    • RE: Cruisers Class?

      @knp7765:

      Actually, the UK/ANZAC cruiser is the County class.  I know the A&A Rulebook calls it the Kent, but the HMS Kent was one of the County class heavy cruisers.

      Both you and the manual are right: Kent Class was sometimes indicated as subclass of the County Class.  :-)
      I’m not sure I would call them heavy though (standard displacement 10,400; 8 inch main guns)

    • Can fighters scramble to defend land territories?

      I know an air base allows fighters scrambling to defend an adjacent SZ.
      But can fighters also scramble to defend a land territory adjacent to an Air-Base (i.e. can Russian fighter and tact-bomber in Moscow (with an Air-base) scramble to defend Smolenks?

      (from a purely logical point of view I don’t see why they couldn’t, but the manual seems to imply that fighters can only scramble on a sea-zone).

    • USSR question

      I know it is a game and not a simulation of WW2, and that it needs balance etc. but…

      Can the USSR in AA40 (either Global or Europe, either OOB or Alpha) do something like did in the actual war? i.e.: Invading Germany, or at least being able of eventually counter-attack in Europe, pushing the Nazis back… or is it reduced to the usual role in AA games of spent most of the game taking punches until Moscow is under siege (or taken) in the hope that the Americans come from the West to save the day?

    • RE: Building IC on foreign soil

      @author:

      Major industrial complexes are reduced minor when captured. The original owner of the territory may upgrade it if the territory is recaptured.

      Say I’m Germany. The US takes West Germany. Major IC there becomes Minor while held by the Americans. Then Germany re-takes it. Does Germany has to pay the 17ipc to upgrade the IC again? or does that happens automatically?

      btw: Paris becomes a Minor IC as soon is taken by Germany, right?

    • Italian & Russian units

      I’m pretty sure this may have come up alredy, but I get my AA40 today in the mail and I’m dissapointed about the Italians not having their own ‘personalized’ units (just German ones painted in diferent color).

      But what is really surprizing was that the USSR gets her own navy! What is dissapointing is that the USSR won’t build any navy in 99.99% of the games… while Italy does have a significant navy in the Mediterranean, not only in the game but in reality: while Soviet Navy could have been dealt with just British units (as was in previouse AA versions), Italy did have their own class ships. So would have been asking too much that AA40 had a Vittorio Venetto Class Battle ship for the Regia Marina (and not just a brown Bismark) instead of a Gangut Class for the Soviets?

      A SM-79 either as a Bomber or as a Tactical Bomber would have been really nice too.

    • RE: Can the US enter the Soviet Union via the Soviet Far East….

      @GrayBlaZe:

      However, the question is; "Can the US enter the Soviet Union via the Soviet Far East with ground troops on transports and/or air units flying in once it is; (1) at war with Japan and (2) the Soviets and Japanese are not at war yet, therefore still under the non-aggressive pact treaty?

      I don’t know if there are any rule about it, but if we were playing a game together and the issue shows up, I would argue the following:

      US Troops can enter the USSR via de Far East, as long as they are not engaged in any hostile activity against Japanese forces.
      i.e.: if for some odd reason the USA wants to reinforce the USSR via the Far East, in order to get to Europe from there (long walk from Siberia to Moscow though), well, that’s ok.

      But, if the US is trying to use Soviet territory as a base to attack Japan, that would be read by Japan as an act of war from the USSR. So I would say that the USSR is declaring war against Japan by doing so.

      in both cases, the USSR would loose her NO’s additional  IPC

      @marechallannes:

      3. Collect 10 IPCs, once, for Soviet capture of Berlin (Germany). Theme: National prestige.

      If Zhukov takes Berlin is game over. Why even bothering about collecting 10ipc for the USSR? Building up for the Cold War?

    • RE: Speeding up the game

      I’m not sure I understand what you’re meaning.
      You mean start playing a Global Game like two independent games, one in Europe and one in the Pacific and then at some point (like when USA enters the war) melting both games together?  :?

    • Game with newbies

      My copy of AA40 (both Europe and Pacific) has just arrived, so I’ll be hosting a game next Sunday. We’ll be 4 or 6 players, but only two of us are A&A veterans. The other have played some strategy games here and there, but they haven’t played AA ever.

      I’m looking for some advice to make the newbies experience a pleasant one (I want them to come by and play again with us).
      Besides the two obvious (1) me and my friends who are veterans will play on opposite sides for balance and (2) let them win ;-) … what do you guys have any advice?

      Thinks I’m wondering about are:

      • what Countries are good for newbies to play? (I was thinking me and my friend could take Italy and the US and let the other for the newbies – Italy seems weak and not very attractive to many, the US takes long to be engaged in the war and I don’t want having a newbie player siting there bored and struggling with the Great Depression)

      • Is it a good idea go for a Global game right in the first time, or would it be better to play an Europe game first (not so long, less strategies to think about)

      • give them advices while playing or let them make their own mistakes?

      any other advice I’m not thinking about?

      thanks

      cheers!

      1. how long it takes to play the game on average?
      2. is it balanced? if not, which side has the upper hand?

      thanks so much!

    • Game Balance question

      Cheers,
      I’ve seen there are some alpha-deployment rules or something to fix biases. So, what side is the game biased towards with the out-of-the-box rules?
      thanks

    • RE: Accurate Miniature Equivalents for Custom Painting your 1940 E&P

      @allworkandnoclay:

      So I’ve started the massive task of painting my Pacific 1940 set. Because a) I love WWII and A&A, b) I have to make everything I do as authentic as possible, and c) I love self-torture; I’ve been researching what the closest equivalent piece of equipment for each faction would be. I thought this would be a good forum to post the list, as there’s some speculations as to what the Europe 1940 unit-makes will be.

      A bit of the info I got from some the older A&A rulebooks (listed under unit descriptions), but too many of those were vague or inaccurate. So using the intraweb, books, and a lot of coffee, I’ve composed this list… Note that some of the items are repeats as nations would have borrowed technology from each other. Also I haven’t started on France - feel free to post your own ideas for their units.

      I’d love to get everyone’s reactions, input, links, pics of their own painted sets, and in-general comments.

      Thus:

      Russia

      @allworkandnoclay:

      Russia

      -Artillery - M1938 122 mm Howitzer

      Katyushkas  :-D

      -Mech Infantry - M3-A1?

      no HT. Trucks. Red Army lacked of HT, didn’t have many mech infantry, had Motor Infantry Instead. “Mech Infatry” were ‘tank riders’ (literaly infantry riding on top of tanks, they used to do that a lot)

      -Tactical Bomber - Ilyushin IL-2 Shturmovik OR Petlyakov Pe-2 Peshka

      Shturmovik

      Germany

      -Tank - PzKpfw V Panther

      PzKpfw IV was the most common armor unit used as MBT by the Werchmatch though the war.

      Japan

      -Aircraft Carrier - Shinano class

      only one built of this ‘class’

      USA

      -Fighter - Lockheed P-38 Lightning

      P-51 Mustang for Europe
      F6F Hellcat for the Pacific

      China

      -Fighter - Curtiss P-40 “Flying Tigers”

      abso-fucking-lutelly!  :-D

      Italy

      -Fighter - Aeronautica Macchi C.202 Folgore
      -Tactical Bomber - Savoia-Marchetti SM.84
      -Strategic Bomber - Piaggio P.108

      where are you planning to get those ones? (I would love having some SP84 Spaviero. (note: I don’t think the Spavieros could land on a AC)
