

If you really want to be nutty as UK you can send in the AC/DD/2fig/tac/cru into the SZ, then depending on where italy moves the remainder of the fleet even france might be able to sink it.

    • RE: AAE40 G2-3 Sealion Strategy!!!

On G1 you can smash all the UK boats around england with air+subs if you don’t mind taking a few extra losses in France, and why not do it?  Now this is assuming a europe game instead of pacific, but G can easily meet the US’s income by eating neutrals and France.  Add to that the Italians beating on the UK, plus the convoy zones, and the distance from russian factories, and I think you could atleast starve out the UK as a viable strat.

    • RE: AAG40 balance Poll

Nah, france can be smashed with ground units, from my count germany has
6 inf, 2 art, 4 mech, 6 arm in range, allies have
7 inf, 2 art, 2 arm, 1 fig, meaning allies lose.  Even the other 2 french territories can be taken on G1 if they want, although it may force them to use a plane or two, as there is only 1 inf on one, and an inf/art on the other.

The UK has a massive fleet to begin the game with, and will almost always build a carrier turn 1, and i’m not sure but i’m assuming atleast a battleship will survive.  I mean UK alone starts with 5 DD / 4 Cru / 1 AC / 2 BB / 3 Trans, that is alot of hits!  Not to mention the 4 french boats helping to shield them.  You will want to kill every UK boat on turn 1 you can, or Germany will be screwed.

    • RE: How to counter J3 India Crush?

As far as global goes, there are alot more options to stop the India crush.

      1. Hide boats in sea zones for blocking (in the left side of the map)
      2. Contribute Europe UK troops to fighting in the pacific
      3. Russian 18 INF in the north
      4. Northern US shuck.  setting up with US1 infantry buy, followed by turn 2 armor/transport/destroyers, ending with around 10 US land troops a turn into Soviet Far East on US3 and on.  I really hope to hell this doesn’t happen, but its too appealing not to do vs a japan strat that moves troops/boats south so early.  Japan will have to have a decent force in striking range of SZ 3 at all times to prevent this.

I really think #4 is going to demand japan keeps some boats up north to prevent, and I really think #1 will be capable of delaying India crush to turn 4, and japan securing it till turn 5.

Granted if larry just swaps the BB with the cruiser, Japan cannot safely take Java, which means UK can hide blockers anyway, or build fleet, to keep india crush to a turn 4 ‘going off’ so to speak.  Which will give the US a bit more time in the north, possibly just enough time to get china and northern russia to punish japan for that move.

    • Battle of the Atlantic

I’m pretty excited, and hope that it will happen, but it looks like Germany will be able to compete naval wise if she wants and force a real battle of the atlantic!  There are a few reasons I think this is true.

      1. Income.  Germany should be exceeding 50 IPC a turn by turn 3, without even counting russian territories.  Meanwhile the UK will lose income, plus have to face off against Italy in Africa or lose nearly all her income.

      2. Distance.  Russia is terribly far away, makes it harder for Germany to get to them, but it also makes it difficult for Russia to get to Germany!

      3. Convoys.  I’m not sure, but assuming most coastal territories have convoys, thats alot of IPCs to deny to your opponent!  If the germans abandon the seas, I could see the UK/US just parking handfuls of subs to raid the crap out of them.

      4. Factories.  There are alot of factories, and a good number of them that germany will control can reach a good many sea zones.  Also it seems as if UK is limited in ‘safe’ sea zones to deploy too.

What does everyone else think?  Will a naval buy be not only possible, but able to sail out and strike into the atlantic?
