      Incredible!

      Yeah, crazy comebacks happen like that. I don’t I’ve had one that momentous, but it’s nice to see others who did.

      @Black to further expand, a player cannot attack a land territory with a non-enemy unit.

      This happens not uncommonly when Italy declares war on Russia and moves into a territory. Germany does not declare war and marches their units into the newly captured Italian-owned territory. When Russia wants to attack, it cannot just attack the Italians, it must declare war on Germany.

      In a Europe 1940 game, I’d say probably not. The game with the USSR is balanced, so it take some serious bad luck or differences between the Axis and Allied players for Germany to lose.

      In Global 1940, with Japan, it’s not even close. Axis likely win 100% of the time.

      Might be fun though.

      @Krieghund Thank you for the swift reply. I don’t think that thought crossed my opponent’s mind (we usually play Global, so the idea of attacking Germany…and leaving oneself open to counterattack…is not on the radar).

      Zombies is a different game.

      I only ever played 1941 before this game, and the main difference (besides the politics and others) is the fact that China can rebuild itself.

      I agree with what you say about industrial complexes, and besides building some in mainland Asia, there are few areas in Global 1940 (only Egypt, any continental European territory for the Allies and I can’t think of any others for Italy and Germany, maybe Yugoslavia).

      I only see industrial complexes built a lot in side switch versions, such as this:

      https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/topic/37369/what-if-the-soviet-union-joined-the-axis-and-japan-joined-the-allies-well-really-japan-erupting-into-an-imperial-civil-war?page=1

      This was one of my first posts, and there’s lots of discussion about other house rules as well.

      If it’s not said there, when ANZAC sailed and captured a lot of territories in the Middle East they built quite a lot of industrial complexes, which the Soviets then captured. Allied Japan also built a major industrial complex in Korea, a death sentence for the Soviet Union. Still wishing to play this version again sometime.

      I hope your Global 1940 game goes well!

      I finished the game today. The Axis lost. I played against myself and I played only Europe 1940, and it took at least 15 turns (I didn’t count percisely).

      It started off well at first. Whilst it took two attacks by Germany to allow Italy to capture Paris, Operation Sealion was successfully and quickly undertaken, whilst Italy destroyed the British armies in Africa and moved into the Middle East. However, the US was able to successfully liberate London, and the German response to a Soviet attack was less than hoped for, resulting in a stalemate of 10 turns over Eastern Poland and the Baltic States, with the furthest the Axis going were Kiev, Leningrad, and Minsk. The Italians made a mistake of not building industrial complexes in the Middle East, leaving limited forces for a southern front which eventually ran out after capturing Stalingrad, Baku, and Rostov. Despite an initial income advantage, the Axis could not break the Soviets. The Americans then landed in Spain and Portugal, and the extra troops from the neutrals only delayed the eventual break. The Italians did well keeping the Americans away from Paris, but without reinforcements, the Italians made bad moves and the newly revitalised British from Union Of South Africa moved quickly northward, just as the Soviets overran the Middle East. In crucial moments, the Americans captured Rome twice, taking at toll on the Italian economy even though it was liberated both times. The Americans then broke out, liberating France. These IPC losses allowed the Soviets to push into Romania and the Balkans, with Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Albania, and Hungary falling soon after. The Soviets also entered Europe from the south through Turkey and Greece. Paris was recaptured twice after liberation, before both Rome and Paris fell out of the grip of the Axis. Amphibious Allied landings and a lack of reinforcements caused Norway, Denmark, Western Germany, and Holland Belgium to come under the control of the Western Allies, with Germany finally being squeezed to Berlin, which fell under a heavy American onslaught (13 tanks and 2 infantry).

      Overall, both sides has similar luck.

      The Cold War situation is interesting: Whilst the Western Allies control all of Germany, Africa, and South America as well as more than half of Poland (the part that Germany conquered in 1939), the Soviets still control Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Finlandization still happens, whilst Soviet reach stretches across Sweden (a problem for the Baltic Sea), the Middle East (hopefully Indonesia plays nice with gas prices), and Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, and Turkey (the Soviets gain a powerful connection to the Mediterranean and amphibious landings on the Crimea are no longer viable). This will pose a problem on Mediterranean shipping a Churchill feared, but at least there won’t be any problems with the Red Sea as the British control Yemen, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. The Soviets are quite close to the Suez Canal and dominate the Persian Gulf (controlling all of Iran, Kuwait, and Iraq), though. Soviet control of Afghanistan and Eastern Iran makes an invasion of India likely.

      With these two disasters, you might want to change your strategy.

      Don’t forget as well that if the British send blockers to sea zones 96 and 98, the transports won’t be able to land troops in northeast Africa.

      I don’t. I’ve never tried it against another player yet.

      I do agree though that as the Axis you should look for opportunities in tough/actual games (as in, not against yourself).

      Hi again Black. Half the fun is learning the best strategies by trying things out. Certainly more fun than reading long complex exposition on this forum! :-o However, a couple of clarifications:

      @Black:

      You wrote:

      G’s opening deployment on the eastern front, however, affords R some short term opportunities and patience may be required to consolidate an unstoppable drive on Moscow.

      Pretty cryptic (unless I’m extremely obtuse); this is one puzzle we’re trying to unravel. We’ll work on it!

      Depending on R1’s moves, G may need to pull back slightly. For example if R sends everything to West Russia then any force G can get into Karelia, Caucasus or Ukraine is at R’s mercy. It may be best for G to wait a turn and simply put everything it can into East Europe.

      @Black:

      Thanks again. German air support in North Africa will certainly help slow down the Allied invasion! Looking forward to trying it.

      Sorry - I did not mean air in North Africa - which would be a serious distraction from the Russian front. I meant sufficient air in range of whatever fleet the allies can deploy. Examples (from memory) being that fighters in France can get to the North Africa sea zone and a bomber in Norway can slow US attempts to stage naval and ground units via Canada. Initially, such placements can often be made while still being in range of the Russians. As Germany moves towards Moscow it won’t want its fighters to remain in France, but any delay in allied landings across the Atlantic is worth having.

      Psychological warfare?!  Seriously?!  :?

      Strategy sir, and outweighing what is important with what you want to do will stop all this craziness of Sealion.  German transports at Gibraltar?  Sink them for the love of France!  German airplanes in range of London?  Then build/send defenses!  Next time Germany opens up like that, you HAVE to ensure you either eliminate their assault forces or have adequate defenses.  There is nothing more important than keeping your capital.  If you’re going to look at this from the strategic point of view, you cannot make an excuse such as “psychological warfare.”

      Another thought:  you seem to be fighting Japan with Russia and Germany with the US.  Although this is not a bad idea on a limited level, I would suggest swapping these countries’ priorities.  Surely it is easy to take China with Russia, but then there will still be a Japanese navy out making havoc on islands.  Meanwhile, you give Germany way too much breathing time and ability to execute something as bizarre as SeaLion.  Consider this: defeat the Japanese navy by mostly building American ships in California; once their navy is gone, they will be able to take neither China nor the islands.  Meanwhile, Russia can be making a good fight with Germany (you stated that Russia was too weak to do this; I think that is because you were sending Russian units to China).  Of course, it is a good idea to take Manchuria with Russia, and send an American fleet to the Atlantic to help Britain.

      Remember that Berlin is only three spaces from Moscow, but Tokyo is virtually impossible for Russia to take.  In almost every A&A game, Russia has the unique advatge of being able to deploy right into Europe while the Allies cannot.  Don’t forfeit this advantage.
