You may be right Flashman, but it definitely distorts the map even further.  Then again distorted maps are nothing new with wrong Russian capital and poland.

Yes, the counter attack on Pearl Harbor can be successful.  Never spammed bombers before.  They seem like too much of an investment and every one I lose is $12.  Then again, I can build 4 first turn and 6 2nd turn…

I’m just hard pressed on all corners of the map right now

I get what you are saying.  But how can you say the CP will be easy to defeat when every A&A theatre or world game since revised have been pro-axis?  They have the initiative early in the game.  I bet the CP will win the majority of games in AA1914 to- Larry seems to give the German based team plenty of strength in every game.

If you want to talk about armies moving slowly through country, what about navies?  You could easily make the assumption that ships should be able to move more than 2 spaces/turn.  In fact, I think it should be more like 4.  With rail movement how can you redeploy troops several territories away, yet it take two or three turns of sea movement to get american troops across the atlantic?

Ok, so Germany attacks round 1.  Gets incredible rolls in the atlantic- 4 Subs survive (1 off Canada, 3 off England), straife the USSR to kill a few Inf, but does not take any territory.  Buys 1 transport, 1 bomber, 1 DD, 1 Inf and is talking trash about buying 8+ transports round 2.  I am not sure if I believe him.

Russia went- I took Finland out (killed 7 Inf, losing 4) and bought all inf + 1 art.  Sent 2 inf, 1 mech, 1 arm towards Iraq.  Consolidated in Leningrad and Bryansk.

Japan just did a J1! Raped my US fleet at Pearl, took Kwangtung, Phillippines, and Borneo.  Setting up for Malaya next turn.

The question is… What to do?
This is what I’d like to do:
UK: Buy all Inf for London.  Do the Taranto Raid with as much as I can muster (Maybe no aid from London).  I did bid a sub in the Eastern Med.
India: Usually I take Sumatra… Not sure now- should I worry about that?  Can’t help China too much yet-- don’t have much Money.  Hole up in India?
ANZAC:  Buy land?  Maybe a Sub?  Take DNG for the NO.
USA… ugh.  Do I spend in the Atlantic to maybe take London back if he goes through with Sealion?  Build for a Italy knockout?  Or worry about Japan first turn?

      help!

      @wittmann:

I hope that is the case, Flashman.
Have never liked how in 1940 the US can not be attacked, but by T4 have spent 200IPCs preparing for a war they were trying to stay out of.

Well, to be fair, in 1940 the US was ramping up production of war material, and once at war it goes up again.  This is sort of reflected in the US NO income.  The US does not start with all that many units and cannot effectively fight toe to toe with either Germany or Japan until after they build for a couple turns at the least.

    • RE: Opening the door for more World War One based games? Your opinion

I too, love Axis and Allies and have been playing since the early 90’s with 2nd Edition.  However, I don’t think that the Great War is nearly as popular with the populace as WWII, and I just don’t think it will sell as well.  This leads credence to those who believe that 1914 will be a single print run 'ala Anniversary Edition.

What I would l love is 1914 to be enough of a hit to where they make an "Anniversary 1914’ Edition on the scale of AA1940 with more complex rules.  Probably to look more like the “Great War” scenario on Triplea.

    • RE: What to do with the Italians

I have had games where the Brits took their med fleet to the Pacific to fight Japan; This allows Italy to run amuck- getting to the 40+ IPC/turn range.

It really all depends on the Brits.  If they do Taranto and get good rolls, then kiss Africa goodbye unless Germany helps with air.  On the other hand, if the Brits don’t do Taranto or they get bad rolls, then it may be on in the Med.

      Flashman,
I realize you are a huge advocate of rail movement, but wouldn’t the advantage be too great for the Central Powers?  As in, all the CP armies could be at one end of the continent and then the other on a different turn?  That would be a huge headache for the Allies.  You’d have to let the Allies have rail movement too-  It take France and England two turns to get to the original front (vice Germany’s 3).

Also, do you advocate changing every Axis & Allies game?  None of them have rail movement, and hence have the same problem you are describing as AA1914.  I’m playing a 1940 game right now where Germany can’t magically move its victorious West Front Army to the East in one turn- thank god or Russia would be dead!

    • RE: Best of All the A&A Games?

Agree with above posts.  This was the best A&A game in my mind.  I feel that it models WWII the best in that Japan starts with a ton of ‘stuff’ but the USA is gonna roll you eventually, so you’d better get your victory points in to get to 22!  Balance is less of an issue if it is supposed to be unbalanced- only bid is in the # of victory points needed.

Plus it was fun having huge Navies, Naval task forces, etc.

I also like the UK revenue splitting between ANZAC and India- by far the best method of playing the UK.  Wish it were implemented better in the world versions.  (As in… why have an ‘ANZAC’ player if no ‘India’ no ‘Canada’ no South Africa’?)

    • Ottoman Empire

I think of all the powers, the one I’m most excited to play is the Ottoman Empire because it is new, and in WWII Turkey is Neutral (not to mention little stuff happens in the mid east for much of the game).

With Africa being a lost cause for Germany, would it make sense for an Ottoman drive to Cairo?  Especially if all units must be purchased in capitals, Istanbul is the closest CP to Africa and able to reinforce by land.  Or do you think it would be better served fighting Russia?

In Triplea ‘The Great War’, I always had the Ottomans drive to Cairo.

    • RE: Is Germany screwed?

Well, Germany certainly will buy Infantry every round so there will be reinforcements every round.  This isn’t Global 1940 where you are buying Mech/Arm with Germany.  The route could be different, but likely
      Berlin -> Hanover
      Next turn could hit/reinforce:
      Kiel, Ruhr, or Alsace

Or you go Berlin -> Kiel -> Ruhr

In the East of course is easier: Berlin -> Prussia/Silesia -> Poland

So, yes it takes longer for a specific purchase to make it there, but you will have 50%+ unit Purchases in each Territory between Berlin and Western Front.  The amount you split your forces between East/West/South is the key.

    • RE: Are you going to buy it?

Just one copy-  I don’t get to play A&A in person all that often and I have every version except the old NOVA, 1940 2nd edition, 1942 2nd edition, and 1941 (why would I buy that?)

    • RE: Response to a G1 Barbarossa

That’s definitely good advice, except we don’t have a Russian Bomber- our bids are usualy 8 or 9 for Allies.  How do you get Somalia/Tobruck with Russia?  That’s a lot of turns away.

    • RE: Can Egypt be saved?

True, if germany commits significant support to the Med then Italy can get Cairo.  To be honest I haven’t seen that happen very much in my games.

    • RE: AA40G-2e, VS-ALPHA+3, ETC

Use 2nd edition setup and the 3.9 player aides(if you want them, not necessary to play)

The Alpha setups were for playtesting… have now morphed into 2nd edition.

In my experience, Germany is attacking Russia Round 1, so no it doesnt make sense to send any forces to Scandinavia.
