    • RE: HBG - Axis & Allies Parts/Accessories and Custom Piece Sets Store!

Is it just me or did the French set just slip under the radar without anyone noticing?  Of all the sets HBG had on the go, the French one was the best one; from an economic perspective especially.  I don’t understand why they produce obscure/fringe-type units that very few people will be interested in, such as Sea Planes when they can produce a set that can replace several thousand pieces.  The interest is there for it, I’ve asked around.  I don’t get it…

It looks like the German pieces are all the rage right now.  I’d be buying in too if I could afford it.  Every year HBG is becoming more and more into their own, which is just awesome.  I won’t be surprised if they begin to encompass the majority of the A&A oriented market in the future.

I have a question for the community; would it be worth a person’s time to conduct a polling thread to gauge the interest in the French set?  It can be compared against other sets/pieces/projects that are on the go.  It can serve a purpose of giving HBG some market analysis on our part.  Other poll threads can be made to help HBG get an idea as to what the community wants on other things.  I look at it as this: HBG gets valuable info and can generate profit/growth to a certain extent, and we as the community can get what we want more quckly (theoretically).  Win-win, no?

I chose 1939.  Tech trees sound interesting.

    • RE: My WW1 Axis and Allies

This is probably one of the most gorgeous maps I’ve seen yet.  I can only imagine the amount of hours you had to put into it.  It looks like it has much potential to be monetized as well, as long as there’s no copyright infringement.  I wonder if WotC would buy it or distrubute it once it’s finished…  Regardless, I’d love to play this!

As for the pieces, I’m guessing you avoided acquiring A&A 1914 because of the lack of variety and quality.  I would too if I was working with a game like this.  HBG has a very limited selection for WW1; it’s mostly WW2 stuff there.  It looks like you’ve checked out their site already.   The only options I can think of are the ones you already mentioned.

      Awesome work man.

    • RE: Questions about varient

The rules for '36 were tested for about 2 years before release.  The devs did put quite some time into the refining process it seems.  Like any product (like a computer program) that comes out however, it becomes subject to a much wider range of scrutiny and set of variables.  I think the refining process for '36 is well on the right side of the bell curve, but since I haven’t played it I can’t tell you exactly where on the bell curve it sits.  I think it’s very safe to say that the core of the game is rock solid.  The new elements that were introduced in '36 appear to be refined enough that there won’t be any fundamental changes, except when there are expansions added (which are entirely optional).  On the other hand, there’s nothing house rules can’t fix haha.

    • RE: Questions about varient

Finally found some interest in the series YG? :p  If so, that’s great :)

The first one from HBG came out in 2011 as Global War 1939.  A reprint came out in 2012 that changed the map a fair bit.  This is the version currently being sold instead of the one from 2011.  Current revision of the rules is at 7.2, which you can get in a .pdf file for free.  Global War 1936, a.k.a. Global War 2nd Edition, came out in early November 2015.  Rules are still being refined I think, they’re at version 1 (in a free .pdf file).

Global War 1936 is supposed to be the biggest and baddest of them all because of how much it encompasses, and how much it potentially encompasses.  If you can look passed the cost, it brings everything to the currently highest possible level of detail.  Units, rules, expansions, compatibility, level of thought and skill, etc…  As far as the best one goes, that’s entirely a matter of preference.  Some people will say that 1942.2 is the best version of any A&A ever.  I don’t own GW36 because of the overall cost, but in my personal opinion I think it’s the best one, although I’m an enthusiast.

    • RE: Jinx's Cabinet Ministers and their Effects.

Here’s a quick thought: 0.5 I.P.C.s might work in the same way 12 sided die made the game better over 6 sided die.  The more complex the game becomes, the more intricate the mechanics of it need to be.  I’ve been wanting to use 1/2 I.P.C.s for a while, but I haven’t tested that because all I get to do is play G40 now.  The less practical alternative would be to double the I.P.C.s for everything so that 1 I.P.C.s becomes 0.5 I.P.C.s (much like inflation with Fiat Currencies, such as our dollar).  I’ll post here again once I give this whole thing more thought.

    • RE: Jinx's Cabinet Ministers and their Effects.

I meant to reply sooner.  I have a few different questions on this.  I don’t expect any or all of them to be answered.

How many political figureheads are you planning on implementing exactly?  It looks like each nation needs about 9, and I assume each position has about 5 to 14 options on how they influence the situation (I think, if I’m reading it right).  There’s probably a few different choices as to who you can pick for a given position too, given how many you said you got from your research.  The entire political spectrum has to be represented, which creates some very interesting scenarios, as it did in real history.  Are you planning on making certain politicians have a few different attributes to reduce the number of people needed to be represented?  In GW36 (and GW39?), I’m also assuming you’re going to limit the number of nations who use these rules.  I’m guessing the nations that make 10 I.P.C.s or more as their starting income will make the cut.

The powers who will be represented (correct me if I’m wrong):

      • Axis:
          - Germany
          - Italy
          - Japan

      • Allies:
          - The Commonwealth:
            - The United Kingdom
            - The Far East Command (maybe, idk)
            - Canada
            - The A.N.Z.A.C.
          - The United States
          - France
          - Nationalist China

      • Comintern:
          - The U.S.S.R.

I know Canada isn’t in GW36, which I find VERY DISAPPOINTING; I’ll be using house rules for that.

The powers who will not be represented (again, correct me):

      • Axis:
          - Finland
          - Hungary
          - Romania
          - Bulgaria
          - Vichy France
          - Nationalist Spain
          - Argentina
          - Siam
          - Manchukuo
          - Pro-Axis Nations

      • Allies:
          - South Africa
          - Free France
          - Brazil
          - The Netherlands
          - Poland
          - Pro-Allied Nations

      • Comintern:
          - Communist China
          - Republican Spain

What’s your progress on this so far?  I know you said it already in the O.P., but I’m just curious.  Could you use assistance?

I’m also thinking about whether this can be added onto Bud Tarentine’s development or not.  The game would be more in-depth than most computer games haha.

If you have an Android phone you can get Excel in the Google Play Store for free.  It obviously works if you have a Windows phone as well.  I don’t think it works for iPhones though, but I’m not sure.  It has all the functionalities needed to view the Player List.

I’m assuming that you’ve read Bud Tarentine’s thread already; lots of good stuff there.  This looks interesting as well, but I’ll admit that what you’ve proposed is over my head.  I’d like to see this in action, or play it, to understand everything.

Taking the time to play something like this is no different than watching a TV series, reading a book or playing an RPG (there’s several I could name).  The only issue is logistics and location, which can be easily solved, relatively speaking.

I’ll comment on the mechanics if/when I get a better grasp on this.  Hope to hear more about it.

    • RE: Axis & Allies G39/G36 Players in Alberta, Canada. (Edmonton or Grande Prairie)

Oh, wow!  I didn’t recognize that it was you!  lol

I know exactly what event you mentioned.  It was at Card’s Board Game Café back in early December, and I would have shown up but I needed to work.  I showed the owner my 1939 board and gave him my contact info, and he told me that he would contact me before the next event to have my board setup.  I guess we’ll see what happens.  I’ve met a few people there as well.  Imagine if it was at a place like the Shaw Center on Jasper ave though; that would be incredible.

I’d like to get 1936 as well, but a few things are stopping me atm.  The most significant reason is because the loonie is just way too low right now (USD$0.6890).  A little ridiculous, eh?  The other big reason is the polish of the game.  What are the odds of a Revised Edition of the Global War “Second Edition” 1936 map coming out?  It happened with the first GW1939 map that came out in 2011.  The revised one came out the next year, for good reason, but believe me, I’m ready to pull the trigger and push that “buy” button haha.

I still have your email address, and I do have a friend or two to bring with me as well (maybe).  I’ll try you in two weeks and see what happens. :)

This thread should be pinned/stickied as well.  The other thing that could happen is that the two lists get amalgamated.

    • RE: Axis & Allies G39/G36 Players in Alberta, Canada. (Edmonton or Grande Prairie)

I’m not sure if you’ve managed to get anything going through here, but I’m up in the Grande Prairie area.  It’s so hard to organize anything up here because of the population and distance.  My regular group isn’t all that active either…

I think I can say that I have a very good idea how to play.  It would be nice to get more experience with new people.  I own Global 1939 and G40 and have quite a collection myself going.  I haven’t played Global 1939 in just over 2 years now though; it’s like I’m eyeing up this bottle of water while I’m very thirsty but I can’t drink it :(.

I think we need an A&A convention in Western Canada to get people together.  I wonder if Alberta would be a good central point for that?  The only other one in Canada is in Oshawa, Ontario, which very impractical for most of us Westerners.  I think that’s the FMG one.  The ones in the U.S. aren’t even worth mentioning haha.

    • RE: HBG - Axis & Allies Parts/Accessories and Custom Piece Sets Store!

I’m really wondering about something here…  Doesn’t anyone want the see French set the most out of all the other things available at HBG?  The French set has a way broader range of application than any other set, because it will replace blue Russians and isn’t tied to any particular subset of game or rules, just A&A type games overall.

If I were HBG, I would be prioritizing this set above anything else at this point, since Global 1936 and Amerika have shipped.  I would have bought 2 of these sets a long time ago if I could have; and told all of the other ppl I know personally who own even G40 about it.  Word of mouth is the best kind of marketing, especially when good quality is part of the equation like at HBG.  This set has so much money earning potential it isn’t funny.

      Does anyone else agree?

I wonder why Canada hasn’t been made as it’s own nation, instead of how it is now (it seems); just being British like in A&A Global 1940.  Is it possible to incorporate it easily?

ghr2, here’s what I would gather from what I know by doing some reading in the rules in .pdf format (version 7.2):

      1. Page 28, section 10, B: The Dutch are pro-allied at the very start.  You can move into the territory at any time.  That means you can do this.

      2. Page 29, section 11: No, they move 2 to do this.  How could the unit be at 2 places at once?

      3. Page 24, section 1, B: No.

      4. Reference Map: Belgium is absorbed into the Netherlands in this version.  Same rules apply for that territory as the rest of the Dutch territories.

      5. Page 9, Section 5 - Strategic Bombing Runs: Yes.

      6. Page 33, Section 4, A: Yes.

Side note: Over 80% of the questions I see posted in this part of the forum are answerable by just reading all of the rules.
