    • RE: Map for 1941 axis strategy

      i once had the crazy idea to just go for moscow or caucasus
      turns out russians are to strong
      so, barbarossa doesn’t work
      still hate it
      makers should of leats gave it a chance

      (plan was: attack east poland with troops of poland, ukraine with bulgaria and 2 guys you ship from africa
      perhaps assault baltic states with guy and canon with transport, and 3 fighters. Bomber and another fighter take down with 2 subs the sz 12 fleet. Second round i would unite eastern front at eastern ukraine, together with tank from france, who can now reach. problem is: russia wacks those troops all the time. anybody who can improve the plan?

    • RE: My KJF Strategy

      @Rammstein:

      Hi all

      I just want to say that what bothered me the most about previous versions of A&A was the KGF strat and the fact that Japan had to go for Moscow while the US ignored her. There was very little action in the Pacific theater. AA50 is by far the most viable version to allow for a Pacific war.

      My strategy is very simple, and could probably be tweaked here and there for efficiency. I’m not getting turn specific here because the strategy is fairly open.
      This is how I played it though:

      1. Russia does what it always does, survives as long as possible. I mostly buy infantry and withdraw as Germany advances. The idea is to build up as much defense fodder as possible for the ultimate defense of Moscow. In fact, when I played it I never attacked German troops once.
      2. The UK buys nothing but fighters and sends them to Russia. I borrowed this idea from AA Europe where my friends and I would buy nothing but fighters as the Allies and send them to Russia. If Germany’s tank stack could not crush the Russian infantry/fighter stack in Moscow she would run out of steam and Russia could spring forward. Try to hold off Italy in Africa and Japan in India as long as possible.
      3. The USA goes all out on Japan with everything it has, including all the east coast stuff.

      At first I tried this strategy in 1942 but I found that Germany was too strong and could defeat Russia quickly. Russia doesn’t have enough fodder. In 41 Russia has more time to retreat and build up reserves. Plus the Allies start with their full incomes, which allows the UK to purchase 4 fighters on UK1 instead of 3.

      My main problem is how to defeat Japan with the USA. I know that eventually it can be done, but I want to know the most efficient way of doing so. I’ve heard several people say that it’s a cakewalk, but I disagree. I find in either 41 or 42 that Japan is so damn strong naval wise. She has so many fighters that buying cheap carriers drastically bolsters her naval defense. The USA has to spend more IPCs to match this power. I also found that by the time USA liberates the 4 IPC islands etc that Japan is hardly affected because she is deep in Asia at this point. If anyone has a strong anti-japan strategy for the USA I would be very interested to hear it.

      My strategy may not be perfect, maybe the UK would be better off landing troops in Europe? BTW I never play with techs or NOs as i feel they could unbalance the game too much in favor of the Axis. I haven’t tried NOs with this strat though, so who knows…
      Has anyone tried this idea yet? I’d love to hear other KJF strats, or just how to defeat Japan as USA alone.

      Thanks

      PS. One thing I like about AA50 for the Allies is that the Axis starts the turn order in 41 and 42. This allows the Allies to maximize their efforts and exploit Axis errors. If Japan thought the USA was going to go all out against her and bought warships on J1, the USA could see that and merely choose to ignore her.

      i prefer 42 for KJF
      cause then you can put IC on those 4 IPC islands
      and there, japan is actually beateble
      Russia is also in offense first round, so germans have to withdraw a bit, which gives russia a bit more breath.

      yeah
      cause, if a sub is not submerged, why can’t it soak up hits?
      technically, you can make a battleship aswell not able to soak hits, or let the enemy pick your hits!

      @jeffdestroyer:

      UKR is a red territory for both scenarios.  If Italy takes it, then they will own it and collect IPC’s

      The 42 scenario does not change the starting ownership.

      nono
      i think if italy takes it, it turns german

      in a game, british attacked my german fleet

    • RE: Axis can't win? IMO Allies can't win.

      without NO’s?
      wel, agreed, Japan is a pain in the ass
      but germany and italy get nothing!
      nothing!
      if US lands in france, and UK at baltic staes, karelia, poland, northwest europe, the germans can’t beat them back
      then they get at max 10 inf each turn
      the same for italy
      berlin falls much sooner than moscow

      with NO’s
      it’s 50-50 i think
      (perhaps with a small advantage for axis, also depends on KJF or KGF)

    • RE: Am I the only one pissed that this has turned into a KGF?

      in 1942 KJF is possible, with and without NO’s
      biggest problem with KJF isn’t japanese navy, but german panzerwaffe
      if they take moscow, allies are pretty fucked
      UK should fix on germany, and be in the baltic sea

      btw, your text
      hmm……
      i agree, but i wouldn’t of been better
      instead of gulags we would of have death camps
      not big difference
      but atleast with gulags, western europe was free
      i still blame the US for not taking more of germany and the balkans
      for the same context, i do honour the brits

      @Imperious:

      yes and yes

      i disagree
      i think originally controlled territory is an orange one
      the 2 chinese territories certainly don’t countn 1941 or 1942
      (explained in the rules i think)

    • RE: KJF Strategy Feasibility?

      i wouldn’t do KJF in 1941
      i tried it once

      1. you can’t put IC with US in pacific (all turns british)
      2. germany can crush russia pretty easily
        and this was all without NO’s
        with, i wouldn’t try it

      1942, is allot better, especially with NO’s

    • RE: Options for Russia when Germany plays defensively

      @Cmdr:

      You know, I used to think the same about Russia and air, but I’ve recently been changing my mind and suggesting that Russia should wait until Round 2 before buying Aircraft and focusing on Armor in Round 1 (5 inf, 3 arm maybe, or even Inf, 3 Art, 3 Arm since you start with a lot of infantry already.)

      Reason is, if you wait a round, you can see how Germany and Japan act.  Yes, you get to see Germany 1 before Russia 1, but the problem there is that Germany might not be conservative at all, they might only seem conservative and defensive on the first round so they can be more of a threat in subsequent rounds.  Japan, of course, comes after Russia and it’s good to know if Japan’s going land grab crazy or slow and steady before committing to bombers and fighters.

      BTW, I agree that bombers are a better option for Russia than fighters.  The cost is virtually the same, the range is 33% longer and the attack 25% stronger than a fighter.  But I can also see the argument that fighters are, in reality, cheaper than bombers and those extra 2 IPC, while virtually not a lot of money, could be used to upgrade two infantry into Artillery instead of upgrading the fighter to a bomber.

      Guess it depends on what cash you have and what you need more.

      and don’t forget, bomber only defends on 1
      but how many air units should russia get?
      first or second turn?
      cause i think, weakest link in german plans is their lack of inf, while russians have a damn lot of them

    • RE: Germany Basic Strategies, Concepts and Ideas

      @Ó:

      Yes, you are correct in that notion, ships may not pass unless you’ve control both sides of the Suez Canal. However, I think that you can still pass through even if you just captured both sides on your combat phase. I’m not definite but I’m thinking it’s more than likely. Speaking of which, I meant to propose to people who wish it, that the Dardenelles (between Bulgaria/Romania and Turkey) cannot be passed unless on controls Bulgaria Romania, and that the Straits of Gibraltar (between Gibraltar and Morroco/Algeria) cannot be passed unless one controls Gibraltar. Of course this is nowhere stated in the rules, but it is more realistic historically, as Russian ships could not leave the Black Sea, and Axis ships could not leave the Mediterranean. My friends and I have agreed on this, though it curtails Italian expansion to the West, unless the Axis take Gibraltar. We thought about similiar rules regarding the Sound between Denmark and Southern Sweden, gaining or denying entrance to the Baltic, but found them unfair, as Germany could then build a massive fleet with impunity. Anyway those are simply some house rules we use, to add more historic flavor, if you like the sound of them, use them, if you think it’s a bad idea, don’t use them. Just putting in my 2 cents……

      i like the idea…

      @Cmdr:

      Okay, I stand corrected on Germany.

      I also think America should get them.  America used their airborne heavily from what I understand.  Wasn’t the entire German offensive during the Battle of the Bulge stopped by American airborne units?

      wouldn’t say entirely…

    • RE: Cutting the Italian legs out from under the axis

      @shifty:

      It seems that each time I’ve played that the Axis have won, Italy has played SOME sort of role during the course of the battle.  Whether it’s taking Africa, pounding Cauc, help against UK navy, taking islands, or just providing extra defense in EU, Italy always plays its part.

      I know that this is an IF situation and probably not original, but i haven’t seen it here in the forum so I figured i’d throw it out here.  Anyways, If Germany doesn’t attack SZ12 and the Egyptian fighter survives, I’ve found attacking the Italian fleet with the UK Cruiser, Bomber, Fighter, Destroyer severely inhibits Italy from doing much of anything the rest of the game.  I realize that the chances of success (Italy losing all units) is only about 60%, but putting them down 51 ipcs when they are only making 10 is worth the loss in units and UK makes enough early game to easily replace that loss.

      I’ve manage to try it twice and it worked both times.  After that, the other players in my group caught on and began attacking SZ12 w/subs (thus letting my battleship survive) or fighters/bomber which at least took out some of the Germany air and kept them distracted.

      i just take gibraltar and leave tranny where it started
      know, i’m no fan of egypt attack
      saw it a few times go horribly wrong

    • RE: Balancing Pacific and European theaters

      i have just completed a game of KJF in '41
      it must of been the shortest game ever
      but made crucial mistake with russians, i’m not that good in AAA
      japan can be stopped, it really can
      but problem is: europe
      i tried to put some pressure with brits on germany at the north, and with an IC in India(wich i held pretty firm) i was fighting japan
      US was liberating big IPC islands
      problem is: in 41 you need to be quick in KJF, russia holds i think 5 rounds at max
      you need you need to have achieved something by then
      '42 is of course easier against japan, but isn’t germany even stronger?
      i attack belo and eastern ukr with russia and build pure inf trying to hold the archangel-caucasus line
