This is actually a question that gets asked fairly often about each incarnation of A&A.  I guess it just confuses some people that they can move forces into a contested area after the battle is over.

GER 11:  This Alpen Festung is pretty confusing.  I think I could pull it off, but not sure everyone would follow how I interpret it.

So “during combat” is vague.  When do I announce this retreat?  Before combat, during combat, during retreat?

When do the allies get to attack these newly converted berzerker infantry?  During the same combat move?

Can I continue to put more Germans in the Alpen Festung in future turns?

If the Allies leave or are kicked out of Germany does it revert back to normal?

Can I do it again if they show up again?

I like the concept, but it sounds troublesome.

–-------------- I love how you call them berzerker infantry. LOL!!!

The German player is allowed to create a “national redoubt” if
the territory of Germany has been attacked by allied forces. During combat German units can retreat to
this virtual territory. All retreating units are converted to Infantry to resemble a true guerrilla campaign
fought in the mountains of the Alps. Furthermore the Allies do not gain the income of Germany even if it’s
subsequently captured by them. To take the income Allies must capture the virtual territory and must score
two hits in combat to destroy one land unit. Hits are allocated on damaged ‘guerrilla’ units first before a
      non- damaged unit is selected.

The allies attack Germany the Germans can still retreat even if surrounded to the fortress. All these new units now take 2 hits to kill until they are all dead jim. Allies don’t get Germany money either… thats still under German control–(Germany controls the factory)… so yes you can place new units in the fortress but your only getting Germany territory income. Its basically like pulling the iraq insurgency to prolong the game.

JA 15:  Is this a persistent NA or only used once?

e.g., Capture India on Turn 3 - double Income for India Turn 4
Capture Persia on Turn 4 - double Income for Peria Turn 5
            Capture Trans-Jordan on Turn 5 - double Income for Trans-Jordan Turn 6

–-------------only once per game. the first time Japan takes these places.

UK 15:  Is this only in Africa, or all UK fighters now get this?

Some of these sounds like silly questions but our group gets bogged down by the letter of the law a lot.  So, I’m always trying to understand the spirit of the law so we can make better decisions when we run into ambiguity.

–---------------------no its for any British fighters anywhere…not just in Africa.

USSR 14:  This one is BRUTAL!  I saw USSR pull this on turn 1, and Germany was hammered.  Love it!

However, the question is how many times can they do it per country?  The first time Germany invades each USSR held territory, or every USSR held country for the rest of the game?

–--------- this is the first time they invade the Soviet territory, not every turn which denies Germany of any money. So its each originally held Soviet territory once per game.

I was limiting each USSR country to 1 time “Slash and Burn”.  Is it really suppose to be every time a country sea-saws back and forth that it is of no use to Germany?

-------- no not the back and forth… just the first time.

What if Moscow has fallen and Stalin is “dead”.  Does the order still stand?

-----------LOL yes the rule is not relative to Stalin in the game because Stalin is not a playing piece in AARHE ( at this point)

      Italian 14:  I don’t get this one.

Bridging friendly units has the same effect, so this NA is of no value.  Or does this reset the units and regardless of whether the unit fought in the Combat Phase it can bridge across?

It DOES read one level of technology transferred between one SIDE per turn.

so if axis as a group obtain 4 tech slots, only one level can pass from one nation to another that turn.

Soviets don’t share or receive secrets.

separate the land and air combat aspects until the flow chart has only one side with planes, then you combine all land and air units in it.

      I knew this would happen!!!

The last three games have swung back over to the Allies, and we didn’t muck with the increased payments (e.g., left it at 12 IPC for lend lease).

Yes good that you stuck it out a few more games.

I’d attribute it to America buying Russia a FTR each turn to keep Germany at bay and enabling Russia to fight back the Japanese.  However, the Japanese are still very strong – and under good leadership are pushing in huge amounts of infantry with air cover.

      What version you playing?

America never seems to be able to keep a fleet in the water.  So, we’ve just given up and let the Japanese own the Pacific trying a KGF strategy.

Americans must allocate a starter fleet to get her pacific game going, then go after Germany but with small tidbits of replacements until Germany is contained. The game was designed so that you cannot “ignore” either theater, to make American player more dynamic.

German U-Boats are extremely ugly until UK gets Anti-Submarine warfare.  Then the subs are worthless and the invasion usually starts.

Yes thats supposed to happen, but the Germans have some tricks to keep it going a bit longer, with upgraded subs and jets, but they must pursue different strategies at different times in the war and be able to change gears and ‘notice’ when the change appears so as to maximize her resolve in other areas of the game.

German jets usually end up kicking the Allies back on their heels until they can regroup or overrun him usually with terrible losses from the Jet power defending on a 5 and giving ARM+1.

Yes yes thats it! you see the power of Hitlers Panzers!

I’d say it’s easily 50-50 now with all the losses we had in the beginning to the Axis.

      Still really enjoying it.

Good show. provide feedback and HQ will make adjustments and clarifications as they arise.

Now back to the eastern front!

if you want to be able to move through enemy submarines in non-combat move, I am ok with it

yes they can pass thru. no special dispensations.

if you want to be able to retreat into a sea zone occupied by enemy submarines, I am not sure about that (as mentioned)
if so I rather we let defender retreat into ANY adjacent sea zone

They can retreat to ANY sea zone not occupied by enemy surface warships ( so they can enter SZ with subs or transports)

From now on subs and transports don’t do anything unless its their active turn.

Of course you can send ASW units and try and kill them by hunting them down.

also, have some new ideas for subs which are extremely simple, listed under AA50 house rules.

I want to make a new AARHE version for AA50 once we fix these semantic issues and clarifications.

I have a map that’s the best map you have seen. Id say its at least as good as the new map and done in the same style. Its 98% done. adding artistic items. I will release this and alot of files in a few weeks time.

well it was probably hard (confusing) to play a hybrid

if there are anything full AARHE you and your friend felt is too complex
we can work on simplifying the rule while modelling the same idea
(naval combat has been simplified…looking back older version of AARHE is a bit unplayable lol)

or tell us if you find an idea just not worth
ARRHE had rules in the past that didn’t make a difference to gameplay and we removed it (like capturing enemy soldiers)

We’re curious if you get to roll for Diplomacy if you lose your capital.  There doesn’t seem to be anything in the rules prohibiting it like there is for Tech Dev.

We’re leaning towards not allowing it.

BTW:  Germany had some HOT dice and repelled the UK invasion.  Lesson learned!  Must be Begas rubbing off.

No you lose your capital you lose ability for tech and diplomacy, when you lose your last factory you cant build anything but infantry.
