Thanks Krieghund for posting this.  It is very insightful.

Two comments/questions:

1. It is frustrating to not get any insight into what you think of 1914 or any game because you are a respected voice here.  I understand that you would not want to speak of such things if you are party to NDAs, it is still frustrating.

2. Ok, so these groups that playtest the games.  Do you get the ‘battle reports’ from the other groups?  Say, one group tries a new strategy that you hadn’t thought of or something?  Or perhaps you misinterpreted the rules and could see how other people play?

Besides which, no one who went to college in the States says “I went to the University at Stanford”, or “I went to the University at Harvard,” or “I went to the University at (of) Georgetown.”  They say “Stanford, history and philosophy”.  Or, “I went to Michigan.”  Or, “Georgetown, political science and economics.”  Or “MIT.” Or “I went to college at CalTech.”   Or “I went to school at Minnesota.”  Saying “I went to the University at Indiana” is just… weird.  I mean, maybe they’d say “I went to school in Bloomington,” to refer to Indiana, but I’ve just never heard of a formulation where someone says “I went to the University at Indiana.”  That’s just… not colloquial usage.

Besides which, that’s not what you said.  The original text of the message you sent me read “University of Stanford.”  The simplest, easiest, most common sense to read that is exactly how you typed it.  That you went to the University of Stanford.  Which isn’t a thing.

I say I went to the University of Texas at Austin.  Am I saying it right?

Anyways- BJ, you are asking the right question - which is when does it become a crime?

I think it can be safe to say we are at war with Al Qaeda (sp?) and other extremist terrorist groups.  Now, it is probably difficult to determine just who is in what group.  Anyone willing to strap a bomb to their chest and commit mass murder scares the bejesus out of us.  You cannot wait for the act to be done before the arrest.

Well it’s like this…

People are being condemned to death without a trial, based more on actions they ‘may’ to do, as opposed to actions they have actually done.

And the bigger problem is that other innocent people die alongside the individuals during the strikes.  (Little Kids for example.)

Ask yourself these things….

Is pre-thinking a crime a crime? And is the sentence death?

Are we allowed to throw some innocent lives away if it means more innocent lives will be spared?

What is a human life worth?  Are they all equal?

If what you are saying is true, then of course it is horrible and wrong.  I was of the mindset that it is still a warzone.  You don’t arrest enemies shooting at you or planning to shoot at you, do you?

Taken another way, when does planning become a crime?  For instance, when would you arrest the 9/11 bombers?  When they planned the attack in Saudi Arabia (or wherever they did)?  After they took flying lessons?  Once they boarded the plane with boxcutters?  When they killed their first person?  Or after they slammed into their targets?

Human lives should be equal, yes.  It is difficult to value the lives of people who want to commit mass murder such as 9/11 or your typical suicide bomber.

Well, I don’t entirely disagree with you guys, but:

Is 9/11 not like Pearl Harbor?  Was it not a surprise attack that spurred us into war?

I believe the stated purpose of going into Afghanistan was to stop the terrorist training camps, which the 9/11 attackers reportedly went to.  Not sure what moral reasons you are talking about.  I suppose it is morally right to try and leave the place in best of shape as possible.  The place is already a better place in some respects (women’s rights come to mind.  Now they can go to school).

Typically, assassinations are for political reasons.  I guess I don’t see how every time we kill a terrorist it is an ‘assassination.’  Are we not supposed to kill terrorists?  Maybe they will play nice and not attack us, right?

I am curious how you think drone strikes are conducted.  Admittedly, I don’t know for sure, but in my ten year military experience, we only rely on facts.  It seems to me that known terrorists make a ‘watch list’ and when one of their locations is found a drone strike is conducted.  They aren’t going out everyday and killing every brown person they see.

Yea just like the Schlieffen Plan, which was just an operational plan or study. Nothing more. Barbarossa was another “study”.

More like intentions in case of war and not innocently “training”. Comparing the plans of Stalin and those of the United States with the intention of saying these are innocuous “training” missions and nothing more is shallow reasoning. Stalin was just as corrupt as Hitler. He wanted to attack everybody if he had the clear advantage. It is a bit of the thinking Chamberlain had in 1938 and look what happened.

We practiced spying and firing tomahawks at Waikiki on the Submarine.  Isn’t that similar to planning for higher level staff officers?  Practicing their art?

The other advantage in pushing into China is you can then hit Russia that way instead of slogging through Siberia.

If you are hitting Russia’s underbelly turn 6-7 and Germany is at the gates of Moscow, then Russia is likely done.

Well, maybe I’m alone in liking the Alpha process for 1940…  It allowed extensive playtesting by A&A lovers everywhere to come up with a fairly balanced 2nd edition.  My only gripe is there’s no ‘upgrade’ or ‘expansion’ pack to buy for those that had the 1st edition instead of buying all new games.
