    • RE: Iraq, again

I’d prefer a biased Al Jazzera over typical Mid-East state run news, and that is what we have. I’d prefer an objective Al Jazzera over a biased Al Jazzera however. Al Jazzera is new, hopefully they will establish a legacy of fair and balanced news.

However, to show a small crater and some dead people and pronounce this as an American bombing aimed at civilians is worse then just bias. First, a 500 lb bomb makes a huge crater, an Iraqi AA missle crashing to the ground is far more likely.

CNN didn’t start saying that the female POW was violated in all kinds of ways and stir hatred over what might or might not have happened. Al Jazzera would have.

It is very dangerous for the people in the middle east to paint a picture of American colonialism that is not true. I doesn’t do anyone any good except Al Jazzera getting better ratings. There are laws in the west to prevent new organizations from making blatent lies to sell papers as it were, no such law exists in Qatar so naturally Al Jazzera will stretch the truth or lie with no fear of repercussions…… except make a tense situation worse.

Tell the truth by all means, but don’t pass off personal opinion as facts.

    • RE: Iraq, again

Mr. Ghoul, I totally agree. It seems some expect Americans to wage a war that kills no civilians and yet seem to look the other way when the thugs use women and children as shields. Some might say that they are fighting to defend their homeland. Bull. Those thugs who use women and children as human shields are not fighting for Iraq and the average Iraqi.

Al Jazzera is barely showing those Iraqis that are cheering the Americans, rather they are still showing dead babies and women 24/7. I’ve heard many Arabs are angry at local media for lying to them, they find it hard to understand Iraqis welcoming Brits and Yanks as liberators while foreign governments and foreign people say otherwise. Who should you believe, average Iraqis or Al-Jazerra?

I also note that Iraqis have looted the German Embasy and a French cultural mission. It seems the Iraqis think the Franco-German Alliance was supporting Saddam and not Iraqis. Those dumb Iraqis just don’t get it…. or maybe those smart Iraqis do get it after all.

    • RE: Allied Winning Percentage???

Well, Germany could do 6 rolls say and should get 1 tech. Since they already have Jet Power they have a 40% chance of getting either ITech or HBMR. ITech would be great, bombers not so good for Germany really. Germany might be better to do 4 rolls and save 12, at least if you got ITech you could build 6 INF right away.

The bids try to prevent this ‘roll the dice to see who wins’ scenario. The axis might be better off to have Germany play the all infantry conservative ploy until a wall of infantry is built say at round 4-6. Japan should maximize it’s income while avoiding expensive trades on units, build infantry in other words then perhaps try tech big time for Japan and take the odd shot with germany. If Germany can hunker down then Japan has a few rounds where she can toss 5-6 dice and have enough left over to build a bomber right away if she gets HBMRs.

    • RE: Missiles

It might be interesting, what is the cost? My fear would be that it would make attacking a navy to easy. At 5 IPC each it makes it a 50/50 chance to knock out a transport or more.

    • RE: Allied Winning Percentage???

I don’t have independant numbers, only personal experience and the opinions of the local gang. The 90-95% number that I have often read about matches what occurs locally. It’s often been said and I agree that if the allies are controlled by more than 1 player the winning percentage goes down.

I have rarely lost as the allies when playing all 3 countries, perhaps roughly 87-3 in real face-to-face games. As the Axis I am about roughly 60-30 so it’s obvious the local players either aren’t that good or I am that good :-) Those were all played without bids. However some of the early games didn’t have russia restricted or the german jet power and jap supersub option. It was the wild west back then, I kinda miss it too!

    • RE: Cool german opening

SUD, the caucus attack with russia is key. Good disection with bullet proof defense in my opinion. But ya have to learn to slap down somebody in such a way as to elicit a thank-you from them :-)

Simply put, infantry wins games. Yes there are times to build all armour, usually after a few waves of all infantry so you can get the 1-2 punch. England can benefit from doing all infantry into finland, then lots of armour (build a good mix of infantry and armour hopefully a bit more than a full load to offer a range of transport loads), infantry move up to Karelia. The next round you have a potent punch from infantry in Karelia, armour in Norway plus an appropriate mix on the transports plus air power. However, when I do a wave of infantry then a wave of armour with Germany I almost always regret having over-built armour….

anon coward, bang on with the central limit theorem.

    • RE: Inflexible strategies=no fun?

England is always effective when I play and I never build a factory in India. One can debate the merits of the India factory ploy. However, to say that ploy is the only way for England to be effective against Japan is silly. Dropping off 6-8 infantry per round into Karelia then into moscow is a pretty effective way to fight Japan.

I’m not a fan of splitting up my countries combat force into 2 largish forces, I much prefer to have ‘scouts and feelers’ with one large battering ram. When England builds a factory in India it effectively forces England into a major forces split in my opinion, and for me, that is reason alone to shy away from the IC in India ploy. It may be effective for the playing styles of others I’ll admit.

    • RE: Russia cant attack first round

Our local group has been playing for about 10 years. Even with Russia Restricted, Germany with Jet power and Japan with supersubs the allies win 95% of the time.

If your buddies don’t want to help the axis then just insist they play the axis until they can start winning with them…… I love to play, but I love to win even more!

    • RE: How to Counter UK SBRs

England is dead without a fleet. As stated elsewhere the brits could just save their money on round 1 and build a huge fleet on round 2 then have the americans move in their newly build atlantic fleet. Unless Germany has 8 or 9 fighters on round 2 I would think the new allied atlantic fleet is safe.

    • RE: Lift the Cuban economic sanctions

From what I know, you can’t enter the US illegally as a Cuban, aren’t all automatically granted refugee status?

Legal or illegal has nothing to do with why they come. They don’t come BECAUSE it is illegal, they want a better life. But not all who want a better life come from communist or totalitarian states as was implied.

US agriculture relies on illegal migrant workers. They factor this into their plans. The problem is most people in Canada and the US are too lazy to work picking fruit and veggies. Trust me, I live in an agricultural area of Ontario. We get people to pick fruit from the dominican republic while lazy canadians collect wellfare because they wouldn’t work that hard for minimum wage. That of course is 8 bucks and hour with health benefits universal to all Canadians. You won’t get rich for sure but……

I agree that new citizens ought to stand in line, but, don’t prevent people from coming in, then budget on illegal migrant workers then feign shock that there are so many mexicans working on farms.

    • RE: Iraq executest POW's, violates Geneva Convention, no Protest

I was being facetious with all my 8 points actually.
If people believe no country as the right to pre-emptive action then they believe countries must wait to be attacked (then prove who attacked them I guess) before taking any action. So I suppose as long as say Saddam just killed 5 million shites Iraqis and 5 million kurdish Iraqis that would be regretable but certainly nothing one ought to intervene militarily to prevent this. Certainly prevention of genocide isn’t even pre-emptive defensive action.

France intervened unilaterally in the Ivory coast recently. Well, it was to ‘defend’ French nationals but they went much further. Although of a dubious legality it was the right thing to do as it did prevent lots of bloodshed. It’s a pity they can’t see the logic in Iraq. I am 100% convinced that over the next 10 years less Iraqis well die now then if Saddam had been left in power.

    • RE: Lift the Cuban economic sanctions

Lots of people come to the US from lots of good countries. Canada for instance (yeah I’m biased, so what!) sends lots of people to the US. Some might say it’s because we are communist but that’s a bit of a stretch. A fair number of Americans come to Canada. By some people’s logic that implies the US is communist or has bad human rights. Hmmm, the US voted along with Iran, Iraq, Libya and Syria against a human rights world court, interesting company but I digress.

    • RE: How many rounds does the average game last?

Two or three times a month! I wish…. Mind you when I was in high school I’d get in 4-5 games a week. Now everybody has wives and kids but me!

I’d agree that by turn 10 it is often clear who ‘should’ win. That when a lucky tech roll by Japan adds 5-10 more rounds!

    • RE: Russia cant attack first round

Even with russia restricted the axis gets crushed 95% of the time with no additional bid in my experience anyways.

With out RR Germany does lose perhaps 2 tanks, however, I think the loss of the Baltic fleet and a fighter impacts Germany far more than missing 2 tanks and a few infantry. The first round Germany MUST crush as much of the allied Atlantic/Med fleet as possible. Losing a sub, transport and fighter means Germany loses at least 1 and often 2 more air units when knocking out the allied fleet. Germany may go a bit more conservative due to the initial losses which often turns out to be fatal.

      Thoughts? Flames? :-)

The Japs had the betty transport, Yamamoto was shot down in one I believe. Historic or not, paratroopers really toss the game for a loop. Could the Germans invade africa by parachute without transports for equipment?

The germans did take an island by paratroopers in the med. sea, but I forget which island.

    • RE: 3 Tricky Questions

Once the sea zone has been cleared of hostile forces then you unload and do the amphibious assult. I’m not sure what the ruling is on calling off the assult however. If you wanted 2 fighters to attack the land and wanted to land 4 infantry in but lost 2 infantry in the naval battle could you call off the attack? I think you can choose NOT to land, the wording is tricky in the instructions. They say you ‘can’ rather than you ‘must’. I would think the air would still have to do 1 round and could then retreat as it is NOT an amphibious assult anymore. This is open to interpretation I am sure.

If there is a single enemy transport and you have 50 battleships and 50 cruisers, all 100 units must engage the transport, none could do a single shot in support of the landing. Hope that clears it up. Check out the link at the bottom if you haven’t already.

    • RE: Lift the Cuban economic sanctions

      The US view:

Cuba is a communist totalitarian state that violates human rights. We must punish them with ecomonic sacntions to force them to change their ways.

China is a communist totalitarian state that violates human rights. We must trade with them so they can see that we promote change.

My mom and her boyfriend have spent 2 weeks in Cuba every winter for 4 years now, they love it. Cubans are far more literate and healthy then they were as an economic/colonial puppet of mainly US but many other interests as well.

Castro obviously has many faults, the regime does need to be changed but sanctions don’t make sense. Actually, all they do is keep Castro in power. It seems counter-productive and part of it is do to lots of Cubans voting for silly things. Trying to keep that kid from his dad when his mom kidnapped him and died on a raft coming to the US was stupid.

The US does some really good things then for some reason they do little petty things that raise the ire of others.

Well yes it is, but Alaska has 2 sea zones. The one that is 2 spaces (1 turn) from Japan by boat is NOT the sea zone the is also next to W Can. No worries of that.

    • RE: 3 Tricky Questions

Question 1 - Let’s say Japan captures Hawaii. Would Japan have unlimited build there or a placement of 1 piece a turn?

Answer) No, Japan would have limited production, the same is true for China, you’d get 1 unit/round.

Question 2 - Do you have to use your physical on the board aircraft for a kamikaze, or are they “invisible” aircraft?

Answer) The kamikaze is an invisible entity. It’s not even like a unit because you can’t take it off as a hit. Basically, you have 6 missles each with a 1/3 chance of hitting a target in the marked zones. I was rather confused, it seemed such a waste if it required an existing fighter.

Question 3 - During a amphibous assualt…. There is a enemy destroyer on a coast line. Now can you A) move your transport in by itself and land troops or B) can you move it in with boat escorts and land troops or C) do you have to wait till the coast line is cleared to land troops?

Answer) I’m assuming since it’s an amphibous assualt the coast line is hostile. So, A) Yes, this is legal but the transport would fighter the destroyer, since it has 0 offense it sinks automatically taking the troops with it. B) Yes, you must win the sea zone battle first. C) You must declare all battles first before resolving any. If you don’t put your transports into the sea zone during the combat phase then you can only move them during the non-combat phase. You can’t attack at this time so you must go the route of B)
