    • RE: N. Korea: "War at any Moment"

      Why else would the North Koreas use a nuke? They aren’t stupid, they wouldn’t kill themselves by launching a nuclear weapon at anyone. Just becuase the cold war is over doesn’t mean the game of mutually assured destruction ended too. Therefore, the only reason for the Koreans to use such a weapon would be in self defense.

      I don’t care how long our generals have been planning an invasion of Korea, one cannot prepare for a nuclear war. If you have a large force in the open (say, in the middle of an offensive) when a nuclear device is detonated then, chances are, everyone in that force is going to die.

      I’m afraid you’re wrong, lnxduk. p. 10: “Note: Submarines are the only defending units in the game that may withdraw from battle.”
      p. 26: “Submarines are the only defending units in the game that may retreat and withdraw from battle.”

    • RE: N. Korea: "War at any Moment"

      Funny, I thought the military was supposed to hope for the best and plan for the worst. Maybe they changed that axiom without informing me. Anyway, if North Korea launched a nuke in the middle of the US offensive then nearly everything on the southern portion of the pennisula would die. What if they had two nukes, you ask? they’d probably launch it at Japan, and the US would kiss their staging ground in the area goodbye. It would take months to get our armed forces back on track, what would be left of them.
      You seriously think that the world would come to our aid if the North Koreans used a nuke to protect their national sovriegnty against a far superior invading military? I don’t think the world would do much. I believe that (hypotheticly, of course) if the US was being invaded with no chance of repeling the invaders conventionally, most people would feel it is alright to use nuclear weapons. You cannot assume that the US will have support agianst a nation just because our president has branded it a rouge state.

    • RE: And Now a Word From Our Hollywood or Politician Idiots …

      I don’t understand how anyone can take such an absolutist standpoint. To so blatantly say that it’s black and white, and there is only your one, absolute Truth seems ignorant, in my opinion. The idea of absolutism seems completely absurd and is rather dangerous.
      To be an absolutist is to lower yourself to the level of a terrorist. Those who planned an exicuted the destruction of the WTC beleived that they were fighting for the one real Truth, and that they were doing a good thing by destroying the enemy of their Truth. Our government is doing the same thing now. If you’re not with us you’re against us? Sounds more like, if you don’t believe in our Truth then we’ll make you believe by bombing the shit out of you. Why not have one Truth in all respects? Why not have one party and one religion and one language and one skin colour? (after all only one can be the true party or religion ect.) Where does the absolutism end? When do we realize that there is not a Truth, but there are truths? You can say all you want about the evils of relativism, I will always prefer it over absolutist bull.

      Indeed they can. Refer to pages 10 and 26 in the rules for more details.

    • RE: CHINA IS TOO STRONG!

      As the Japanese you cannot allow the Chinese to get out of hand, those 2 or 3 infantry every turn begin adding up and they can easily be used as fodder in a US assualt or in the defense of India. But conversely, you should not enter china in any significant way, with so many territories to defend the Chinese can stall you as long as they want; with all the forced you would have to commit to prevent the assualt from bogging down, it would not be wise, especially considering the meager economic gains China offers. Therefore, the Japanese must keep China supressed without sacrificing forces from more important operations.

    • RE: Germany first turn

      This sounds pretty risky, it might be worth a shot though just for fun. It sounds like you didn’t really take into account the fact that the British usually destroy the transport in the Baltic, or Danish Sea, although I’m not sure what sort of effect that has on the plan. With the closeness of the battle with the capabilities of that transport I’m not sure I would risk this without it.

      Ghoul is quite right. All escorts and the bomber would be lost, and only the attackers escorts would get to fire back at the defending planes.

      @ronhomo:

      I must admit, I haven’t tired the Lenningrad idea. I will try it. I am not sure how that can do much good. I don’t think the Germans can hold it too long.

      The Germans may not be able to hold Leningrad for more than I turn or so, but it does impead that Allies support to Russia and it frustrates the hell out of the Russians (I should know, I’ve had to play them too many times). By taking away the only IC that is that close to the front, whatever reinforcements the Russians bought will take an extra turn or two which can be the difference between the Germans breaking through or the front holding.

    • RE: Why don't Canadians goose step to the Yanky Doodle tune?

      @BigBlocky:

      Americans are the best at many things, more than anybody else, but y’all ain’t the best at everything. You’re like the big brother that just hates to lose.

      By the way, America is no longer the best at very many things. Just about the only thing that the US manages to do better than elsewhere any more is aerospace design and the pharmesudical industry. Otherwise, heavy industry has shifted to the third world, lumber and wheat comes from Canada (and we will soon see Eastern Europe producing bumper crops too), and high technology increasingly comes from Japan or Europe. Although the American economy may be massive it is simply becuase it is the largest trading partner for most of the world, not becuase it has a huge amount of exports. Sort of like Britian in the 19th century.

      here in the US I’m refered to as Canadian, becuase it is rather distingtive (and many believe rather hilarious). I was born in Canada to American parents and hence have dual citizenship.

    • RE: Education Reform

      Sounds like NJ has a serious problem. Something similar has just started here, we call our tests WyCAS, but fortunately I haven’t seen it affect the quality of education. The High school I go to just started an International Baccelaurate program so those of us who have decided not to drop out of it (like a good 50% of those who started it did) are almost completely focused on college prep. IB has a nice effect on my classes too, not only are most of them smaller, but I only have to deal with widespread ignorance and the most annoyingly stupid in a couple of classes. knows he’s going to get beaten for being an elitist

    • RE: Where are your ancestors from?

      My ancestors where from just about every region of Europe you can name (not counting some southern regions). On my mother’s side there are people from Germany, The Carpatian mountians (a region that was first part of Austria-Hungary, then Czekoslovakia, then the USSR, now parts are in Hungary, Ukraine, and Rumania), others from Russia (or maybe modern Belorus), and Scotland (originally migated from Ireland). On my fathers side I’ve got some French, English, and a small amount of Cherokee. My muddled heritage is more than most can handle, so I’m usually just refered to as Canadian.

    • RE: What Other Strategy Board Games Do You Recommend???

      I played my first game of diplomacy the other week (with more than 3 people that is). I was Russia and was utterly wiped out. I was forced out of the balkans during the fall of 1901 by combined Austrian and Turkish forces. As the Turks pestered Sevastopol, I struck a deal with a weak Germany (he came in a few turns late) and England to crush the combined Austro-turkish force. As England began convoying troops to the southern front he stabs me in the back. I suffered a devistating loss as the turks and English managed to make me disband 4 of my 5 units in a single round. Needless to say I was out by 1906. Highly recomended game, even if your ass gets kicked.

      Evenki National Okrug is not an abbreviation. The soviet union created several okrugi, essentially nearly autonomous states for people of varying cultures, kind of like indian reservations in the US.

      The Japanese are way too weak for them to hold all of those little islands. It sounds like you’re going fo the Main islands (Japan) too soon. You can stall the Japanese for a while by reducing their income, then the US has time to build an invading force.
