Or you could just research long range fighters and bombers first turn, and if you get it, then go for it on turn 1. And you will have this ability throughout the game. This will allow you to get all your aircraft in range of the attack.

Slowing Japan
First I wanted to thank everyone for their contributions on my last post regarding the Brazil IC.
I will be playing the US next game, and plan on aggressively sending troops to africa. I am looking to have roughly 8 transports by turn 4 doing this. I feel this will give me flexibility to invade Europe if need by, and to keep the flow of troops into africa.
My question is how do I slow Japan?
I would like to completely evac the pacific to include my battleship and bring everything to bear on africa and eventually europe. Is it better to use your EUS bomber, fighters in the PAC and your ships off of WUS to destroy the remaining fleet off of pearl harbor?
Also, should my UK partner completely evac India, or should he put up somewhat of a defensive with all 5 available infantry and your fighter?
Once africa is held, I was thinking of building a potential UK IC in egypt to aid in reclaiming India or supporting the caucus region?
Let me know what you guys think.

RE: IC for US and UK
A major thing I like about the IC in Brazil is that landing in Algeria the traditional way leaves you pretty open to a counter attack with the German Battleship, and all of the german fighters that could be surrounding the med. To me, this is much safer. Unfortunately my game isn’t for a while, so I won’t be able to tell you how it works for a few weeks. Keep the advice coming. I am not an experienced US player, and I really want to get in the fight fast with them.

RE: IC for US and UK
Do your normal turn 1 landings in Algeria with UK and US forces. Start moving your panama destroyer over towards brazil, fly fighter from EUS to land in brazil.
Turn 1 purchase 1 IC in brazil
2 Transport in EUS
1 Tank
2 InfThis way you will have taken algeria, on turn 1
You can send more reenforcements there turn 2 including air, and will have about 3 transports down there to send your turn 2 brazilian purchases over. -
IC for US and UK
I will be playing as the US next game and am thinking about putting an IC in brazil rd 1. I will go africa heavy, and once africa is completely under control…I want to have the UK player put an IC in Egypt. This way we can flood africa with troops for a potential S.Europe landing, or send them towards india and the caucus mtns.
Any comments?

If you buy the map off of the website, does it come laminated?

UK Factory In India
I brought this up before, but here goes…
I believe that a great way to SJF while going for a KGF strategy would be to have the UK player build an IC in India on turn 1. I know that Russia can ill afford to send a tank and a fighter to India, but I think it would be worth it in order to secure their back door, and slow Japan. If you send absolutely every UK unit you can to reenforce this, and with the help of the USSR units, you should be able to hold it. Has anyone tried this, if so what is your success rate? I know Cmdr Jennifer thinks a S.African IC is better, but I tried that and it seemed to help, but not enough.

RE: German Factory in Ukraine Turn 1
I was victorious. The UK’s navy was destroyed very early in the game, and my Japanese counterpart did very well. Moscow was taken!!!

RE: German Factory in Ukraine Turn 1
Thanks for the advice bunnies. I agree with you about focusing on what you CAN do. My plan was to leave the fighters just as you described. The wasp nest analogy was for any turn 2 counter attack against an allied landing in algeria. Great advice though. Thanks.

RE: German Factory in Ukraine Turn 1
Crazy Ivan,
Thanks for the advice. My current plan is to go Africa heavy in order to get the IPCs and to either discourage the allies from attempting an African Campaign, or in your words, force them to go all out to get it back. My concern with this was taking my luftwaffe out of the eastern front, and therefore being exposed to a potential joint strike at my largest eastern army from Russia and the Caucus.
A compromise for this was to go heavy in Africa, and leave all my aircraft within striking distance for any landing in Algeria. My next part of the plan was to consolidate my eastern front into a large army located in the Balkans. While this forsakes the Ukraine for a turn, it also keeps your forces from being attacked from Russia and the Caucus jointly. If I have a small army at Karelia, then the Russian army will have to divert some attention north.
Turn 2 would either be me smoking any forces landed in Africa, or flying my planes to the E. Front to lay waste to Ukraine. My big problem is that any pressure left off of Russia really makes taking Moscow that much harder. If Russia is gaining IPCs then I believe Germany is in Trouble.

RE: German Factory in Ukraine Turn 1
My current strategy thanks to your input (everyone) is to build about 10 INF and 2 ARM first turn.
My attacks will Be Karelia from Norway and an amphibious assault from W. Europe.
Take out the Med BB with fighters and SZ 8 Sub
Take out the Med DD and storm Egypt.
This leaves me with kind of a wasp’s nest of fighters and bomber in the med that could destroy any UK or US landing in Algeria.
My fear remains that the USSR can mount a serious counter offensive on the Eastern Front.
On turn 1 is it wise to move your baltic fleet north to block the route to archangel?
-
RE: German Factory in Ukraine Turn 1
In order to take out the med fleet and attack Egypt you need to send just about all of your air, correct?
Doing so, makes me feel that the eastern front is very weak. I like having all of the landed fighters and bomber in N. Africa and W. Europe because it forms a wasps nest for any potential torch landing attempt. I guess i’m going to have to take a gamble, go air heavy in the med and leave myself weak in the east for a turn. Is it more imporant to secure the med fully and be weak on the eastern front? What about just taking out the DD near the Suez and leaving the BB?
I do not plan on buying the CV for the balitc fleet, but I do want to use them to delay any africa or archangel reenforcement. Any suggestions? If I try the consolidation with my sub from the atlantic I am open for air attack. I don’t think the UK would be dumb enough to bring any ships with me having 3 subs and a first shot.

RE: German Factory in Ukraine Turn 1
Ukraine can be taken by the USSR first turn, but what about the idea of a forward IC in general? I am having a hard time seeing how I am going to win as Germany. My current plan is to build about 10 infantry and two tanks first turn. I want to take out the british med fleet with my fighters and bomber, but then I feel as though I am too weak on the Eastern front. Dealing with Africa, watching your back door in W. Europe and slugging it out East seems very difficult to pull of successfully. I have read the basic germany strategy on the homepage, but I feel that leaves you very weak for a Russian offensive.

German Factory in Ukraine Turn 1
Has anyone ever built a factory in the Ukraine on Germany Turn 1? The problem with the Eastern front has always been logistics. Why not a factory right next to the caucus? Please let me know what you think. I know this takes a lot of much needed troops away, but is it worth it?

Basic Germany Advice
I think I will be playing as Germany this weekend and wanted some of your advice. My plan is to purchase all infantry first turn or two and start marching them east hoping that when I am ready to strike hard at Moscow my later purchases of armor will have caught up. A few things I am concerned with…
How much to I devote to Africa?
Do I wait for Japan to deliver a 1-2 punch?
Should I make a serious push for the caucus to get the factory?Just looking for basic advice. I never play as the germans.

RE: The Art of Defense
The original post was exactly like one of my first. You oversold the value of your advice. Unlike Bunnies I think it is ok to start a discussion just to get the dialogue going. This game is absolutely set up for attack. If you are the axis you must attack. As the Allies you must counter attack. Russia is one of the few places where you can just plan an elaborate defense, but still you need to counter attack from time to time. A key historical point regarding this game is that these countries did not start out with much of the natural resources they needed to wage war. This was why Japan started in Manchuria and the Nazis made such a push for the caucus oil fields. Similar to history Axis and Allies forces countries to expand in order go gather these resources in the form of IPCs. The only country that is somewhat self-sufficient is the US. All defense in this game should be geared towards devastating counter attacks or to intimidate your opponent to not attack somewhere.

RE: Eastern Front
Be careful about launching any offensives from Norway. It is important to leave somewhat of a defensive force in Norway to protect your back door. It is very easy for the UK and US to land troops there.

What is a Bid?
I see the term Bid being used all the time on this forum. Can someone explain what this means?
Thanks

RE: US / UK Strategy
I just had the board out and played through a couple sample turns. It seems possiblethat the US can take Africa and still put some pressure on Japan. I think that if the UK supports Russia and harasses Germany in Europe that the US should be able to take and hold africa (with some moderate UK help) and still slug it out with Japan. That should keep Japan from pressuring Russia and allow the USSR and UK to handle Germany. Is this reasonable?

RE: US / UK Strategy
I tend to play the axis much better than the allies, and therefore I really am struggling with the UK and US. I posted an earlier poll about where the UK should build an IC. Many said that you should not build an IC first turn. If you do not build one, how do you get UK in the fight. Can someone lay out a first turn for the UK where you don’t build an IC.
Also….If the UK focuses on India and slowing Japan, could the US take Africa on its own? Is building an IC in Brazil a bad move if America has the sole task of expelling the Germans out of Africa?
