1940 needs an “all in one” 3rd Edition with a better rule book as well as significant adjustments to unit profiles, victory conditions, and research and development (plus more).
2nd edition without an upgrade kit was a slap in the face to those of us who bought 1st edition. Luckily between HBG and this community I was able to fill out my set. Without that, the choice would be to play with sub-par makeshift units, or else shell out $200 USD +tx for a few plastic AAAs. Not a peasant dilemma.
Yes, agree 100% - a 3rd edition that is backwards compatible with 2nd would be most appreciated.
A bid is used to help balance the game to more “even” odds of either side winning. In my opinion, 1941 favors the Axis, so to play Allies, you could bid for it. Say one person starts the bid at 15 IPC, and another says they would play Allies for 13, etc. Whoever bids lowest, is the winner of the bid and plays the Allies in this case.
They then get to use their bid as additional units they can place on the board at setup. Usually the bid requires the country to already have units in the space. You can search these boards for more discussion/rules concerning bids.
Try adding a “bid” for the allies, or putting a bomber in Moscow. I think it would help balance the game more as well.
Agreed, need and want are different. From what I gather, they only waited about 3 years between 1942.1 and 1942.2.
It’s nice to not have to house rule too much - even using a bid implies some additional play testing would have been beneficial. But to be able to discuss strategies here, etc, requires us to have the same rules. :)
One that is more consistent with the Global 2nd edition rule set? Ideally these games would be self-consistent with as many core rules the same as possible, but that build on the simpler versions.
Maybe there is one in the works, but likely will be a few years before it is released.
Really appreciate all the input on this topic. Just to answer a few questions, my kids have played Risk, and are actually pretty decent at chess.
They didn’t do great strategically with 1941, but seemed to understand the game mechanics for the most part. I realize it will be a while before they can come up with a good game plan, so appreciate the advice to not push them into it, which may turn them off from the game.
I do own Classic (which I played quite a bit back in high school/college days). Personally, Anniversary seems more interesting to me, but I was willing to give 42.2 a shot if it would help the transition to Global. I think I may end up going Classic -> Anniversary -> Global, but will take it slow… Thanks for the tips!
I’ve purchased Global 1940.2, but realized it’s going to be too overwhelming for my kids to learn.
We played 1941 a couple times over the Christmas break, but I’m wondering which would be the best intermediate step for them before going Global - AA50 or 42.2 (or other - I have seen 42.1 being sold fairly cheaply)? Or should I try to just do Europe or Pacific 1940?
They are still elementary schoolers, so it will be a few years before we get to it. :)
I really enjoy 1942.2, but it would never occur to me to buy it if I already had Spring 1942. Just get a sharpie and draw a line separating out Algeria, Sudan, and Malaya! Presto, instant “upgrade”.
Is this really the only difference between the two versions? (Aside from the AAA units and rules/setup I assume)
I am looking to save a few bucks, and it has occurred to me that if I buy the map and rule book I can play this version with chips and sculpts from my other sets.
My question is: Can the A&A: 1941 game board fit nicely into a 1942 (1st edition) game box?

Just pice up this game. I was wondering what people have found to be the optimum number of players, and for >2 players how you divide up the countries.
I’d like to teach my kids to play, but would like to use as many of the modern rules as possible. I only have the Classic version, but would pick up Spring 1942 2nd if they liked it. Was thinking playing with the latest rules would make the transition less confusing.
Has anyone developed a rules that works reasonably well? The obvious one which would not work are subs, as Classic has no destroyers.
