RE: Anti-KJF. any thoughts?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
i’d say attacking england is a valiant strategy against KJF
try to have a solid base in mainland, keep india small and try to hold on as long as possible to carolines (works great vs anzacs in my games)
for the rest, i don’t have a great plans vs KJF -

My favorite ww1 commander is: hmmm I’d say aurthur currie.
My favorite ww1 weapon is: lee enfield smle
My favorite ww1 battle is: I’m hopping you mean most interesting, for me that would be first battle of Ypres (this was the one with first every gas attack right?)Ieper is indeed the place where germans used it the first time (on the western front)
also the start of a bombartment that would last for 4 years and bombs are still found by the thousands
gotta love our clay :P -

@Frontovik:
bulgaria, ottoman empire and austria-hungary were already out of the war at start 1918 i thought
or atleast played no more vital role.
i always wondered why the germans didn’t launch the biggest navy assault at the same moment. if either of them was to fail, they’d have lost the war anyway.
of course, it’s good that such butchering has been prevented, but it would have given the british quite headaches, as the supplies to france was already hard to maintain. The best shot that Germany got at fighting a decisive naval action against Britain was at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The battle was a tactical victory for Germany in terms of tonnage sunk, but it was a strategic defeat: the High Seas Fleet had to withdraw twice in the face of Britain’s greater numbers. Germany never again tried to challenge the British Grand Fleet. By 1918, the High Seas Fleet was in a sorry state compared to 1916, due to the losses suffered at Jutland combined with two years of inactivity. In late 1918, the German naval command planned to send out the High Seas Fleet on what its sailors correctly interpreted to be a futile, suicidal gesture meant to salvage the Fleet’s honour. The sailors promptly mutinied and the last sortie never took place.
that was after the ludendorff offensive.
but point taken ^^ -
RE: What do you do with italy???posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
@frontovik,
I really don’t know how your games go, I rarely see more then a single fighter in Egypt. Usually, as Jimmy said, Germany is threatening London(well said as always jimmy :-) ) so Britian is loathe to spend IPC’s in Africa, usually husbanding it’s resources for a major defense until America can get there or the threat to London evaporates. So taking Cairo isnt that much of a stretch for Italy if Germany is being played well.As for taking the territories in the Balkans, I think it’s better for Italy to have an economy that is easier for it to defend. Taking large tracks of Africa is good, but one major naval push by an allied player and Italy will be cut off from this income. Not that an allied player couldn’t convoy raid the Balkans, but it would be much more difficult. Italy can defend the Balkans more readily then Africa, not having to transport troops there across a potentially hostile Med.
With this secured, Italy can send reinforcments to the eastern front and “can opener” for Germany.2 or 3 indian fighters, plus leftovers from taranto do the trick
yeah, sealion can’t be stopped
even with all fighters. as germany i’d attack it round 4 then, making all that extra defense quite useless (figs for inf?) and giving italy free hand in africa…
tell me if i’m wrong, cause imo this is best thing to do as allies. -
RE: What do you do with italy???posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
a) taking a lot of territories in europe takes away money from germany, which is generally a bad idea.
b) how can cairo ever fall to italy? you guys really need to explan. i count on average 4 defending airplanes in cairo, with sufficient troops to atleast hold it against, if not counterattack, italies’ 8 soldiers…so basically, have sufficiant forces on southern italy and deal as much damage possible to the allies. that’s my plan with italy…

planes can’t land on damaged carriers? not even as cargo?
what happens to carrier that gets damaged but still has fighters on them? -

prepare for heavy british invasion starting atleast round 3…
you leave both battleships alive! -
RE: What are the best SZs for disrupting convoys?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
SZ 109 is really good, especially if you can get it with SZ 119. If Germany, or Italy, can get 4 subs in SZ 109 and 1 sub in SZ 119, you can nail England for 10 IPCs of convoy raiding even though the adjacent territories are only worth 8 IPCs (United Kingdom 6, Scotland 2) because SZ 109 borders both United Kingdom and Scotland.
lol
yeah right
if i only got 1 apple, you can’t take 2 away, so raiding 10 instead of 8 is BS hein ;) -

RE: The great warposted in World War II History
and americans were arriving, what was the reason they did surrender
also, there was a large famine in both german and austrian empire at the time (1917-1919)
No sir…not because of the arriving of American. You over estimated the US presence.
Yes the German people would starve and to avoid the uprising of the population and avoid a revolt, the German government
has decided to stop the war.i know, i know US had almost nothing to do with great war
but the prospect of a few new million doughboys did help germany sign the treaty, no? -
RE: The great warposted in World War II History
@i:
Yes they could’ve won the war in 1918 France and Italy were on the brick of collapse all the Austria and Germany had to do is hold on a little longer. The allies would have had to surender. As with the collapse of Italy and France the balkans would soon be finished and America would Lilly pull out for having nothing to gain and wouldn’t want to be on the losing side. Then Britain by her self would likely make peace for fear her people might follow France or Italy’s example.
In this senario the French empires collapsed the kingdom of Italy’s callapsed the Russian empire has collapsed. The German empires Lilly to have gotten most of there colonies back plus parts of the French colonies Austria would have more or less takin the Balkans and the ottomans would Likely still be alive for another 12 ish years.
i don’t see germany taking any colonies, neither from british or french.
in 1918, they tried the ludendorfoffensive. afterwards they were pushed back deep into belgium, with little american aid.

The great warposted in World War II History
The great war, also the forgotten war or world war1
many people discuss wether the axis could or could not have won WW2
But the great war was far closer
could the centrals have won the great war?
in 1914, and or in 1916?
it’s a far harder question ;) -
RE: What is making Alpha 2+ unbalanced?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
i like the idea of a few extra german subs in the med or south atlantic, close to african convoys…
-
RE: Thoughts on a Japanese strategy?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
have a naval base in sumatra
it’s weird little idea i really like
there, you can easily hit either middle-east or africa
(if uk is conquered it’s even possible to take south africa)
else you can still reach a lot of convoys with your subs
but of course, this is if US aims at germany (likely after sealion) -
RE: What to do with Italyposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Hmmm. So Taranto was successful for your UK player? Well, I admit, that does change things alot since you lose 2 of your 3 transports. I guess that is why I’m not getting your problem. In every game we have played of Alpha +2, the Taranto raid has never worked. Every time our UK player has tried it, he ends up either losing everything with at the very least the Italian BB and 2 transports surviving and able to take more troops where ever they are needed. Or, he will see the battle is going badly and retreat, saving some of his navy and air force but also leaving the Axis with more stuff.
Now, in some of the earlier setups, like OOB and I think the first Alpha, Britain often pulled a successful Taranto and like you said, Italy usually ends up pretty much crippled and unable to make headway in Africa. But in Alpha +2, it just doesn’t work for us. Watch, I say this and in our next game it will probably work. Wait, taranto did work once for our UK player in Alpha +2, but that was because Germany did not send any planes down. Then the Italians were slaughtered and if I remember right, still had a carrier and fighter surviving. Since our German player (usually me) started sending a couple of planes down to help out my Facist buddies, Taranto has been kaput.
Maybe your UK player is just luckier than ours? Sorry, I guess I’m not much help to you.
wtf?? taranto has yet to fail in our games, and we put 2 german fighters. on average the british have 2 fighters left. (destroying bordeaux fighter has no effect, they can use figs from london which land on the to be destroyed carrier)
fighters from india can then secure egypt for rest of the game
