    • RE: Disadvantages for starting in 1940

      @Admiral_Thrawn:

      Just got the game today. Very cool. I’m not really complaining but, does anyone else wish the game started Dec. 7th ‘41? Or had a 40’ and 41’ scenerio? It seems it would keep it simple for one thing. Not a lot of new rules about when how you go to war. The game is about war. Just cut out the first 3 rounds of the game and get to it. The games are long enough. I feel you lose historical flavor as well without the sneak attack of the Japanese. The surprise attacks was the main reason the Japanese had a silver of a chance in WWII. There whole philosophy was based around it. In the original AAP this was captured nicely with the defend on 1 rule for the surprise attack. Now we have this artifical the U.S. and U.K. just automatically go to war if not attacked. Just like the real war in AAP 41’ you wanted revenge for those easy attacks.

      Don’t count out the Brits (probably never ANZAC though) attacking Japan first! In our last game Japan had Yunan on J1. China reinforced and sat in Szechwan, so on J2 Japan reinforced Yunan with even more units, and some planes (not all). In all Japan had I think 4 inf, 2 art, 1 tank, 1 mech inf, 4 figs in Yunan, and the BRITS rolled up in there to save an early conquest of China on UK2. They blew Japan out of the water actually with I think, 6 inf, 1 art, 2 tanks, 1 mech inf, 4 figs and a tac bomber. The Brits ruined Japan! It was an exciting move, and big for the allies!

    • RE: ANZAC NO #2

      *5 IPCs (once and only once) for occupying any territory that was originally Japanese controlled.

      Though it doesn’t specifically say, (I don’t have my rulebook with me I’m just looking at the NO’s that were posted on this website’s homepage) this wording leads me to believe that it has to be ANZAC that occupies an original Japanese territory to receive this bonus.

    • RE: What's with the Rulebook?

      I didn’t notice anything substantially different about this rulebook. Compared to my AA50 rulebook its the same thing really. The two rulebooks even share font and layout and design. I like them. About the question of the link, I don’t know anything about that :(, but hey if you found a place to get the game quickly and cheaply letting your fellow gamers know about it shouldn’t be a crime. I see chat about CoolStuffInc all the time.

      I think I read that Allies win if they have control at the end of Japan’s turn, not at any time. Probably this way so Japan has a chance to retake home if they possibly can.

      You are totally right Plum, the game is not worth the money they charged. The map IS amazing, the gameplay IS really fun. But you nailed it with the boxes, paper money, IPC chart, cardboard pieces, lack of tac bombers. I mean, I paid basically the same money for this game as I paid for my copy of AA50 and this AA40 Pacific is missing lots of the quality that AA50 had.

      @Omega:

      Inevitably, Japan must dedicate a lot of her ressources into fighting or holding USA. Question is : Can she do so early in the game? Or does she needs some extra IPC from a defeated China?

      Ok, two games played now, neither finished but each about 7-8 rounds, 4-6 hours. In both games, Japan has failed to completely take China. In one game Japan attacked allies on J3, took bonuses away, took burma road for only 1 turn, ended up getting pushed back by china and UK, kept US in check though.

      In the other game Japan almost took China, had Burma road on J1 and J2, with lots of land units holding it, but Britian rode in and destroyed all the ground forces Japan had on UK2 (so UK and Anzac declared war before Japan) and it set them back big time, and China came back. UK was getting bombed to death in later rounds, but Japan was also gettingbombed to death by USA (1 minor IC in Hong Kong, 1 minor IC in Shanghai, and then in Tokyo). USA was closing in on Japan in that game.

      This game looks hard for Japan to win, imo. But I think its awesome having to plan for who would declare war on who first.

      @Brain:

      @bigopfer:

      Just read my rules book a couple times, didn’t see anything about Neutral Countries. Then I went through specifically looking for rules addressing Neutrals, still, nothing. Did I just miss these? Or what is the deal with the Mongorians?

      What are Mongorians? Some kind of gory mongrels?

      South Park episode, the town hires the local Chinese Restaurant owner to build them a Great Wall around their city to protect them from invading Mongolians. He pronounced it “Mongorians”.

      And now to page 8 in my rule book to see what I can see, thanks Krieg.

      @Shakespeare:

      We played the 1st couple/3 of turns: US evacuated the Philippines and moved the bulk of that force to Borneo, leaving behind only 1 inf. The Brits had taken Celebes and Dutch New Guinea, those moves denied those IPC’s to Japan early and now she has to work for them when the War really breaks out!

      Yes USA in our game did that exact same thing only difference was that they took Dutch New Guinea instead of Borneo. But either way, I do think its important for ether UK or USA to get Dutch new guinea for ANZAC to get their bonus 5. I guess ANZAC could get it on their turn, but we felt like USA’s small force down in south pacific was more expendable since they would be making much more money.

      Also, Wild Bill, Japan in our game bought only 2 tac bombers and 2 figs only once in the entire game, they had so many planes to start with it was ridiculous, so maybe they don’t need to waste money purchasing any until they lose the ones they start with? Of course, buying more wouldn’t hurt :)

    • Played Our First Game Tonight

      We weren’t able to finish, but wanted to play anyway. Took about 45 minutes to set up and discuss rules changes. I was ANZAC (I was suckered into the idea of a new power). We had four players for a full game. Order was Japan, USA, China, UK, ANZAC.

      Japan, which from my end looked difficult to play, started off by attacking 3 China territories and French Indo China. Thing is, they didn’t want to declare war immediately and awake the Western US Beast (IPC’s for West USA increase by 40, from 10 to 50 as soon as USA goes to war). Japan moved fleet and many planes within striking range of Australia, Phillipines, and Hawaii. Japan later took Alaska which was a good move to keep USA occupied with that, and not with helping Allies, and killing Japan. Japan had millions of planes. Built large navies, seemed like it would be their undoing, as they spent less IPC’s focused on Asia land campaign. Took most of China, declared war on Allies on turn 2 by taking Phillipines, Kwangtung, Borneo, and Celebes. Later in game built a Major IC in Kwangtung, looked scary for China.

      America built what navy they could and soon began game of cat and mouse between USA fleet and Japan’s northern pacific fleet (larger than his south pacific fleet). USA also took Dutch New Guinea allowing ANZAC to collect one of their NO’s on their turn. Had to retake Alaska. Had small south pacific fleet that got dominated by horribad rolls against Japans south pacific fleet. (USA: 1 Battleship, 1 Cruis, 2 Dest, 1 sub versus JAP: 1 Battleship, 2 Carrier [each w/1 fig, 1tac], 1 Dest, 1 Sub) Later attacked major north pacific Jap navy in Japan sea zone, got owned in the face by a million planes. Took back Celebes later in game.

      China was a thorn in Japs side the entire game. Early they were getting dominated, lost Burma Road on J1, never lost control of it again (6 IPC bonus). China took territories back, then would lose them, then take em back. Eventually crawled back to control almost what they started with. Should have been a number 1 priority for Japan.

      Britian took Sumatra, Java, reinforced Burma, and purchased ground troops. Seems good move for Britian to play a land campaign in Asia. Turn 2 had Celebes as well and both bonuses, and were making money in the 30’s. This was powerful for Brits land campaign, able to send many tanks and inf into China when war started. Held Burma Road very well. Ended up retaking Kwangtung with Jap Major IC on it. (Japan probably would have retaken it if we finished since he had many land troops nearby to recap, but he lost 6 figs and 3 tacs when he lost Kwangtung). Britian lost they small fleet to Jap south pacific fleet in an attack that failed almost as bad as USA’s same attack on the same fleet. Lost their Dutch East Indies and Borneo to Japs, retook it about same time as Kwangtung. Took SIam and French Indo China early too.

      Anzac makes destroyer, 2 carriers, sub in a few turns, finishes up the Jap south Pacific barely, since USA and UK failed miserably to do so. Lost alot in that fight and had to rebuild figs and subs, saved Carriers. Had New Guineas, Solomon, New Britian the entire game for bonus 5 ipc NO. Took Caroline Islands base later in game for 2nd NO. Retook Java late in game, highest made was 14 IPC on chart, 20 ipc in one turn only, after having 2/2 NO’s.

      My thoughts:

      Dice are crappy.
      Flimsy cardboard charts.
      No paper money.
      I liked the cardboard counters for IC’s and Naval/Air Bases.
      Liked the country containers just like in AA50, but they lacked dividers in the trays.
      The map is big and beautiful.
      Couldn’t figure out what Mongolia was for, or could do, or could suffer.
      Japan has too few Tactial Bomber pieces.
      Wish China had their own Artilery.
      Didn’t use Mech Infantry that much, and when it came down to it, would rather buy either Artilley or Tanks.
      Loved the Naval/Air bases and the movement bonus.
      Didn’t utilize convoy’s at all.
      Had no SBR’s.
      First few turns go really quick.
      We wished that the IPC’s from the Chinese territories Japan began the game with could go to whoever took them, not just straight to China. (Britian could have used them.)
      USA is a beast. Had some crappy rolls though.
      Japan burned bright and hot quickly, then faded away. Mistakes were made though.
      Britian is a beast for a few beginning turns if they get bonuses and Dutch East Indies. Looks very fun to play.
      China is weak but stubborn.
      ANZAC is weak, little navy, lots of figs, no money, and the 1 bonus NO only once the entire game is weak sauce.

      I loved the game, and I have another scheduled on Saturday morning! Next up I’m probably playing as is Japan.

    • RE: ANZAC NO #2

      Really they only get that bonus once? Thats not fun. Is that just because its so easy to get and maybe ANZAC would be a little too powerful with an easy bonus 5 every turn? I may just house rule that they can keep it each collect income phase, we’ll see. Hey, Italy gets double its income, super easily from their NO’s in AA50. Anyway, thanks for the reply!

    • ANZAC NO #2

      *5 IPCs (once and only once) for occupying any territory that was originally Japanese controlled.

      I don’t quite understand the once and only once. Does it mean:

      A) The bonus is only offered one time, for one ANZAC collect income phase, after they have control of any original Japanese territory?

      B) The bonus is only offered for ANZAC controlling one original Japanese territory, and the bonus is not offered for each original Japanese territory that ANZAC controls. The bonus is given during each ANZAC collect income phase where they meet this NO?

      From what  read my understanding would be (B). I hope that ANZAC doesn’t get screwed like that and can only get one of their NO’s just one time during the entire game. Please clarify! Thank you!

      Oh, and btw, this game isn’t out yet right? I thought it was Tuesday the 15th, but I saw someone post that they got it today and they live in Holland. (I’m in Nebraska USA). Thanks again.

    • RE: Who has bought a Russia naval vessel, what and why?

      @axis_roll:

      @bigopfer:

      Well as Russia one game, I didn’t want to be boring and do the usual things. We were in a game of 41, with tech, NO’s, and no bids. I decided, to harass the Italian navy, that I would buy subs in Caucasus to fight them. I dropped 4, and next turn hit their navy to kill it all, with one sub surviving. By the next round, the starting sub in Karelia was near Gibraltar and I had 2 more in Caucasus, finished off what Italy bought, rendering Italy useless the rest of the game, just buying infantry and ground forces to defend Germany.

      Since then, it has constantly been a tactic employed by whichever of my friends and I that are playing Russia in our games. Italy has learned to buy destroyers. (Which is a real pain for them on their first turn, since they need to defend that destroyer by keeping navy together, halting advance of capturing their NO’s)

      Wow!

      I am not sure how Russia can afford to buy 4 subs in 1941 instead of (at the minimum) 5 to 8 ground units.  It seems to me that Germany is definitely NOT getting after Russia fast enough in your game (at least in the initial rounds).

      It usually involves a heavy defensive withdrawl into russia/caucasus, abandon karelia on R1

    • RE: Russian Strategy

      @Cmdr:

      In 1941, I have found that Russia’s best option is to liberate Karelia and pull everything else back to Moscow.  Couple this with an all Armor build (or 1 fighter, the rest armor) and you are in a strong position on round 2.

      I have played 1941 version my last 2 games, and both times I was Russia. First off, I really think that 1941 is a hard fight for the allies. However, in both my games, Gibralter was a staging ground for US/UK air strikes against Italy and Germany. As Russia I played an entirely defensive strategy, stacking infantry in my big 3 and retreating all infantry from the East while Germany was stacking offense in Eastern Ukraine, Baltic States, and East Poland. On R1 I built 2 subs in SZ 16, and on R2 I built 4 subs in SZ 16, and the rest of the game continued to make subs there. These subs were a great threat to the Italian navy, even when they would build 2-3 destroyers a turn, I would make it out of my fights with 1-2 subs leftover. Italy was a waste and my huge amount of infantry in my big 3 were solid. (Germany did, late in game take Karelia, by that time I had started building tanks instead of infantry since I had so many and I liberated Karelia) In the end the Axis failed to reach Moscow by the time US and UK were in france, and Italy did nothing all game. I think subs are a GREAT play for Russia in SZ 16!

      One of these games US had heavy bombers and was IPC bombing Italy and Germany with UK Jets defending at Gibralter. The other game, Germany got Heavy Bombers, and got greedy building bombers and not enough land forces to attack/defend which was his undoing. In that game, Russia was knocking on Berlin’s door with tanks/inf.

    • Anniversary Ed. Online?

      Hi all,

      Long-time A&A board game fan here and new to the forums. Just want to know where, if any, I can find an online program to play Anniversary Edition? I ran across a post in these forums saying there were Anniversary Edition games out there, but I cannot find that post and so here I am. I have Triple A, but cannot find a AA50 version on there, unless that is what the “path of steel” version is? I usually play AA50 once a week with some buddies, and it’d be good to have some program to play around with before games. Thanks!

      Edit: I meant to post this in the A&A Anniversary Edition forum, not the 1941 Scenario. Sorry.
